(Similar to iainf72's post) I just saw on Sky Sports News on TV that Johnny Bellis is out of the coma.
    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,15264_5626002,00.html

"Jonny Bellis was brought out of his medically-induced coma late last week but remains heavily medicated," said a spokesman for British Cycling.

"Whilst his condition is still serious, the hospital staff are slowly bringing him off the ventilator and are keeping a close eye on his progress."

A step in the right direction, here's hoping he gets back to normal ASAP.

Buried deep in this story on Cav's wardrobe, is mention of Jonny Bellis. It sounds like he's improving well:

Same article now on here, good news that he's progressing so well.
Since falling ill and ending his season in Missouri, Cavendish’s main preoccupation has been supporting his friend and fellow Manxman Jonny Bellis. The Saxo Bank rider sustained serious injuries in a scooter accident at the end of September and remains in hospital in Florence. Cavendish visits him on an almost daily basis.

“He’s out of the coma now and the doctors say that he’s come as far in six weeks as most patients do in twelve,” Cavendish said. “He’s got tubes in his mouth, so he can’t talk for the moment, but he’s writing messages on a notepad and communicating really well. He’s lost a lot of muscle – his legs look like Michael Rasmussen’s – but he’s doing great.”

    Update:

Meanwhile, Jonny Bellis is close to a return to the United Kingdom after a road accident last month.

The 21-year-old Manxman had just completed his first full season as a professional with Saxo Bank before being placed in a medically-induced coma following a crash on his motor scooter.

Jonny is doing really well since the last update and is communicating by writing messages on a white board, said a statement on British Cycling's website.

"They are looking into flying him to London shortly."

    The new Alberto Contador?

Hopefully he'll come back and win something big. What a fantastic story that would be.

    A further update via BC's website;

A spokesman for Jonny Bellis's hospital in London has released the following:

"Jonny is doing very well. He no longer needs ICU [intensive care]. His rehabilitation is ongoing and he's now able to talk again."

The latest news is so encouraging. I am sure that Jonny's family are relieved.

I, and I am sure others on this forum, send our best wishes to Jonny for a full and complete recovery.

    An update on Jonny Bellis...

    http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/lat ... ellis.html
A trust fund has been set up by members of the Manx Road Club to assist Jonny Bellis who is set to remain in hospital in London until April following serious head injuries sustained in a Scooter crash last September.

The 21 year old from Douglas continues to recover well but requires extensive physiotherapy at the Wellington Hospital, St John's Wood, a specialist centre for the treatment of head injuries, costing £10,000 per month.

I'd have imagined the medical costs would be met by British Cycling/Saxo Bank.

Maybe - but as it was not "work related", there's no guarantee of this. Unless either have suitable insurance......

You probably wouldn't be if you saw all the specialised equipment and the number of highly trained people needed to rehabilitate anyone with that kind of injury.

Most people are blissfully ignorant even of the cost of 'everyday' equipment used in the NHS, hospice wards and GP surgeries. It certainly isn't "cheap tack", even though quite a lot is disposable/single-use.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.

    Fully agree
My wife had a head injury from hitting a pothole (& yes,she WAS wearing a helmet)
She was on a high dependancy bed (next step down from IC,which seems basically to be one to one nursing).
The amount of technical monitoring machinery was not inconsiderable,so for the sort of care Johnny is recieving,in London,10K per month sounds fair.
Probably costs as much to keep some chav locked up!!
    so many cols,so little time!

Genuine question - does the NHS not provide sufficient rehab for this kind of case ?

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
  • Perhaps the rehab is not included in the UK NHS reciprocal agreement with Isle of Man.
  • wonder if cav will cough up some cash its not like he isnt short of a few bob and they are pretty good mates i think

That's great news. I don't know about you guys but I'm going to have a bad taste in my mouth the next time I see the media claim him as British.

Not British enough to pay for his healthcare it seems.
Scottish and British...and a bit French
  • Dulldave: UK mainland and Isle of Man have seperate healthcare systems. Big row going on at the moment. There used to be a reciprocal healthcare agreement but this has, I believe, now ended.
