51 is not a danerously low resting heart rate so I wouldn't worry. In fact it's most likely a good sign. Just keep an eye on it and if it fluctuates a lot, have a rest day or 2. I'd also recommend taking your heart rate at rest a few minutes after you wake up. If you're not already that is..0 -

Hi Sampras38, My history is this:-
I 'was' 18stone 2lbs, but allways felt fit and could run around 5 miles no problem, however during a routine check at the docs, he said my blood pressure was a little on the high side, i think at the time it was around 145-150/90ish.......
He asked me if i was anxious, and worried about having it taken, i said no, and he said that he would recommend i come down every day for a week and they will take an average, but it didn't really move any lower....
He said that its important to keep an eye on it as if it doesn't reduce then i'll have to take tablets, so i purchased an OMRON upper arm blood pressure monitor (the exact same one now being used by the medical profession in place of the mercury types) and i took it down to the surgery to check that it was accurate, they tested it against the mercury type and it was 1ml of mercury out, which would have most probably have been the case with the mercury monitor if you had taken two readings in a row, they would have been slighly different, so all was well with the OMRON.
Several months past, i was still eating crap and not excercising, then about 8 weeks ago i decided to start excercising to loose some weight for my holiday, as my stomach was so bloated and hanging over my trousers when i sat down  , and here i am really enjoying bike riding at 5am every morning!
I ride every morning, and 'sometimes' will do a morning and evening ride, depending on how i feel, my weight has dropped from 18st 2lbs, down to 15stone 4lbs, its slowing down now, as i was loosing pounds every day i stood on the scales, however now its seems to be slowing down and i'm only loosing a couple of pounds a week......
I'm on the smallest hole on my belt now, and can take my trousers and jeans off without having to undo them! My stomach has pretty much gone dead flat now, and best of all i have NO loose skin! Will have to purchase a new belt and new clothes within the next couple of weeks, which will tie in nicely with buying new clothes for holiday, so quite nice timing.
However, i've received many comments from work colleagues that my face has changed shape  but i've lost my tripple chin
One person told me yesterday that i've lost too much weight, however i'm still 15stone 5lbs and intend to get into the 14's before i go on holiday....
I take my bloody pressure and heart rate in the morning (not every day) and at different times during the day.
This morning my blood pressure was 115/65, which from 144-150ish/90 is a significant improvement and i'm really happy with it, as now i won't have to take tablets!!
Also, my heart rate fluctuates, however i wouldn't say it fluctuates anymore than anybody elses, it fluctuates from 51bpm when i wake up, and if i take it in the afternoon its around 55-58bpm....so i think this is fine...
Although i allways used to be fit and workout (weight and martial arts) in my teens and twenties, i'm now 36, i've NEVER had a heart rate this low before, and i allways knew that aerobic excercise offered the best form of cardiovascular excercise and the benefits of a smooth running cardio system was a reduced heart rate, however i never knew it would be this easy to achieve, i really didn't, i allways had a resting heart rate of around 70ish, and to drop nearly 20bpm this quickly into training (8 weeks ish) i think has been really easy, i allways thought it would have taken years and years of training, but how wrong i was.
Anybody else reading this thread that was in the same position as i was, i.e., overweight, with high bloodpressure, i would highly recommend getting a bike and if you allready have one like i had, then start using it! You will be presently surprised of the results you can achieve in a very short time by reducing your calories (ok maybe not as low as i did) and excercising on a daily basis - and best of all? You will enjoy every minute of it i'm sure!My Road Bike:-

i dont see why you reduce your calories so much if your cycling. if you very active you will probably need around 2500-3000 calories a day based on your basal metabolic rate. you eat 500-800 calories less than you require and you will lose weight effectively. if you training then body will take longer to repair with less calories.
i surprised nobody spoke of metabolism. being 18stone and not active you metabolism been non existent. now you do that exercise you kickstarted your metabolism alot. so burn fat even when you asleep. better to eat right and enough to maximize training to increase metabolism even more.
eating alot less calories than body requires is counter productive. it is harder to burn fat as body tries to hang on to even more for survival. also your metabolism slows down so less effective at burning fat. you need to workout how many calories you need from your age height weight.
add plenty of cayenne pepper to the curries and you lose more weight as it increases metabolism.. better still just dont eat curries for few months while you drop weight.
eat lots of apples like 3 a day. they really effective for losing weight and healthy.0 -

I agree with this 100%.
I have a real issue with decreasing your calories so much to lose weight quickly. Yes the weight will come off but it's not healthy, and I still think you'll struggle to keep it off long-term. I appreciate you have set weight goals but personally I would increase the calorie intake and let the weight come off slower. If you're eating and training right it will happen.0 -

Yo yo dieting is just so wrong it's not funny..
I'd like to think I know a little about this stuff having studied sports nutrition in my degree.
But hey...0
