Hi, I'm a bigshot hollywood producer and I'd like to buy the film rights to this thread. One man and his machine, locked together against fate, the elements, and a crushing sense of self-doubt. Kate Winslet is already attached to play Jamey, and we're in talks with Angelina to play the bike.

    Bigshot, you say?

    Hmmm... It's a deal.
  • Kate Winslet riding Angelina Jolie - I'd watch that! :D

Jamie - well done. I was sceptical at the start of this thread but your 50 day total is a testament to how much you have learned. Excellent job.

Cheers, appreciate that. I definitely feel like I've learned loads. At the start of this thread I was the kind of person who took the bike into the shop (Evans) for them to fix a stiff link in the chain, and back then I didn't even know it was called a stiff link I just turned up in the shop and said "my chain's jumping, please can you take a look."

Now I can completely strip down my bike to the frame, rebuild it, service hubs and perhaps most importantly of all build wheels and keep them true (massive thanks to Rob Barker for that - absolute star). I'm actually looking forward to giving my bike a big service once the Spring kicks in properly.

Thu 12 Mar 2009: Did not ride - saddle sore :(
Fri 13 Mar 2009: Did not ride (going out after work).
Sat 14 Mar 2009: Did not ride.
Sun 15 Mar 2009: Did not ride.

Another three-day cycling week this week. Was hoping for at least four days but saddle pain says otherwise. Happy with the 31-mile ride home Monday though, that's the furthest since breaking the arms.

Three days better than me. I was going to ride tomorrow, but the ribs are much sorer today so I don't know any more. There's a nagging part of my brain suggesting I just need to MTFU but I don't want to take any risks!

More importantly, I wonder if I should take my carbon steed to a lbs to check it out after my crash. I rode 17 miles after the accident and it felt absolutely fine but... Can a bike shop really know for sure whether a carbon frame has been compromised?

The answer with carbon frames will usually be "maybe" or "possibly". Unless you can see any external defects, an inspection by a mechanic will be little more than soothsaying anyway.

For some reason, though, the "maybe" attached to crashed carbon frames is given more significance than the "maybe" attached to crashed metal frames. Why? Don't know - there's no particular reason other than "wooooo, carbon". I think its the legacy of the myth that used to abound that you shouldn't make bike parts out of carbon. Previously, you shouldn't have made them out of aluminium.

Isn't it because carbon can invisibly (internally?) delaminate and therefore lose strength/risk failure in a way you can't easily see?
  • Blondie: the tyre-kickers' test for CF is to take a small coin and tap it along the frame. If you have a problem area it will sound different to the surrounding areas - more hollow.

Chances are though that it's fine.

A lot of people, including a lot of LBS employees, seem to think that CF is basically fancy fibre glass held together with spun sugar.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

What makes you think you can spot a fracture within a welded metal joint either? The suspicion of carbon is largely a legacy of unfamiliarity and is inconsistent with attitudes towards other materials, imo. Fear of the unknown - that's what I meant by "wooooo, carbon".

I wish I had the room. Having two of us in a one-bedroom flat with no garden means one bike is the absolute limit.

I know, but having settled into the routine I quite like being able to look back over the log and see when things happened, like three weeks from now when I can't remember what day I got that puncture next to Bishops Park, etc etc.

But I am also fully aware that the rest of you probably don't give a toss about my cycling drudgery. Feel free to completely ignore this thread when it pops up to the top of the forum every few days or so.
