Today in Manchester we have dense FOG and freezing temps, the same as yesterday. :?

I've just checked out next weeks forecast for the Manchester area.

Temps are staying around freezing all week, SNOW is forecast mid-week, and night time temps (with windchill) are set to plummet to minus -10 C , so, I'll get me gloves out then

I tried going out for a ride today.

My bottles froze over, my glasses, gloves, tights, helmet grew ice, and my Ergos were growing icicles.

But the thing that made me turned around home was the steep twisty slimy ice covered lanes combined with frozen brakes - having to fall sideways into a patch of grass because I couldn't actually stop as I was hurtling towards a busy(ish) road was the turning point that actually made me decide to go home. 'Twas a shame as the cold wasn't bothering me and was really sunny once I climbed out of the lowing lying fog.

I'm looking forward to a day out in the lanes tomorrow. I've just put new batteries in my lights, i'd forgotten how bright they are so i'm looking forward to doing the last couple of hours in the dark. Just trying not to think of the numb fingers and toes, and possibly being invisible in the fog :)

  • I left the house to go to work only to find my car frosted over. So I opened the boot and took my bike out. :) Freezing fog on the way home this evening, tomorrow morning's commute should be fun...

Yeah, last night was the first frost I've spotted this year. The mountains regularly get dusted with snow, but being so coastal here, we get it really mild.

Growing up in Llangefni (centre of Anglesey) my school only closed due to snow once. For some reason, David Hughes Comprehensive (in coastal Menai Bridge) would close once or twice a year. Very unfair. :x

    ....................SEVERE WEATHER FORECAST..........................

There's been a severe weather forecast for the Manchester(north west +Scotland) area for tomorrows rush hour.

Snow, sleet , rain + subzero temps resulting in severe problems with ICE.

If you don't have to cycle tomorrow morning .... DONT

  • And that snow and nasty weather's due to continue going south for Wednesday. Could stretch from Cardiganshire to Cambridgeshire.

Looks like it'll bypass North Wales though, so I'll keep on pedalling...

We'll see what the weather brings tonight - if it stays dry'll ride.

Today's bike commute failed in minus 6 in Sth Manchester - the blooming freewheel froze whilst wheeling the bike to the main road - permanently locked in freewheel mode......had left it outside for 45 mins before setting off. Freehub has been removed, greased and refitted tonight !

Eurgh, I've just realised that you said 'warm water', not 'warm weather'. Silly me. :(
  • Got up at 6.45 for my 15 mile commute (Prestwich -> Cheadle) , took one look at the snow ,e-mailled the boss and went straight back to bed!! I think I will be working from home today.

Lucky I have such a good boss and such good remote access :D

  • The streets of London were strangely empty of cycle commuters this morning. Surprising because it was great cycling weather albeit a bit chilly.

haha yep snow this morning :)

very very slippery though but the gritters have done a good job keeping the roads quite clear
  • I live in the Manchester area and neglected to ride in this morning, still took an hour to drive 6 miles though

    And it's still snowing..

In truth i love them both
  • I fell off on the last couple of hundred yards of the commute between where i shower and get to work.

Had to take a detour down a side street and forgot about the ice. WHAM!

Ouch, I hate ice my road bike just cant handle it!! time to invest in a new winter bike me thinks.

Thats the thing that put me off the most, there is no Shower at our work and on days like these you get coated in gritty crap. There are days when a Truckers shower just isnt enough.

Come on biondino, can't you recognise an excuse for a new bike when you see it! Poor chap will be showing this thread to his other half in justification for an early christmas present, and then you chime in with facts and ruin it for him.

I backed out - got in the car - snow covering the roads where I live, main roads didn't look too clever - lots of ice and slush.

Weather has improved though - some snow showers, but not sticking at work - damp.

Forecast to freeze again tonight with further snow, and into Thursday.
