Personally, i won't go below 20lbs. I ride a couple of times a week - generally 20 odd miles on a week night and one (sometimes two) longer rides at the weekend - all weathers, all (99%) offroad, some quick, rough downhills, and the bike just generally takes a bit of a beating. I just wouldn't trust anything too light in my hands. When i set out, i wanted to build something light but not sometihing i was going to pussy-foot around and be worried about breaking.

Even with my bike at it's current weight (similar to ADBs) I'm being a little careful - don't want to snap those carbon brakes levers or the nice carbon bar!

I think when bikes get too light, they get too "skittish" and twitchy. Still pretty cool though. I remember helping a few people over a stream on Dartmoor - one has a Klein that was insanely light. Even had V brakes to save weight! Must have been around 18lbs - felt similar to my road bike - there was just nothing to it! It stood up to the ride well enough though.

My dad's XC bike is around 27.5 lbs, which I think is light enough (for average XC at least), I can't imagine what this would feel like to ride  I like heavy bikes, they just feel more stable

No offence but 27.5 lbs is not really average for an XC bike - i would say it's heavy. My mates all mountain thing he's built could probably withstand a nuclear holocaust and *only* weighs 30 lbs. I would say 25 lbs is average for an XC bike.

But then that depends on what you class as XC and also what you class as heavy - everybody's different and nobody's right or wrong!

The Lobster feels light and nimble but also planted and sturdy - you certainly don't feel like it;s going to break at any point, and i've never felt it acting skittishly (which, like Matt says, is a problem with some very light bikes).

I meant for average XC riding, not an average XC bike  The bike was a custom build for £510 so not top spec  hence it's weight. But that's just my opinion, I like heavy bikes. (Does that make me weird?!)

Mrs Matt's 2008 Rockhopper Disk (£600) does feel very "stable" and dependable on the trail and seems stronger - I guess it's about 28lbs or so?

I prefer the darty feel of my Stumpy (obviously) that climbs like a startled goat but I can see the appeal - the relaxed geometry of the RH is also more "accessible" I reckon.

Lighter is not always best but to some, it's pretty nice.

Adb - what's your bike made of? I see they do a Ti version - nice!

I've been looking at a few ti and carbon frames (anyone know about the On One carbon whippet or Cotic Soda) too...

    Uh oh...

I've taken an unhealthy interest in the Be One Black Carbon

I'm thinking that lighter wheels/tyres and forks will feed my weight weenie habit though :P

the whippet is hopefully sub 1kg, probably around 950g given the weight of the carbon 29er is sub 999g. Supposed to be £499 when released. They even thinking of offering custom pait jobs.

If things around the house would stop breaking, then I'd get this when I 'upgrade' the forks and wheels on the Barry White after spending another month on call. If not then I might get it when I sell the FSR that's been sat in my shed virtually unused for 7 months.
Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.

    Who are you calling inbred?

Ditto man... im 5ft 10 with a 30.5" leg... im wondering if its a generous 17" (ie: equivalent to a regular 18") as I am generally 18" on every bike I ride. :)

Possibly - although i'm only 5'9" i've got fairly long legs i suppose. I wouldn't want/couldn't get on with either the 15" or 19" versions, that's for sure.

New pic from the weekend - just thought it looked cool so i would share. New saddle (Selle Italia SLR) and rear tyre (Spesh Renegade) since the previous pics i think.

Loving the new tyre - good grip, very low rolling resistance, tubeless and only 404g :D

Simples really... You leave enough slack on the cable so that the max throw on the lever cannot chuck it off.... But would have thought it would comprimise the shift....

Did you not look at SRAM from mechs? I was looking at a XX one the other day... was a good few grams lighter ;)

Not sure how you'd go about it with a trigger but with a twist shifter it's easy. It takes three clicks to go from bottom to top and vice versa. You just have to remember not to shift past either ring - i've been running it quite a while and it's never happened yet!

This is just set-up with a twister - i only use the 3 clicks within the range that take it from small to big and back again. I put the twister on and realised the mech never got anywhere near either limit screw so just took them out. It's alright if you're aware of it and you don't just twist away like a mad man!

Re. the XX, i had the XT before XX was out i think. A mate bought a new frame and the XT didn't fit so i inherited it - wasn't gonna grumble for £0.00 :D

It's not too bad anyway at 141g. I am thinking about a road front mech though as this isn't a perfect fit for my frame. It does for now though.
  • first al say hi as this is a first for me. I have just completed my rock lobster team tig sl build and i am impressed i thought the 17" may have been a little small as i am 5'10" but with a 110 stem its perfect.
just looking for some new forks and wheels as i am currently using my old sid's and a cheep ish set of wheels. any rceomendations guys?
