This might be a little pre-emptive, seeing as I haven't ridden home from work yet today, but I'm going to be flat-out with packing as soon as I get home, and now I know how to build wheels and I'm riding on one I made myself (thanks so much Rob) I'm feeling lucky, so...

Tue 04 Nov 2008: Did not ride, but Rob taught me how to build a wheel, which was ace.
Wed 05 Nov 2008: First ride on the new rear wheel, built with my own fair hands, and it's all good. CDWP = 7.

Sun 30 Nov 2008: Having not used the bike for a few weeks and planning to cycle to work tomorrow morning I decided to give it a check-over. The brakes seemed to be rubbing but it wasn't until after about ten minutes of tinkering I realised that the wheel was out of true. One of the spokes on the wheel I built with Rob just before going on holiday had worked itself completely loose despite us doing a bang-up job of building and tensioning it properly. Swapped to the other wheel for now as I don't have a spoke key at the moment. CDWP tally reset.

Is it just me or is it a bit harsh to reset the bike's counter when the problem item was one you built with your own fair hands? Not sure you can blame the bike really...

It's a cyclocross rim with a strong hub and the some of strongest spokes around. It was built perfectly, like you literally couldn't have done it any better. Rob was an expert teacher, we had all the right tools, it was tensioned up as high as possible without the rim buckling and it was as near to perfectly true as it's possible to get a wheel.

And we tested all of the tensions afterwards to make double sure.

And then, after just one ride a spoke completely undoes itself.

So I don't want to sound like I'm boasting but I (thanks to Rob) could not have built that wheel any more perfectly so I really feel that I cannot take responsibility here. Either something's faulty or I was sold products that aren't up to the job I want them to do.
  • THIS POST IS CURSED !! I am not reading this post anymore as I read it Sunday night and whilst waiting at the station yesterday morning my rear inner tube exploded for no apparent reason - co-incidence ?? Continue reading this post at your peril :?

So let's get this straight, if I remember rightly this post was started as a kind of protest against having been given a crapbike from a crapbikeshop.

Now, you build yourself a wheel which almost immediately goes out of true, and this is still the fault of the crapbike/crapbikeshop and at the very least absolutely definitely NOT your faulty at all...despite being the first wheel you have ever built?

Hmmmmm, anyone else see the small issue with this?

If you don't believe that the wheel was built perfectly then fair enough but it was. I doubt Roger Munson himself could have done it better. Ask Rob if you want a second opinion.

Oh no I believe completely that you built your very first wheel 100% perfectly and the reason it failed was absolutely and positively nothing whatsoever to do with the person that built it and without any shadow of a doubt was totally and utterly the fault of one of the parts failing which was more than likely caused by the crapbikeshop in the first place.................................honest!

Wheelbuilding is an art...well done for mastering it so perfectly in your very first attempt

BTW I have two new brand new Velocity Deep Vs that I need lacing up, one 40 hole and one 32, both to vintage Maillord hubs. I'm thinking maybe a twisted spoke pattern on the back....perhaps you would lend me your mad skillz?

There's nothing remotely artistic about tightening up a spoke and then measuring it with a spoke tension meter to see if it's tight enough, then repeating the process 31 more times.

If that's all there is to it then you might as well buy a machine built one then eh?

The difference is the amount of time you spend on stress-relieving and the subsequent re-truing and re-tensioning. Machines and commercial wheelbuilders don't have the luxury of time (at least not if they want to make money) whereas a person building their own wheels can spend as long as they like stressing, retensioning and retruing without worrying about how many other wheels they need to build before teatime in order to pay the mortgage.
  • actually, why cant machines build evenly tensioned wheels? I'd imagine that it'd be not too impossible to make...

Shh - they can, but acknowledging such a fact would put the human builders out of a job...

The wheel was, in fact, built very well indeed by any standards, not just for a first attempt. I have the tension readings here on the Park excel spreadsheet if anyone who has been having a pop wants to have a look. It's well, well within accepted tolerances and he did a great job.

The l problem is that Jamey is a very big lad and uses panniers while commuting, a loading that has proved a bit much for a 32 spoke wheel.

Indeed, the 36-spoker is proving to be fine (sound of thunder, everything bursts into flames) ;)

We're not having a pop at Jamey! (um, I'm not anyway :) ) I just think that for the purposes of his daily tally, anything that goes wrong with the wheel he built himself should be excepted.

    :)

Besides, you wouldn't want me to reach fifty, would you? The fun would all be over.
  • Jamey,

I hate to see you learn by all the problems you have had with your bike but, at least you are interested in learning to fix all the problems you are having. I never thought you would stick to it after the beginning problems you were having. It takes a lot to stick to something and try to master it. My hat is off to you for that. I looked at the early posts and laughed my ass off thinking it was funny. Since you are really trying i can't laugh anymore, other people should also offer words of encouragement rather than give you Sh-- . You may not be the best mechanic but you will get better in time.

    Robbaker,

Thanks for showing Jamey how to lace wheels and giving him the knowledge of how it should be done. It is good to see someone taking the time to help someone rather than spending twice as long criticising them for wanting/trying to learn.

    Littigator,

You better go count the holes on the velocity deep V rims, i don't think they come with 40 holes. I guess you screwed up and really mean velocity DYAD rims with 40 holes. I don't think you could lace a pair of wheels with a twisted spoke pattern even if Jamey showed you how.
