I hate to see you learn by all the problems you have had with your bike but, at least you are interested in learning to fix all the problems you are having. I never thought you would stick to it after the beginning problems you were having. It takes a lot to stick to something and try to master it. My hat is off to you for that. I looked at the early posts and laughed my ass off thinking it was funny. Since you are really trying i can't laugh anymore, other people should also offer words of encouragement rather than give you Sh-- . You may not be the best mechanic but you will get better in time.
Robbaker,
Thanks for showing Jamey how to lace wheels and giving him the knowledge of how it should be done. It is good to see someone taking the time to help someone rather than spending twice as long criticising them for wanting/trying to learn.
Littigator,
You better go count the holes on the velocity deep V rims, i don't think they come with 40 holes. I guess you screwed up and really mean velocity DYAD rims with 40 holes. I don't think you could lace a pair of wheels with a twisted spoke pattern even if Jamey showed you how.
Actually, they go up to 48s in the deep v style!

As for getting them built twisted they'll stay normal as that suits the vintage bike I am building. A 50s Raleigh Superb hence the 40 rear 32 front in its orginal pattern.
I was simply having a bit of fun, but apologies if anyone has taken it a wee bit too seriouslyRoadie FCN: 3

Woohoo! First full (ie five-day) week of cycle commuting since <quick look back at opening post> October... Bloody hell.
Feel good though.0 -

Tue 23 Dec 2008: Did not cycle (dinner with the missus after work).
That's probably it now until after Christmas, unless I get out for a leisure ride tomorrow.
Have a good Christmas everyone.
I would make a comment about how it's nice to finish the year with the CDWP tally in double figures but I'm working between Xmas and New Year and planning to cycle in.0 -
Wed 24 Dec 2008: Off work, did not cycle.
Thu 25 Dec 2008: Xmas day, yay. Did not cycle but cycling-related presents included a spoke tension meter (Park one) and wheel truing stand (not Park one, cheap one)..
Fri 26 Dec 2008: Did not cycle.
Sat 27 Dec 2008: Did not cycle.
Sun 28 Dec 2008: Did not cycle but spent the day fettling. Wheels now as true as is humanly possible although there's a chance I might have overtensioned the rear one a bit as I did it up to 120 Kg of force (1200 Newtons).

Mon 29 Dec 2008: Both journeys fine, but bloody cold. CDWP = 130 -
Tue 30 Dec 2008: Did not cycle, I draw the line at minus five degrees, especially when my back's hurting. Drove to work instead.0

Wed 31 Dec 2008: Both journeys fine, happy new year everyone, I'm really pleased to be finishing 2008 with a working bike and the CDWP in double figures. I've learnt a lot about bike maintenance this year, partly thanks to this forum, partly thanks to shelling out for a course and partly due to Rob Barker, who taught me to build a wheel. Thankls Rob and everyone. CDWP = 140

I know... I'm trying to jinx it every chance I get but it's almost as if bad luck and superstition don't exist and they're just a load of mumbo jumbo or something... Crazy0

Mon 12 Jan 2009: Both journeys fine, although I noticed a squeaking/creaking/scraping sound on the way home. Let's just hope it was the wet roads and it's gone again in the morning. CDWP = 180
