I thought I recognised the routes ! Seriously though guys, you seem obsessed with plotting routes and having everything pre-arranged in advance. Why don't you try exploring a few routes of your own, or join us for a club run and meet some like minded riders who can show you around the Surrey lanes.

In which case thanks for the routes Naz!

The main reason for plotting is that none of us know the area well enough to explore and not get lost! Planning a route gives us an opportunity to learn the area a little better first before just going for it.

I'm tempted to join you guys this Sunday morning as it happens - no plans for the weekend so it looks like I'll be hangover free all weekend! A good opportunity to make the most of it!

Do I need to warn anyone I'm coming, or do I just make myself known to someone when I get there?

    Naz,

I have already come on one of the KW rides. And great fun it was. Its just that we (well, I)prefer a little longer and harder than a club run, but not quite a spew fest - though a couple of us are toying with the idea of doing the Hillngdon winter series, so maybe we do need to start trying harder... As for planning, well I still haven't bothered with loading a route into my 305 - preferring to see where i have been rather than worrying which way to go.

I'd like to be back midday-ish (doesn't matter if it's a bit after), but no idea on pace!

Lol, yeah maybe. I was in no way dissing the sunday club run of KW however.. it really was good fun and did the job great and took me places I hadn't been before. I should probably put my money where my mouth is though, and join KW, which would allow me ride on the wednesday training ride - get eaten alive by Andy Bye et al a few times and then I would know I had been out on a ride...

By the way - bike is fixed. New hanger is on, and a spare hanger now sits in my saddle pack just in case. I am in the process of rescheduling my weekend to leave Saturday free. Is it def 8.30, or 8am? Not that I am keen or anything :D

    Brrrr!

Still, don't mind that. Just hate the rain. 7 1/2 hours of it on L'Etape this year was enough to scar me for life.

NW6 is the far north compaed to the GU postcodes that we will be travelling through, so I am sure it will be at least 0.01 degress warmer owing to the more southerly climes *edit just checked and it will be 2 degress in Dorking eek!*. Joking aside, my new overshoes will definitely be making a first appearance!

SorryPhips yes I forgot that you are coming from Narf Landon on the train - if I am feeling super keen, I might just nip round the park for a quick lap before 8.30, or then again, possibly not

Has our other potentially new attendee, drewfromrisca, confirmed? If so it could be a bumper jaunt - looking forward to it :P

I STILL can't get any routes uploaded to my Garmin so we may need to go by guesswork unless someone knows where they're going?!

I know this thing worked for me... in fact it was the only wasy I got anything to upload, but its a bit more labourious than bikeroutetoaster as you have to write in all your waypoints.

try http://www.marengo-ltd.com/map/ as you can get a 30 day trial membership. You will also need to use GPS babel to upload it to the 305. Good luck - perhaps we should get wilf to navigate (again) though I know the route until we get to Leith Hill but I dont think we are doing that awesome descent into Dorking on the route you posted.

But SUCH a faff!! There MUST be an easier way! It used to work for me and really straighforwardly, but now it doesn't and I just can't work out why...

We can't plan a ride based on ONE descent! There's plenty more at least as good if not better, and ALL over the North Downs! Take the descent from Pitch Hill (south of Shere) into Ewhurst for example! Ok, granted, that particular one wasn't on the '56+Hilly' route, but it's only an extra few miles of detour...:lol:

I have no problem with a 'few extra miles' when I were a lad I used to just get on my bike and ride - for miles and miles out into Kent. So I am up for it for the sake of exploration.

If you do work it out, let me know, as it has started to irritate me and I just dont have the time to work it out for myself.

Hangovers don't count as an excuse - I have proved to myself many times before that nothing clears a hangover better than a good spin

If we did do the 'regular' ride (i.e. Crocknorth, Ranmore, Westhumble, Box hill, Headley etc etc that would leave us relatively fresh to have a good go at Box Hill as Phips sounds pretty keen to set a PB, as am I, who knows, I might not even fall off

I do know that route off by heart now and I am not bored of it, so its no problem with the navigation - could even throw in a little variation on the way back from Headley if required and we would still be back by midday.

  • Have a good ride on Saturday fellas. I'm won't be there - working
James - you're getting way too much mid-week practice so it's looking like I'll be carrying your bidon come the next race
I'm signing up for the Etape Caledonia on Friday so I have another target as well as the sub 55 RPx3 and sub 6 Box Hill.

Thats a shame - see you soon! Do you have to sample product at work, as that could have its compensations. Cant you just bring some fine vintage with you and fit a spitoon to your bike?

Practice out of necessity - over 100 commuting miles this week, though my legs feel leaden today but I think a lot has to do with feeling under the weather for the past couple of days and also sleep deprivation. On-call last weekend was not much fun. Just found out that I have to get to Welwyn Garden city next wednesday - already looked at a cycle route, though of course I would need to get on the proper bike and not the 'resistance trainer' MTB.

If you can do sub 6 up Box Hill, surely you would be sub 53 round RP! Then you would need to buy this as a reward to yourself...http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15056634#15056634 (Tke a look at the picture in the thread - I know Wilf would die of Jealousy, but its not his size  ).
    EDIT..forecast changed to all clear
Yes thats some good news - It would be lovely to cycle on a suny cold crisp DRY day for once, gettting a bit fed up with being soaked and then spending ages shining up the bike, especallly when I have 2 clean up the MTB as well.

Is there any consensus on a route yet or shall we just decide when people arrive on the morning?

I'm easy - prefer to get in Box Hill for sure :) and would like it to be a 80k ish (purely so I still have something left of the day). Sounds like the well known route does that anyway felgen?
Likewise really - as long as we're back at a decent time I'm not too fussed 8)

Rich-Ti, I just downloaded the GPX from bikeroutetoaster then dropped it onto the Garmin in the Courses folder.
Hmmm, and where would I find this 'courses folder'?! Are you using a 305? :?

As most of the onlining routes use google maps I download the kml or kmz file and run it through www.gpsvisualizer.com to convert it into a gpx file that my garmin likes. I then use the track function in place of the routing function and follow the breadcrumb line on the screen. I used to have similar issues getting routes and tracks loaded, as when I downloaded a gpx file directly to my garmin nothing seemed to happen.

Only thing to be aware of when you transfer the gpx file to the gps that it is under 500points otherwise it gets truncated. I use a garmin 60csx (The Brick) but would have thought the process would work just as well on a 305 or 705. Only takes a couple of minutes and hasn't failed me yet.

I hope to join you tomorrow morning, if you don't mind another person to take turns out front - hangover permitting! :?

Ahh, no, sorry, I'm using a 705 :) When I connect it to my Mac I get a drive mounted, and on that drive is a 'Garmin' folder - within which is the Courses folder.

    Does the 305 have mapping?
Not mapping as such - you can't follow a map like you can on the 705  :(

Sounds like another good reason for me to upgrade! :D

Hmm... I am going to look at my 305 again tonight, as I have to say I have never even looked at the attached devices list when I plug it in. I will say I think the waypoint list is capped at only 100 on the 305, so you have to be quite selective or it gets truncated.
