I find it amazing that Lance is not going to be team leader and try and help AC. I mean it makes sense in the cycling world, but outside of that sphere people will find it very underwhelming....i mean lance is the main event, the real deal, the big ticket!...its what the people want to see! Go Lance, Livestrong etc...not bloody 'Bertie Contador' (who!?) :(

This post is a pisstake, right?

    Nope.

I'm not sure it's possible to take your opinion seriously when you haven't heard of the second most famous rider (and three-time grand tour winner, and world's best rider, etc. etc.), in the race.

Of course i have heard of him. I was talking about the general public, the media etc. Lance is clearly a massive name and an 8th win would be massive...so I am suprised he is not number one in the team on pure economics.

You must be the grumpiest git on here!

He's not No1 in the team because he wasn't able to climb well enough in the Giro, while Contador has shown in a number of races already this year that he's still the best GC rider in the peleton. Being a massive name is lovely for Lance, but it's not going to help him if he still can't climb.
Maybe he will climb better than he managed in May, but thats for him to prove, not the team to assume.

Of all the times to have a tiff, why do you wait until the first HC of the tour?

    +1!

The best scenario would have been to have Lance in yellow after the TTT. That would have made things more competitive as Contador would have been forced to attack and the other riders would have to become more aggressive in the early stages.

What we now have is no guts no glory. No one wants to call the other ones bluff or play their hand beofe the other. So its the waiting game until statistics make it so they have to absolutely ride and attack.

Right now as long as everyone is in the group with yellow jersey their safe (and the yellow jersey isn't going to attack).

We're in dulls-ville people! Defensive riding all the way.

Now that Cancellara has been dropped, shouldn't Contador be attacking? If it ends as it is Armstrong is in yellow surely.

All hell should break loose next stage!

Calm down DDD, there are plenty of stages to come yet. Some big mountain stages that'll really test things.

I wonder, is LA playing a cunning game, cheering up AC while he bides his time, or has his mojo gone?

The mountains are gonna be fun!

AC's tour to lose though, surely?

It's gone. He can't outkick AC. He will have to grind him down, and that won't happen.

I just though of a scenario that could throw everything into a tailspin, what if AC gets caught doping? All LA needs to do is pour some EPO on his cornflakes and hey presto!

Contador was linked with the original Operation Puerto investigations, before being cleared by a Spanish court. The cloud of suspition hasn't drifted too far from though...
He wouldn't be the first teammate of Lance to be caught doping, now would he?

Wiggins did really well and as he's transforming himself into a climber (lost 7 kilos) I reckon he could get top 20 in the GC

I reckon thats gotta be three points in the Official Bikeradar Commuting Forum Tour Pundits intermediate sprint

    What got into them today?

Lance got stung! Wiggins climbing with the best! Cadel Evans attacked!

And what about Cancellara's descending... I winced a few times... eek!

The post-race was pretty interesting. AC said it was a "spontaneous" attack, because he say some GC rivals looking in trouble. LA was pretty clear that (a) it had not gone according to the team plan, and (b) he wasn't too pleased. Leipheimer & Kloden seem (for now, at least) to be riding for LA.

So AC puts in a little unplanned poke in the eye. That sort of thing can not go down too well in a team environment. If he has a bad day in the mountains, he will need to look to his team to help him. He might just find he's looking for a while.

That aside, it looked to me that no one can match AC's acceleration - for now. And Cadel's efforts looked rather meagre in comparison. Andy Schleck doesn't have the go-juice either - again, for now.

I'm now thinking that the really decisive moves aren't going to come until week 3. In the Grand Tours, you can separate the riders into those who get better in the third week and those who drop off. I suspect now that barring a top contender having a bad day and suddenly being spat out the back, Astana will control the race quite tightly for the next ten days. Then it will come down to the ITT and Ventoux.
