That's 20+ mph for the first 25, nice.

Measure out a 10mile course that's flat as possible with few junctions/no lights, and see what you get. TTing sounds right up your street.

Competitive in a sportive event - surely that is an oxymoron?

Indeed. It's fun to get out and have a blast, but if you want to race, go racing! That's what I say..

I don't think 10 mile TT would be for me....I would need to ride faster than my 25 mile speed...I could have gone faster but I was comfotable and knew I would have to ride back and didn't want to kill myself!
I have now realised that cadence is important as when I lost my rythm at points it was hard to get up to speed again!

You don't want to ride faster than your 25 mile speed? :?:

Do it, ride it as fast you can until you are crying.... That will be a good indicator of how well you are going (which was the point of the thread, no?).

It's useful as a measure of progress.

LOL Infamous....I can always rely on you to put me right...:)

Of course I want to go faster but I don't have the will power to push myself that hard....as soon as the going gets tough I let myself stop....It seems to be more a mental thing than a physical thing....Maybe I need a training buddy...will look up Chris Hoy in the edinburgh phone book... :P
Now that I have done the half century I will do it again ....and again until I get a time that I am happier with....In the next 6 weeks I want to knock 13 minutes off my ride so that I have 1:10 for the first 25 and 1:20 for the second 25..In the 6 weeks after that I think the weather and daylight may deteriorate and I may be confined to the gym again....I do intend to keep up my regime over winter. I am mindful of pushing myself to the point of injury....plus the wife woudn't be too happy coming 25 miles to come and get me if I hurt myself....Lets keep this sensible and set manageable goals...

My main goal next year is to do the London to Brighton....I know I could probably manage it now...but I want to be fast when I do it... I have read that the average time is around 7 hours but I would like to challenge myself to do it in 3 hours or less....It is only an extra 5 miles on what I did this weekend.... There is at least one long hill...only 1km but not sure of the gradient.
Before anyone mentions it....I KNOW IT NOT A RACE!! it's a personal challenge to myself.

BTW...when do we usually start the "goal for next year" thread?

2008 season is pretty much over...

Don't neglect the warm up and warm down sections fuzzy, otherwise yeah just keep at it.

Before the winter gets too bad, I've set myself a challenge to build a base, started with 30km today (though, it was including a 10m TT) I will add 5 km every day and see how long I can keep going.

p.s. Chris Hoy became English when he won all those Gold medals don't you know.

You might find you do better by employing a more even pacing strategy. Of course that assumes the 2nd 25 is equally as difficult/easy as the first.

I think the 2nd 25 is equally as hard as the 1st 25....I do an "out and back" route.....so basically ride the same roads but the opposite direction....I don't do a loop. The route I used was relatively flat....lots of undulation and bends but nothing that I can't push through to maintain speed. The route is coastal so there seemed to be a constant wind in my face in both directions which was slightly off-putting and soul destroying....I thought wind in my face one way would be wind at my back going home....but I don't think that is what mother nature had planned that day!

I understand what you mean by even pacing but I want to get the first 25 down to a decent time and make it manageable...then I can work onmy endurance for the 2nd 25....The one thing I can do next time is go prepared....I only took some orange squash and some water with me for the first ride and had to get the water refilled halfway in a friendly coffee shop (had no cash with me!). I will grab at least one energy gel next time as I was seriously knackered by the time I got home. As I mentioned before I had only intended doing a short blast on the bike but got a bit enthusiastic with the miles ticking by! :)

Seems to work out as 20.5mph for the first 25....16.6mph for the second 25....average of 18.6mph over the 50 miles...

I still have some work to do!
