From what people have been telling me recently, 7+hr rides will train your slow-twitch muscle fibres and quick sprints like this will train your fast-twitch fibres. A road race would still require you to have a good mix of both.

So, NapoleonD, I know you're only a couple of weeks into doing this but do you actually feel like you're going any better? I can see you can do more intervals but can you say you feel any better than if you'd have spent the time doing something else?
I've had a go myself but I clearly don't have your commitment, or the power!

I'm not sure because I don't have much to compare it to. The big test will come when I do another FTP test in two weeks.

    But I feel better...

I managed an hour an a half outside this morning did some 10 min intervals just above LT.

I passed a couple of workmen and they shouted "F****ing hell, it's Bradley Wiggins!"

I was quite surprised as I usually get Lance Armstrong.

    Ha! That's a new one...

I've had people shout "hurry up" when i've gone past at 25-30mph.

I was coming down Holme Moss at around 40 once and went past some guy walking up it who totally underestimated my speed. As I went past, I heard "ooooohhhh shhhhiiiiii...."

But my favourite came from a driver who was obviously a cyclist - when I stopped at some traffic lights, he wound down the window and said "excuse me, any chance I can draft you mate? There's a headwind..."

Only way to tell will be with the FTP test in two weeks.

However doing the 10 min intervals at just above the FTP I set two weeks ago was, I hate to say this, quite easy compared to how they had been recently...

    Looking good then so far!

Thanks for the info - I was looking on a smart phone so I couldn't see the right hand side of the image :)

Can't wait to see how much it's helped when you get your results at the next trial.

No point saying it without proof, I could ride out unofficially and do one but I've got garmin files to proove, and I've got results on a website to proove it, without any of those there is no point saying about TT times I guess.

I didn't go all that way to watch - I was just 2 minutes too late turning up. :? It was literally 2 minutes too. If it weren't for that headwind on the way there....

2mins too late to enter? I don't think that's true no way, that'd be insanly bad time keeping and they'd probs make an exception to 2mins late.

Nope. The timekeeper was walking away from the pub just as I arrived, towards the start line (John, I think he was called?) and he said they were very strict.

I'm sure everybody is shocked to the core by that  At least with the custom frame you are having built bhima, you will be able to hit the ground running next season in your unofficial TT rides

    Oooh,

    Just done another full sess,

Power for the interval section is up by 15 watts average over the last one I posted (the first one in which I managed 8 intervals), max up by 25!

Right. Off to be sick then off to work.

    I'll post the graph tomorrow.

    1st time I managed 8-

Average power during interval phase - 276
    Max Power - 853
    Peak 20 second power - 485

    260809.jpg

    Yesterday -

Average power during interval phase - 291
    Max power - 877
    Peak 20 second power - 600

    290809.jpg

Quite an improvement on the peak 20s!

    congrats NapD,

I'm still not up to 8 reps yet - My Dad laughed until I got him on the turbo and he managed half the power for 2 reps and then gave up though - it's a lot tougher than people think so I am genuinely impressed.

As for people asking if it makes a difference - yes it does. I went out with a friend yesterday on quite a hilly course and matched him on the flat sprinted up each of the hills and had to coast the other side to let him catch up, I was actually looking forward to the hills and I'm about 95kgs!

Bhima, that voice recognition software you're trialling (the one without a name) has gone wrong. Fixed it for you, mate.

NapD - Powertap is now in the post!

Got no turbo trainer though. :? I might risk it and try this workout up the cat & fiddle or something, on a part that's safe. Or maybe at 5am, when the roads are empty.

Just noticed you hit 250 RPM at one point.

Aggieboy - it's still wrong. I hid behind the pub, not in it. Some of the riders went in it, so I could have been seen. :!:

Felt like crap today as came off nights, but thought what the hell, I'm going for a ride.

Set off towards Mow Cop feeling slow, sluggish and lacking energy (I hate the changeover from nights to days), got to Mow Cop and managed it. (39x27)

Thought I'd carry on and managed Lask Edge and Wincle plus all the rolling bits in between.

Actually felt ok by the end, 3hrs 20 mins, longest non-stop ride since the incident...

Peak 10 mins was on Mow cop - 305 watts. Getting there.

By the start of next season I hope my FTP will be over 300.
  • Just following on from my link in newbies section....Im doing Tabata protocol but I do it on foot.

    NapD's method is slightly diff from what Ive read about...I do this;

5 min warm up, 20secs sprint, 10 secs rest (repeat to a total of 8 times), then 5 min warm down. Total 14 minutes. This is what the guy who invented it meant it do be done like...anyhow, youve got to give it your absolute all so your literally throwing up...

Its suggested you dont do it more than once every two weeks cos if you do it properly it knacks you...I dont subscribe to this and am doing it once a week.

It targets VO2 max and improves lactate threshold. It is definitely working for me to the point that sprinting up hills is now crazy fun!! Loving it....

I wouldnt try it on a bike, too dangerous on road, or too tempting not to give it your all.

Exactly the same on the bike.

I refer to them as bucket sessions as one day soon I may find it handy to have a bucket next to me on the trainer.

I think it's ideal on the bike (on the turbo trainer, obviously)...

My wife came into the garage during a session today and said it looked like I was trying to kill myself. I pointed out that that would be less torturous...
