The "Cool Wall" of mountain bikes

It's amazing how the old Kona hardtail frames still look modern, whereas most hardtails of the era look clunky, or just like road bikes with smaller wheels.0
-
Kona were quiite early to adopt (but not the first) the sloping top tube geometry. Skinny7 steel seems modern now!0

^^Why THE HELL has that thing got tarmac tyres on?
What the flinking blip is it doing on tarmac anyway?0 -
Does this answer your search In a retro, french way?
Or this?

Agree with setspeed about the Pace & Kona - early Konas were cool & still are.
Pace RC100's were that rare blend of brilliance & cool.
The carbon thing is hideous in every way. It's just saying 'look how clever I am' which can never be cool... I'd like to see one after a typical UK ride. And I reckon whatever they claim about theoretical strength, one stone strike & it's finished! Which never looks cool.
Others I've just thought of are early Salsa bikes. The A la Carte like Jason McRoy used to ride was seriously cool. I also reckon that most fillet brazed frames are cool as long as the owner doesn't start explaining brazing techniques...
Couldn't find too many Salsa pics but here's the one I'm thinking of:
http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=561&g2_serialNumber=4
They looked better with original Rockshox though.
For me, the coolest bike will be if I ever get round to doing a frame builing course & making my own...0 -
Yes! Pace hardtails are wicked! I wanted one, loved the external butting
And I'm glad to see a GT LTS! Wasn't that one of the first bikes along with the Marin Mount Vision to really show how good full suss had the potential to be?
My contribution:
Could be converted to the Straight 8 DH bike, a design shared with YETI which won many races and trophies, one of the first pedigree all mountain bikes with a carbon fibre swing arm... Who said Scott were the first to put all mountain and carbon fibre together anyway? Fools. This is the bike of my childhood dreams0 -

Nice thread....
I have a marin attack trail 2006 and its brilliant in every way but def not cool...look at it for gods sake....the whole shape is so complicated....and that goes for all full sus, Theyre just not cool full stop.
In my opinion only a simple hardtail can be considered cool, like my new charge duster is gonna be
Agree with the specialised thing, my LBS stocks them and since the bike to work scheme thing has been running every man and his dog has one (usually with matching shoes/helmet etc ...yuk)...not cool
No one has mentioned the orange clockwork in the orange/white colourway....definitely cool...

I don'tknow how you can call specialized common and then try to champion an orange. They have infested trail centres and have that irritating freewheel thing. Not cool bikes!0
-
I agree, and I have one!0
-
i dont particularly like new oranges just that particular model. Specialized bikes are everywhere,...im not saying theyre not good bikes but cool? no way0
-
Now this is a cool bike...dunno what it is though lol
Pls remove if inappropriate, i blocked bits out but remove pic if needed. If you cant race it, and you can't take it to bed, what is the point?0 -
It's a specialized...
And why is there a blue snake on the floor?0 -
ha ha i think its rope...is she tied to the bike?0
-
Lol i was being facetious,
Specialized must be cool-ish to be used in "the" industry.
lol @ blue snake, i think hes next in lineIf you cant race it, and you can't take it to bed, what is the point?0 -
A specialized, but is it a *ockhopper or a hard*ock?0
-
yep shes tied to it lol just watched the vid
they lock her to a concrete post with her cheap bike lock at he endIf you cant race it, and you can't take it to bed, what is the point?0 -
I thought this was quite cool
Twin 8 pot caipers on the front, now that is 8)0 -
I like it but whats with the plant, whats that all about. If you cant race it, and you can't take it to bed, what is the point?0
-
Oh my goodness! You mean to suggest they are doing it!
There's a vid I'm off to find me a girl who is this understanding!0 -

Why? They're one of the most efficient inventions on the cycling circuit. If you can't handle the time don't the crime! Can't use them? Why the hate breadbin? :roll:0 -
I think because they're efficient they can not be cool...
Kinda like a diesel super mini...0 -
It is the rider that is efficient, not the pedals ;-)0
