I cycled through a bus priority lane in Lewisham a couple of years ago - which was green, and people were crossing on the main road bit which was red (to traffic).

Only one bloke hadn't realised (I assume) and as I zoomed though at 25 odd mph he stepped out without looking - I just managed to dodge him.

He took up chase. Now the bloke looked like a right nutter - and really hard - so I upped my speed and had no choice but to RLJ through the next set of lights - otherwise I reckon he would have kicked my head in (I'm a lover not a fighter).

So this tw@t who was so offended becasue he thought I'd gone through a red light actually ended up forcing me to RLJ.

I got away though, and I don;t go through Lewisham anymore.

    LMAO!

That said, this mob rule thing for peds is a bit of a problem. Not only have I (nearly) been unfairly attacked by a chav nutter in Lewisham but around Canary Wharf I used to use the riverside cycle track which occasionally would be swamped by peds. I would usually stop and wait for the herd of peds to pass before continuing on, all patient like.

Once whilst doing this a mild mannered bloke in a suit walked up to me, looked straight at me and gobbed right in my face and walked off.

I went after him, caught him up stopped in front of him - looked him straight in the eye, and said "why". He said nothing. so I made a clearing the throat noise as if I was about to gob and he legged it (reminded me of Basil fawlty :) ) - I've never seen a "city gent" run so fast.

I assume that the guy has had trouble with cyclists along there before and decided to take it out on me. god knows why.

Luckily it was raining and the gob on my face cleared away pretty quickly.

Sorry but it has to be asked: We're you in uniform? ;)

Not me it doesn't. In London if I see a ped approaching a curb, even if there are cars hurtling past and they have a clear view of said cars and me, I am very cautious until I've passed said ped as you can never be too sure if they'll simply step out into the road and expect traffic to immediately stop...

    It's war out there!!!

When walking in London, if I see a cyclist approaching, even if there are cars stopped at the light and the cyclist has a clear view of said cars, me and the red light, I am very cautious until said cyclist has passed as you can never be too sure if they'll simply jump the red and expect pedestrians to keep out of their way...

Its most certainly is war out there.... DaDum DumDaDUM DaDum DumDaDUM!
Nice sidestep. Now what exactly has it got to do with running jumping red lights, or more specifically running ped crossings?

There you go. See red lights as a perfect opportunity to learn to and then perfect your stands. ;)

Well no, not if the road's clear, but if I get to a red light, which looks clear with no peds crossing, no cars/buses etc about to move off, I slow to running pace and move slowly across the junction, then accelerate again at the other side.

You lot are the most baffling of all. The most reasonable reason for RLJing is to avoid losing the momentum which you've built up when you're feeling tired, riding into the wind etc. Understandable (if still wrong). But you guys slow right down and THEN RLJ? That's f***ing ludicrous.

Slow down but don't stop, so you still have momentum, also means you don't have to unclip, then cllip back into the pedals. There is reason behind the madness.

right. i have had enough of all these people saying they don't jump lights. I do. frequently in fact. if ever there is a red light and noone around, i am thorugh it like a falsh. similarly, when i can cross one side of the road i do, and they wait for the other side to be clear before contiuning with my RLJ.

i have had two incidents concerning RLJ. first one, i went over a red light and got hit by a car, my fault completely. ironically, i hadn't actually meant to. (it was on new kings road, where the junction with wandsworth bridge road is and i wasn't concentrating, saw cars filtering left and carried on)

second one, pulled up at a red light next to a police car, on a t junction. no cars coming, so i pulled through. couple minutes later i got stopped by that police car. they asked me if i had realised i had gone through a red ligth to which i replied did you realise you were in the designated cycle stopping area. he got back in his car and drove off.

now, both times i was very lucky it didn't turn out worse. I seem to bounce and my sharp wit obviously through him.

i don't think its a good thing, but i am not going to say it should never be done.

    discuss on the that people.

 Advertisement for not jumping lights if ever I read one...numpty

why a numpty. and i am not condoning RLJ or otherwise just saying that i do it and giving the only two examples out og hundreds where something has happened

Er, maybe because you choose to RLJ after having been hit by a car while doing so...

I thought I was being diplomatic with numpty...basically can't see what you are getting at with your post. I read it as stop going on about RLJ, I often do it and have only been hit by a car once and stopped by the police once (lucky not to be fined) and I'm fine. Maybe you are lucky but most people would have learnt by now. Before you say you only got hit by a car when you RLJ'd by "accident" this basically tells me you weren't paying attention so how safe can it be for you to RLJ?

ever considered that if we behave like road users we might be get treated as road users?

I just find it dissapointed that each time someone does it, it just reinforces the sterotype that we're all inconsiderate cunts.

Personally I find it hard to believe that there are people who stop at every single red light encountered in every single situation.

    I do.

I do creep the line quite a lot, which is technically the offence we're talking about, but I don't go through.
  • There are 4 sets of lights on my commute to work. Non offer perfect visability of what maybe comming through. If the lights are red, I stop. Chance to get my breath. One is at the bottom of a steep hill, the second is mid point, the next 2 are near the top.

I also run on these roads - pavements, as do others , I know that a runner can suddenly shoot out and dive across the road. Can't say I'd like to be sandwhiched between car / runner and road it and it be my fault for rlj.

If I'm not going to stop at a red light it's cos I've dismounted my pushie and am now technically a pedestrian.

I always stop at red lights on my motorbike. Why should I behave any different on a pushie? Just one rule I wont break. My life, my choice.
