Has to be supplied by a dealer to get the warranty. Doing some googling of phone numbers makes me think this lot might be Tredz in Cardiff (is Cardiff near Swansea? I dunno. It's all Wales), who are an authorised dealer. Not sure how easy it is for the distrib to to pull frames across the dealer network. Might have to look into that asap.

I never thought anyone would have to tell you to be more assertive.
  • That is Tredz. I know they had the frame in Cardiff, but I'm not sure if they transfered the frame to Swansea. Speak to Mike in Cardiff, or Nick or Gus in Swansea. They are the guys that know whats what and should be able to sort you out.

Mmmm... I quite like that. And I do try and choose my bikes by their colour, though the boys I take bike shopping with me never let me.

I very nearly bought a TCR with that paint job when shopping for my road bike- it was a very goodt deal, but in the end it was just too hideous.

As for the Cervelo, I sort of agree with what LiT is saying about making a stink but that's probably just going to result in a lot of stress and bad feeling which isn't going to help you, so the straight replacement with the current version is probably the best bet. The red and white looks OK to me...

Take a picture of the crack - Photoshop it so the frame is black and then ask for the replacement in black!

That's harsh, given Mr66's last few months of commute..................... :D

Gregg I had a Fausto Coppi which I loved (ok so nowhere near your bikes league) and the frame went (unrepairable split) - I was gutted

I ended up getting a carbon Trek which I love even more now. Good luck with thereplacement. The red and white one is a shocker! just don't do it

  • Sorry to hear about your bike woes Mr G66 :-(
I'd probably personally try to track down a frame in the correct colour as that new red/white combo just doesn't look as good as the black...........if you did want to upgrade there is always the 09' Prince your friend tried in GB Cycles? That was black and DAMN sexy

Also DDD go and scrub your keyboard for suggesting the Prince is a Langster!!!!

Greg, you'll never be happy with the 2009 Cervelo. If you can afford an alternate option then go for it because if you accept the 09 Cervelo you won't like and probably won't ride it much - if at all. I am the same way, no point buying/accepting (under these circumstance) something that you don't want especially if you originally spent money in the first place.

It's like buying a car you love, having it recalled and then given a replacement in pink... I couldn't live with that.
    nxwm4266.jpg

This is why I could never buy a red car even a Ferrari in red.

Also given how much we (cyclists) hate buses there is no way I could willingly by a bike with the same colour scheme as a bus. No way.

If you have the money, the other options are more viable. So upgrade, phone them up directly to find out if their suppliers have a small/minor surplus of old models (a Wilier Thor 2007 was recently delivered to DeVer cycles) - could happen.

Or do what you have to in order to buy a different make.

This is really weird. Does no-one prefer the sexy, simply, classy lines of the red and white Cervelo to the yawnsome tedium of the black?

I've always liked the anodised black of the Cervelo, stick a scrolling red back light on it and it'll look like Kightrider.....

I wouldn't say no to the red and white one (but then I couldn't afford it so my default choice is yes) but coming from Kightrider, if you had the choice of both, would be too big a leap... I think.

Also Biondino, isn't your bike black?

  • Oh man. That sucks. Two thoughts:

    1) I agree that the S1 looks like it's come straight from an Argos catelogue in the publicity shots, but I don't think it looks so bad in the flesh. The bugger'll take a bit of cleaning if you use in the rain mind (and I still don't know what possesed Cervelo to change things in the first place).

    2) If the S1s out and you can't bear carbon for a winter bike, what about other high-end alu frames like the De Rosa Team? Overpriced I'm sure but at least you get a swanky integrated seatpost.

Dunston - good to hear from you. I feel pretty bad about having put you on the Cervelo train. Hope your is OK. There's a picture here. You might want to check yours; I stripped mine down three weeks ago and completely missed it.

And before everyone chips in with "that! that's pathetic! That's not a warranty issue", I'm inclined to agree. But Cervelo CS in Canada said otherwise, when I spoke to them last night and pointed them at that pic. The crack on mine is about twice that length. And I've noticed the beginnings of a shorter one on the other side.

Well, I used to think I liked something a little louder. I used to have this:

which seemed like a good idea before I bought it. Trouble is, it's like driving round in a bright red convertible Lambor-rari-gatti (even without those wheels on it). Everyone wants to put you to the sword. It gets tiresome faster than you'd think.

  • No worries. I still can't get enough of it and there's no crack in mine - yet at least.

Oh yes. Thought 3: What about steel? Colnago Master X-Lite frameset comes in at about a grand doesn't it? That's a pretty sweet looking frame.

At the moment I'm thinking about a warranty replacement + no cash spend. If it becomes a warranty replacement + cash spend to upgrade, I'll think about what else I might get, although I haven't yet found out whether I can have a new frame *or* cash under the warranty. Maybe it's just a new frame.

  • Sh*t. After glancing at the bike this morning on the back of a quick parousal of this thread and blythly declaring it crack free above I just took a closer look in the daylight, with that picture for reference. Guess what? I have a 3-4mm long crack in the exact same place and a 2mm crack on the otherside. Both hairline, but unmistakable nonetheless. Sh*t sh*t sh*t sh*t sh*t.

Just phoned EBC where I bought if from and they're going to come and pick it up so they can have a better look at it next week. But that still means:
    a) I have to debuild the damn thing.
    b) If EBC (and Cervelo) agree this is a frame failure then I still have to wait on a new frame (for how long?), which;
    c) Will be in that cretinous red and white colour; and
    d) I will have to build up again, meaning
    e) All this time I will have no bike to ride that's up to the job, and so will have to commute in the c*r.
    f) Finally of course, EBC may be 'difficult' (though they've been very helpful so far), in which case I stil have to go through a, b, d, e as above but with my exisitng frame this time.
    g) sh*t.

Half of me's tempted to just ride the thing and pretend the crack doesn't exist. It is only hairline afterall. But what if it fails on me? What if it gets worse in future only for me to have 'shot my bolt' with the EBC this time?

    Sh*t.

I guess a plus about a crack in the seatpost is that even in the event of catastrophic failure the potential for a bad accident is minimsed - after all, if you're sitting down then a) you're not putting too much power through and b) a lot of your weight and balance is in the pedals rather than the seatpost.

See, now you mention it I think that's what I would have done - deliberately don't mention it to the bike shop and continue riding in the hope that next year's frame colours are nicer and the bike will last until then :)

:) TBH I can live with the new frame colour, it's more the question of having to go through the palaver of debuilding/building and having no bike for... how long? a week? 3 months? who knows? I am a competent-ish bike mechanic when pushed but I don't actually enjoy 'tinkering' very much which makes the whole thing feel like an aggravating faff. I would rather just ride the bloody thing. Maybe I should just live with it and wait until it gets gets worse before pursuing it further... Or is that just stupid, lazy and dangerous?
  • S_G_I - you've got pm.

I can't see that there can be an objection to you riding it until it falls apart. The caveat is that once you're aware of it and continue to ride, you won't have a viable claim against anyone if you're injured as a result of the frame failure.

If the crack propagates all the way round the seat tube, the seat post still won't come out. I can't see it being a(n anally) catastrophic failure.

Cervelo are on whatever the reverse of a roll is with their colour schemes though. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for one that's nice.

Well you've already notified the shop you bought it from so that makes it a bit tricky to keep riding on it really.
  • I have just explained the situation to my wife. She cares NOTHING for bikes, yet even she said the new S1 colours made it look like - and I quote - "a girls' mountain bike". :(

EBC are sending somebody to pick up the frame on Monday... :(
  • Can't you just get the replacement frame, sell it, and buy a nice black alu frame from a reliable brand?

    +1

It's story like this that really put me off getting a high end bike (well at least a Cervelo) which is a shame as I'd love to ride and own a top bit of kit! On the flipside tho hearing about how they are offering to help (albeit with a bike of questionable colour!) resolve the issues your are experiencing.
