Leave Dennis alone, he's our campaigner for steel bikes, low gears, and handbuilt wheels.

Bikeradar would not be the same without him. I like his alternate views, although some of the crap he spouts in the Race section is a bit weird

I have honestly quit the race section. Never to return. Much to the joy of most on it.:wink:

And I still say this post was to get people doing to Shimano vs Campy thing.
It's like writting in and asking how to operate a car. Go down to the local bike shop. Take a look if you really don't know. Plus a few of these posters seem to know you and they are cyclists. Why don't they explain it to you some day when you see them? 2000 some posts this year yet you claim to not know anything about all this? Sorry, but I don't believe you. No big deal, it doesn't matter.:wink:

  • Ahhhh thanks for leaping to my defence, you lot are nice blokes/burds!

To be fair to Dennis, he wasn't to know that I have in fact never ridden a road bike with shifters on the handlebars - he probably didn't read all my previous posts before making his conclusions - fair play, there's been a few! And it's not unfair to conclude from the sheer (slightly embarrassing) quantity of my posts that I ought to know stuff. Actually I mostly talk rubbish. ;)

Dennis, for your info, the only geared bikes I've had have been one 90's MTB with normal flat bar thumb push type levers, one shopper with hub gears and a thumb push type lever which quickly broke and became a SS, and the rubbish roadie in my sig links which has downtube shifters.

I agree that I could have consulted a bike shop, indeed I did - the guys who I'm planning to get the bike from - but they confused me with technical jargon by email, so I consulted with people who know and also know me... and who I know won't take the mickey... much!

    Thanks for all your help!

I don't see much of them... and I did ask them... see above!!

Dennis search this forum for topics on gear inches and massive rings, fixed wheel commuting, read them ALL, stand back in shock and awe (hope that's the right spelling) then delete your account, quit cycling and become a hermit drinking only aqua vita and eating bitter leaves.

PS. See LiT's awesome RP fixed gear night rides.

PPS. If you really want to redeem yourself next time you find you're self in the UK make the Morepth Arm's one of you're point of call.

You're way out of your depth on this one, Noward, way out of your depth. Are you going to apologise to the lady or are you actively hoping to become the villain on the commuting forum as well?

I find that the Campag levers are a more comfortable shape - I find the shimano ultegra levers on my CF bike a little large and I have large hands. The campag hood are a better shape for my hands.

Performance wise I have one road bike with campag centaur and another with shimano ultegra. Both perfom brilliantly, both are well made

The shimano gear shifts are almost imperceptable, the Campag have a more positive and noticible clunk letting you know you changed. The button on the lever to change up a gear on the Campag is perhaps a little easier to use without thinking but again nothing in it.

The ULtegra brakes are dual pivot front and rear but not sure if you need that extra leverage on the rear wheel. Again both stop well especially if you use aftermarket pads such as koolstop.

Ultimatly it comes down to what you like the look of. Very little to choose between in terms of performance.

Oh, lets not over react. Very minor faux pas, the only thing we need to do is boycott the forum, ask all our ISP's to block the site and quit cycling in disgust. Then we should all visit LiT in hospital and offer our support for her to overcome our trauma, and take pictures of Dennis being burned at the stake to cheer her up.

(Dennis - you don't mind the whole stake thing do you? If its too cold over there just now, it might be okay to simply impale yourself on it instead, but obviously you'd need persmission from the Morpeth Massiv.)

So back on track then, why don't we settle this with a gathering of groupsets in one location, for an honest and frank beer fuelled Shimano vs Campagnolo full on hair pulling wrist slapping session, on the sacred ground of the 'The Morpeth Arms'

The cyclist version of show and tell, i'm sure the other people in the pub would be fascinated to hear us extolling the virtues of double shifting and the beautiful clean lines of carbon weave.

    I've read through a few of her 2200+ posts(in less than a year)(on a cycling forum).
I found that not too long ago she advised someone(with links) to go to various cycling
video sites to find info about Sora-Tiagra group sets. Another post of hers talked about
chain tensioners and QR's(and she seemed very knowledgeable). I don't doubt her
qualifications, I doubt her NOT knowing what those levers are for on a bike. Add to that the fact that it always seems that someone is trying to start up the old Shimano-Campy
debate and you have my suspicion that that's what this post was all about. Not that I care
if people want to debate that subject, even to the ends of the earth, I enjoy reading some of it. I was simply making the comment that I thought it was another "troll". Of which there are a fair share of on all parts of this forum. People want people to respond to them.
    Hence the trolling.
In any case I sincerely apoligize to LiT, if, in fact, she actually doesn't know what those
levers do and / or how they work. I really do.

    Dennis Noward
  • i think you need to read those or some posts, LIT has not shown trolling tendies to the best of my knowledge ( i don't read her every word) she's stayed clear of helmet etc threads. and such.

some times questions have to be asked, i my self took a while to work out what on earth was the shimano/campy blood match over.

there has be banter but not a full on slagging match that alone should give you a hint. which is long way of saying your wrong, by quite some margin. that you think it's trolling is all about you than any thing else.

So I've come up with a plan, I make a complete mess of the house, which I never normally do  used coffee cups, multiple plates, sink full to the brim and dishwasher empty, bread crumbs over the worktops, Mrs ITB explodes with anger in the rage doesn't notice the boxes full of bike parts and mud all over the living room carpet, ace!

You did a great job on 'Don Hislop' some time ago. I think there's another challenge here
  • Dennis, apology accepted, I don't know how I can prove to you that I didn't know the difference/anything! I trawled the web, unsuccessfully and knew these guys would help me out. I wouldn't bother asking a question I already knew the answer to!

ITB - grab some soda water and salt and get to cleaning the carpet. Silly person.

And happy new year to you too don_don!

Oh and if you're in the copse across the road again, I have run out of vegemite...

Dennis - go and check out the "Embarrassing Bike Questions" thread - you'll love it there, full of trolls asking questions that people calling themselves "experienced cyclists" should know :D

BTW why is going into a bike shop and asking the difference between Campy and Shimano ok, but not on a web forum?
