This is true but you get to ride a good group normally, feed stations and it's an incentive to get a good time out of it.

It's a chance to really cane it and see how you get on. I always feel a bit safer pushing hard if I know there are feed stations to refuel at.

Anyway I love sportives, if you get a really fast group of 15-20 it's a fantastic feeling that you just don't get with any other run other than a race.

Yeah, but I'd rather enter sportives in areas I'm not used to. I know those hills well and am very happy pounding round there on my tod and know what to expect and how hard to push. Also some of those climbs involve v narrow roads and I'd rather tackle them in peace + of course solo riding makes for better training...

I'm in on the 6th or 13th Sept. It's gonna be a long one, it's about 15 miles just to get to the start point for me!

(It's about 0.5 miles for me to Kingston Gate, a full three if I join you at Roehampton Gate :D )

Don't worry I'll keep up if the avg speed target is only 17mph or whatever Jash said....! In fact I'll probably need that extra 15 to the start and 10-15 home again just to burn off some energy

    Can't do 6th Sept.

Don't really want to do this weekend.

    Can do 13th Spetember.

But generally speaking, I'm in, if you'll have me and if I'm good enough.

Fair enough, I wouldn't want to pay to ride in my own back yard either.

If there's a ride planned for that weekend I'd forgo the Legs of Steel in favour of a quick group run

I'm certinaly still at the stage that most in lyrca are faster so group is good for training as i'm forced to up the pace.

in terms of groups well i did like the decent from Gospel Pass, as i'm a fast decender having singles and groups to pick off on the way down was fun.

this said on the decent to Llangattock which was a lot faster i was glad there was very few around at that point as i'm not sure i'd of liked to over take at that speed, ie i'd of needed the other side of the road.

If you want a fast descents try Kirkstone Pass In the lakes, I was hitting 50-55mph down there on the FWC, using both sides of the road and skimming the verge on all sides. A real white knuckle arse clenching ride 8)

Then again IP will testify that I'm no stranger to the odd dodgy overtake at speed

I'm looking forward to a fast group ride now :lol::lol:

    Nice pyramid! :D

I could do this on the 13th, I believe... although I might hold you all up.

Yes, yes, fast on flat, but rubbish on hills. Yes, aware that method to rectify that is to climb more hills.

I just want to make this clear - this ride is primarily designed to provide an opp for those that have never tackled the S Hills with an opp to do so - borne out of a short convo I had with someone (forget who, sorry) on the slowcial ride. It won't be done at huge speed as I don't want to put people off. So fast peeps are welcome but please know what to expect.

So fast peeps are welcome but please know what to expect.

Also think you should let slow people to know what to expect. I think your ambient pedalling speed is around 22-25mph (judging from the few times I've ridden with you). You're a lot faster than you realise.

DDD I'm well aware of my preferred speed  This ride will not be a lungbuster, I'm thinking av speed of around 15/16mph and am allowing around 3 hours to complete the 50 mile route. As I said it's not aimed at the fast folk that get out into the hills regularly, it's aimed at those who would like a taster of the hills - well 2 of them anyway. I don't want to put people off, but I would say to everyone considering this if you can't hold a steady 15mph av then it might not be the ride for you - hence the "not so slowcial' ref in the title.

@LiT, @DDD you'd be most welcome to attend.

Have you seen they've developed a timing system so you can ride the Fred Whitton at any time of the year and get a bona fide time  It might be worth looking into, it's a fantastic route and takes in six mountain passes. Easily the best route I've ridden in the UK to date.

IP - I should have said faster ride, not fast, that's what sportives are for

Also, I might be able to do the 13th, def can't do the 6th. Could theoretically do this Sunday but feel I'm probably at the limit of the other half's goodwill in terms of how often I'm out on the bike...

I hope it goes well on 13th (if that is the preferred date) so that you do another one :D
  • I'm up for the 13th but is no one else up for this w/end?

My preference is for a regular "not so slowcial" to build fitness, obviously it has to be regular to make any difference. IP's plan for a 9am start and 12 finish suits me down to the ground.

I guess I'll have to start ploughing a lonely furrow, may just try it this w/end... but that will require some self discipline...!
