"Fat Bastard" has a certain ring to it and i can relate to that name..
Well i went out for a tiny 14 miler and stopped three times on the first hill, not a good sign this might be tougher than i thought this time, it was cold though!. Average speed over the eventual 20 miles just over 10MPH. Tucked into some shortbread on my return followed by a chocolate mini roll and a medicinal bowl of creamy rice pudding. Just being honest but i think i will have to try a bit harder.0 -
STG - actually get out on bike
LTG - be able to do social runs to Leeds & Liverpool on the bike
RBIT (Andy)0 -
Im having a terrible week so far. I was out on the bike on Sunday but yesterday and today it has been too icey and ive been stuffing my fat face with biscuits through sheer boredom. And i should be setting a gleaming example... <tut>0
-
I've had 3 mince pies today.
Does that make you feel any better?0 -
No.
I've had a plethora of biscuits, a full fat yoghurt, a packet of crisps and a lorra lorra sweets. I feel so ashaaaaamed! [pokes self in eye with a blunt stick]0 -

Right sod this, didn't get to the Gym today as by time dared to get out from under duvet didn't have time abd had to go to bastard work, then forgot training kit so couldnt even go for a run at lunchtime (and wasnt about to start running around Hyde park in my pants (although if you all chip in a tenner ill do it!)
As a result I am going to consider a new thread, and a new challenge, one I think is more aham likley given my current form...

Need to get this sorted!!!!0 -
I just had a long chat with my coach and we talked about the whole "diet" thing. I get so hungry around 5pm and we worked out that I'm just not eating enough in the first part of the day. Yesterday I had huge bowl of porridge for breakfast, soup and roll for lunch, banana and some nuts as a snack and then by 5 ish, I feel like I'm completely empty and the kids leftovers look really tempting (even the bits on the floor). Today, I'm going to try to eat a larger lunch and split my evening meal into two - something around 5pm to keep me going until 8ish, when I'll have a smaller than usual tea.
I'm not going out there again today. Rollers it is.0 -
Sounds a good plan popette...0

There was a documentary on ITV last night where the normally curvy/slimmish TV star Claire Sweeney stopped her daily exercise routine and gave up her normal healthy diet for six weeks. Okay, it was pretty obvious what would happen and it has been done before, but it was pretty scary to see how quickly her body got unfit and flabby. She put on about nearly 28 pounds(2 stone, 12.5 kg)) in that short space of time.
She normal denies herself stuff like pizza and chips, but once she relaxed her rules she got right back into them again. There was one scene in Los Angeles where she was pigging out on the most ridiculous burger you've ever seen. It was so big that she could hardly pick it up.
It certainly reminded me that once I've got my flab off, I've got to make damn sure it doesn't come back on again. For some people, it comes naturally. For others, like me (us?) it takes vigilance.0 -
Just calculated my BMI too - 26.01.
given my height I need to loose 15kgs to get down to the "bikers" norm of 21.5-22.0.
How can you calculate your power without buying an expensive computer-gizmo to sit on your handlebars?0 -

I have a similar problem. I get the start of the day right - a good big bowl of porridge with added dried fruit and a banana chopped over it. Then I completely forget about food all day.
Yesterday, I'd intended to get on my exercise bike at about 5 pm, but I suddenly realised that I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast. It seemed too late to have a snack. I don't like exercising straight after eating. I could see me snacking at 5:00, exercising at 6:00, bathing at 7:00, cooking at 7:30, eating at 8:15, and before you know it, it would be 9:00 and I had lots of things planned for the evening. Something had to give...
In the end, I skipped the snack, exercise, bath and headed straight for the kitchen. I made myself a big veggie chilli and looked at it and realised that I was about to eat the whole lot in one sitting. Then I had a flash of inspiration - I made it about 20% bigger by adding extra vegetables! It was now obviously more than even a hungry me could sensibly manage, so I split it in two and put the other half in the freezer for another evening. That's killed two birds with one stone - I managed a 40% reduction in what I ate at that meal. Next time I want to squeeze in an exercise session, I won't have to worry about cooking afterwards 8) .
I'm going to start eating more during the day. If I eat less at night, I can afford to start making afternoon smoothies again - yum yum! I've also got a lot of nuts, seeds and dried fruit in. They make a healthy, convenient snack. (Yes, I know that they are energy-dense, but they are nutritious. Small portions only!).
It's the exercise bike for me this afternoon (unless I opt for a hilly power-walk instead).0 -
or plan ahead, and cook a meal you like and cook enough for 3 or 4 medium portions...
breakfast - bowl of museli
morning snack - apple & orange
lunch - s/wich, usually tuna & pepper (homemade) or Mon / Tues is remaining sunday tea
pm snack - another apple & banana
tea - depends....usually pasta, rice with chicken & veg (cooked in batches which last almost a wek) and then 2 yoghurts. cuts down cost and also time required.
that lasts me through the day, gives me enough ebergy to do what I want and normally means that i am just getting a bit peckish by bedtime as I try hard to eat nothing after 9pm.
currently I trying hard to make sure at work I have 2 or 3 waters for each coffee to avoid dehydrating....0 -
just had a google of power meters - most are coming in at over £600 each....!!

Some people have that kind of spare cash! Not me personally at the moment. I will be getting an interest free credit card to buy one though!
You can get them quite a bit cheaper second hand though17 Stone down to 12.5 now raring to get back on the bike!0 -

Some HRM's will give a power reading, but as for accuracy....................0 -

Ok, week 0 was 89.1, week 1 (tonight) 89.0. not a great start but I reckon that's part of the Xmas / New Year hangover.
How y'all getting on??

A very simple approximation would be power in Watts = m*g*h/t where m is the total mass in kgs, g is acceleration due to gravity ~= 9.81 m/s/s, h is the vertical height gain in metres and t is the time you take to do the climb in seconds.
I think... Can our resident physicist check my calculation - it's a long time since I did this kind of thing !
If I'm right and you plus bike etc weigh 80 kgs, and you ascend 100 m in 400 seconds, that would require a power output of about 200 W. Hmm - sounds plausible!0 -
For those who aren't looking at the Cheshire Cat thread on Sportives & Road Rides, http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopi ... c&start=30
We're looking to organise a ride in February to get some hills in. As many of you are from the North West, you might be interested in joining in.0 -

I'm interested, can't make feb 1st, but am a little worried what sort of pace you guys will set, unless there is scope for a fast & slow group,or a shorter ride for those of us not yet ready for a century by March?0 -
I average around 15mph - around 20-22mph on the flat and sloooooooow on the hills (that's why I have to get rid of that stone and more). We haven't got to the details of pace and stuff. I'm sure that whatever we do we should have a principle that no one gets dropped. When I went out on a club run for the one and only time, I was no where near the pace of the pack so someone stayed at the back with me (my engine wasn't quite right at that time but I didn't know it - I really should try a club run again one time). I think we should do something similar or as you suggest, have a fast group and a slower group?
I think we'll have to start a separate thread as there may be other north west riders who may miss it if it remains hidden within the Cheshire Cat thread. Watch this space - well that space over in sportives :-)0 -
Week 1 update 16stone 5 LB a LOSS of 3LBS and not a good start exercise or eating wise so at least its going the right way.0

I picked up a nasty virus, just prior to leaving New Zealand, this plus 25 hrs on a
plane and now a week off work, all equals a Stone lost in 5 days.
You should try it, who needs diets!!

Nice to see so many people writing what you've been up to so far this week.
Im having a better day after an abysmal start to the week as ive not been able to cycle to work (ice), and for some reason driving to work makes me pig out.
But today the temperature dared to creep above zero so im back on two wheels
It is looking positively tropical on Sunday so i'll hopefully be along to the 40-50 mile wheelers club run. Hope to see some of you there.
