  • I really like that frame, its tempting. I like the Fury but the front wants to lift all the time on the steeper climbs even with lots of weight over the front wheel.

never really had that problem with this, it has a short-ish head tube so its easy to weight the front for climbs or when cornering, its a genuinely brilliant bike, the frames are relatively cheap too, and have just had a few tweaks for 2011 too, and some stunnig new colours as well 8)
  • Well its the new xc130 I'm looking at in the black, white and blue. My blue bits would swap over nicely too. It seems perfect for me, light enough to keep up on the xc stuff and then when you get to the technical singletrack with a few drops in, it'd handle then fine too.

But it'll have to wait as a new wheelset is first on the agenda and I've already buckled the standard rear wheel and I'm only 50KG. It wasn't even anything big. So Hope hubs with flows/archs are first up.

    kinesis make some awesome stuff.
i have a maxlight xc-pro with a full xc race build that just seams to eat my wallet every time i look at it. this month alone its had a new ea70 seat post, Thompson seat clamp, X0 rear mech and will be having a new crank brothers headset as soon as they come back in to stock every where. i wouldnt mind but being a roady the maxlight never gets used, she sure is pretty though.

Anyway i got a bit detracted in short... BUY A KINESIS FRAME you wont regret it

  • Hi

I was thinking of buying a XC120 Frame - and I just have a couple of questions.
    1) a lot of reviews state that the bottom bracket is too low - and the pedals touch the floor too often - is this true?
    2) what's the ideal travel for the front forks - could they be run at say 140mm? - I guess this would lift the bb up a bit as well?

    Thanks
  • thats awesome fella, bet you're well chuffed!

been a while since i posted here  well i have missed this bike since the mojo arrived, and compared to that it felt abit dated, well, probably old-school is a better description, so some of the ideas i love about the HD are being transferred to this, in aid of handling, fun and mega-lightness :D had a 1x10 drivetain in a box waiting for a few weeks now, xt shifter, chain and rear mech, pg1050 cassette, E-13 xcx guide and some new clarks cables, seeing as i haven't changed the goodridge outers in over three years!! few more things to come over the next few weeks, hopefully santa will bring some lovely new superstar wheels with crest rims for crimbo, then i'll move to the more "rad changes"... i works components do a headset which will knock 2.5 degrees off the headangle, bringing it right out to 66 degrees, and some nice superstar 780mm bars, probably chopped down admittedly to 750mm, just wanna have some HT fun tbh, because as a whole this bike has been bloody superb over the last 5 years, and it seems a darn shame to retire it now, so a real overhaul should get it down to fighting, 23lb weight no problems :D updates asap

Nice one, looking forward to this, IMO 66deg is an ideal head angle for anything other than a proper XC bike. Aside from the front wheel wandering a little on the climbs (which can be aided by being a more skilled rider) i can't see any disadvantages, the slacker the better IMO! Tempted to get some offset shock bushings for my rocky mountain to slacken it out a little more...

As for the 1x10, that was a long time coming also! If you're not riding it on the road and you're of a reasonable fitness, i see no reason not to have a 1x9/10 drivetrain!

yep i totally agree, 66 might be abit too slack, 66.5 would be perfect imo, retain some of the flickiness, just gonna try it out really, i can drop the forks down if need be. fitness isnt much of an issue really, ive coped everywhere on the HD so far, so a 1x10 23lb hardtail shouldnt be too hard :)

Aye, should be fine! Thinking of making some changes to my slayer actually after christmas if i can afford it, I think a dropper post (thinking KS i950 as i don't want one with a bar mount lever as i don't fancy using that seatpost when i ride downhill - had any experience with that post?) and some lyriks or 55's to replace the totems to make it a bit more XC friendly, bit like your mojo, but not as nice ;) haha

sounds goodsome lyriks would be awesome on a slayer, when the slayers first came out, in particular the 70 you have actually, i wanted one, between my group of mates at home there's 4 rocky's in total

not any direct experience with i950, but gazlar has one, seems to work well, definitely get the remote version, i thought like you at first, but you really do need a remote, otherwise its pretty pointless, run the lver under the bars on the right hand side to keep it out the way, job done :D

Ah cool, not as bad as the joplin then? :P
See, I would get a bar mounted one, but I ride downhill on the bike, as well as XC etc etc, and given the nature of downhill and how often I tend to crash, I'd probably want to take it off and swap it for a regular post when I take it out for downhill.

the joplin was good while it worked, it just didnt last long  tbf, mine was second hand and 2 years old, so its abit unfair to judge really, and i got it for 50 quid so i canny grumble!! if you crash alot, might be worth it then!!

not yet, will have a few next weekend, few issues on its first ride, so i didn't have time to get it sorted before going back to uni, shall be back next weekend to swap over again.

First impressions of all the new kit is very positive, all the xt stuff works flawlessly, as expected, 33t chainring and 11-32 cassette is abit different to the Mojo, but it seems good, the xcx is a top piece of kit, so glad i wnet for it over the superstar one, although having said this, superstar bars and wheels are spot on, even if the bars are abit wide for xc use at 780mm, will chop 'em down to 750 and see how that feels. but it was pretty faultless really, the maxlight itself feels completely alien, its so steep and twitchy its unreal!! planning how to fix that, got a few options so will see how it goes :)

i see. yeh, the new xt parts are really good!

i would check out works headsets http://www.workscomponents.co.uk/ they're abit cheaper than the cane creek angleset and people prefer these because apparently the angleset doesn't work that well. it creaks and is hard to set up

yep, already had a look at those, the EC44/44 would fit fine, and would knock 2.5 degrees off the head angle, as the cups are external as opposed to the internal ones in atm, just weighing up my options tbh :)

Right, just fitted and tested out some new 2012 XT M785 brakes, albeit without the Icetech rotors I've put on the Mojo with the same brakes, and jeezus wept they have some power!! Think I'm gonna have to stick a 160mm rotor on the rear just to keep it managable on here!! Both sets of hope brakes are sold, so funds are about for some changes, possibly a rather big one, will update as and when :D

Finally updated and finished it off, CRC sent wrong brake mounts, I blame wiggle etc etc

Any way here she is :D

superstar switch hubs and crest rims are great, bang on the stated weight, great quality build and they look fantastic, so far very pleased with them, will see how they hold up over the coming months.

Cut the bars to 740mm, feels perfect, very impressed with superstar once again, great bars at a great price, touch weighty, but for the money you cant complain!

Xt brakes are insane, had to downsize from 183/183mm to 180/160mm rotors to keep it in check, sensational power and great modulation, and quite possibly the best lever shape out there, look great too and incredible value at rosebikes, thoroughly recommended!

feels great to ride, the 1x10 is great and it drops yet more weigh, weight straight from Lbs with a sprinkling of mud was 22lbs 10oz, so very happy with it :D
  • Looks really nice! Was looking at getting the xt brakes from rose, did you have to swap levers over? If so, what was involved in the process?

yep' had to swap the hoses over, sent it to the LBS cos I don't have the kit to do it at uni, and it was cheaper than going home and doing it myself. pretty sure its not difficult to do though, had the brakes bled for good measure too.
  • Cheers, was trying to weigh up if it was worth the savings, if its a case of swapping hoses and bleeding then I reckon it would be an lbs job. Or I could get sed to the brakes being on the wrong side
