Nice to see so many people writing what you've been up to so far this week...
I did my third exercise bike session of the week last night and I've done a 90 minute hilly 'power-walk' too. Together with cutting right back on the beer, and watching the food intake, this is already starting to take effect. I feel better, and the scales are noticing too !

I still have a hell of a long way to go though. I've just taken a snap of my flabby belly with my webcam - blimey it's bad! Somehow the photograph makes it look worse than the mirror. I'm not posting the picture here, but I'm going to stick it in the 'weight loss' category on my blog. The idea is to spend the next 6 months charting my progress from where I am now to where I want to be. It will be hard work, but a good challenge.
  • Been feeling sick for the last 3 days so have not been out this week at all after wanting to do 113 miles . Weight has stayed the same though.
Just bought myself a Garmin Edge 705 as consolation so that I can track my rides once I am feeling better!
17 Stone down to 12.5 now raring to get back on the bike!
  • doing really well eating wise keeping off the cakes and biscuits, havent managed to get out on the bike except 16mile commute each day, weigh in day tomorrow woohoo....... fingers crossed

was it just me or were pedestrians particular dozy today nearly got stepped in front of 4 times on way home......
  • progress this week:

sunday - 60 mile ride in the hills
weds- started commuting on bike. Round trip between 8 and 16 mile each day (visit son on 2 evenings) and trying to average 18mph, although on MTB so rolling resistance is certainly not negligible :?

cutting back on calorie intake too..will see effect at weigh-in tomorrow.....

As I dont have a power meter, I'm using BMI as a target measure - 21.5, which equates to a weight for my height (1.88m) of 75-76kgs, or a loss of 15kgs from base position!!

  • a_n_t,

just checked the forum on the wheelers site & it seems to be from the Hilton.

what kind of pace will they be going at - not wanting a repeat performance this week, and still on my MTB

think both the long and short runs are starting from the same place. No one gets left behind on the short one really, unless you pootle along at 10mph! Cant speak for the long one as in theory they aren't obliged to wait for stragglers [I've been dropped before  ] but depends how they're going I guess.

I'm probably doing the chaingang sat a.m. so not sure if i'm going on sunday too!

What does the chaingang involve exactly? Not that im thinking of going along, just idle curiosity and maybe something to aspire to :)

Billy, without stating the bleedin' obvious, make sure your tyres are pumped up nice and hard to reduce your rolling resistance. Won't help on the hills as much obviously but may make a difference when you're on the flat sections. As Ant says, you shouldnt be left behind on the shorter ride unless you're really pootling

I won't be there either on Sunday, but hope you & Blue enjoy the ride, they're a friendly bunch.

As you say, meeting point is outside the Hilton on Deansgate this week

It involves bunch riding at higher speed and is used as training for the racing season. Becuase of this it is intended to be hard

Where it is safe to do so the bunch will be doing "through and off" which means there will betwo lines, one line will be heading forwards realtive to the other as you get to the front of that line and clear of the rider in the other line you move across in front of them and the next rider behind you comes through. In effect within the two lines the riders are going in a circular pattern.

You achieve higher speeds in the chaingang because you ride close to the rider in front. The idea is not to blast off the front so the guy behind can't keep up but to maintain a constantly high speed of the whole bunch.

It helps improve bike handling and bunch riding skills. But does require a certain level of confidence and ability to start with. That said as the group is just starting and there's newer riders, the main focus for the first few weeks is technique rather than speed. Speed will be approx 20 mph ave.

The downside is if you can't keep up you are dropped and there is definitely no waiting or slowing down in the chaingang. The upside is that the planned circuit has a couple of short cuts so if you get dropped you can catch up and get back on (or wait for the bunch to come around again)

    Hope that helps

I average around 15mph - around 20-22mph on the flat and sloooooooow on the hills (that's why I have to get rid of that stone and more). We haven't got to the details of pace and stuff. I'm sure that whatever we do we should have a principle that no one gets dropped. When I went out on a club run for the one and only time, I was no where near the pace of the pack so someone stayed at the back with me (my engine wasn't quite right at that time but I didn't know it - I really should try a club run again one time). I think we should do something similar or as you suggest, have a fast group and a slower group?

I think we'll have to start a separate thread as there may be other north west riders who may miss it if it remains hidden within the Cheshire Cat thread. Watch this space - well that space over in sportives :-)

Ok sounds reasonable, but certainly for me at the moment my objectives don't require a 75 mile ride, becuase I'm riding the mid distance CC ride, so something in the region of 50 miles + hills would be appropriate.

I'll keep an eye out for a specific thread, and if the issue of longer/faster/shorter/slower comes up then I'd be happy to get involved with a shorter/slower route.

Wed club turbo session, a hour yoyo 75% - 85% MHR and some sprints - felt dead
Fri club turbo session 75 min, 75%, 80% and 85% MHR then sprint intervals - felt good
    Weight - no change
    I want to climb hills so badly;

I thought I'd had a good week - three rides so far, another planned for tomorrow plus lots of small core stability sessions while I'm watching TV at night. I've eaten well - all good healthy foods, 4 small meals a day etc. I was really confident about stepping on the scales on Monday morning. So excited that I got up this morning and had a sneaky peak.......exact same weight! Still a couple of days before my official weighing session on Monday morning but I'm a bit disappointed.

Don't lose heart! it'll take a while for your increased metabloism to kick in.

At least you can get on the bike, I've failed already because it turns out I have bronchitis and have been told to rest for 3 weeks. :x

Seriously gutted as my power numbers were coming up very nicely.

Try not to be disheartened. I was getting that every week, my weight just stuck firmly at just over 10 stone (eeek!). In the end i figured it could only be my diet holding me back. So i started making a list of everything i was eating in a day. I was quite shocked at the outcome. Not saying that applies to you, but try it.
I also now use smaller plates. It really works!

Im still having a fairly crap week. Ive only done 30 miles this week. But with a ride planned for tomorrow i should be able to get it to somewhere near respectable. But nothing like i was hoping. Bloody damn ice and frost!

I was more concerned about myself not being able to remember what to post come Monday so I need a handy way of recording what I did. I am a blonde.

Have just added the Tri & Train thing, what a good little gadget. (taking nothing away from here of course)

Handy for keeping track of those things (such as the gym) which Garmin training centre dosen't record!
