I'm not sure people go out of their way to ride on it, it's just a major artery east-west
I like it westbound. There's not so many side roads because of the dirty great river in the way. You can get a nice clear run except its often spoiled by all the bleedin cars
I cycled it properly for the first time on Friday, from London Bridge to Wandsworth Bridge. It was great with the sun out. There're plenty of fast stretches to test your legs so I can see why the SCRers here go on about it. Of course, being a non-SCRer, I just pootled along at my own leisurely pace0 -

I thought this to start with, but give it a few more tries. Maybe just the zeal of the converted.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

After meeting a friend for beers in Covent Garden last night, made my home via Trafalgar Square>Whitehall>Embankment>CB>Queenstown>Silverthorne>Clapham Old Town>A24 Dragstrip to Tooting.
Absolutely blasted my way home....the force seemed to be with me....whether that was the tailwind, the ale or the traffic light positive karma....I don't care as it was a great ride.
Very few people about when I headed back at 9.15pm though did pass two roadies alongside Clapham Common. Felt like I passed them at twice their speed...they must have been in pootle mode. Didn't seem fair scalps.
Wish I had more of these "Plot a course for home Mr Sulu. Warp nine. Engage!" commutes!"Come at the king, you best not miss." - Omar, The Wire

To be fair, I wasn't on it for a great stretch - it just seemed to be full of cars, with a couple of slow cyclists scattered throughout.0 -

Maybe, like Narnia, it isn't there if you look for it...0 -
Well done to the HGV driver who managed to avoid killing two roadies who tried to squeeze up the inside as he was indicating left near Blackfriars this morning. I know we shouldn't need to congratulate professional drivers for their skills in not killing cyclists, but it was piss poor riding.0

I think it really does depend on when you hit it and who is on there at the same time. My first crack at the Embankment proper was the same stretch as Kelsen, LB>WB and I had a cracking time. Picked up some rather rapid roadies at Vauxhall Bridge then pretty much had to keep it lit until I turned off at WB! The speed and suicidal filtering was a proper rush :-)
Second run on it was a bit boring as no other competition around :-( Going to start using it whenever I can now as I need to rack up miles......0 -
It's just so much quicker than the stop-start of less "mainstream" roads - fewer junctions, fewer lights and it's wide enough so that passing cars can (generally) give you more room. You can get a genuinely good and long run going on most days.
When it properly clogs up though it can be a pain (particularly west bound) due to parked cars and a lack of lane definition.0 -

Thought you'd been a bit quiet. No way yo can cycle to Paddington, then get the train to Newport or Cardiff then cycle from there? Could sell it to your employer as "I can work on the train". I've tried it with a folder for my site visits in Bristol and it works fairly well aside from getting changed in a train toilet.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

Managed to get the timings on the lights spot on this morning and flew through the first 6 sets on green and got caught on number 7 thankfully as it was starting to hurt. Later in teh ride I unwisely did a bit of ambulance chasing but only lasted 100 yds before we went our seperate ways.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Here's footage of one of my morning commutes last week. It covers the Balham, Clapham, Stockwell drag strip, perhaps one of you is on this?FCN = 40

Couldn't see myself on there, but the red FG/SS looks familiar. What time was this? I normally get on at Tooting Broadway at about 8.30, and follow the same route up to Oval, then turn off at Kennington Road (used to go all the way up to London Bridge, but got fed up of E&C lunatic driving). On the way home, I've been diverting via the Embankment for the last few weeks, and rejoining the drag strip via Queenstown Road. The best of both worlds I think, but a bit out of your way from Canary Wharf.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

I leave home around seven and arrive at work at 8-15/8-20ish so Tooting Broadway is roughly 7-30FCN = 40

Is that why the sky looked so grey and heavy this morning? I thought that was only up north.

I was wondering where it was attached as well. I don't think that was quite what was meant by "Got some helmet cam footage of YOUR commute?". [Apologies if it's a bit early in the morning for that sort of thing]1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

After a considerable period of playing leap frog with some fakenger last night (he was jumping lights), he tried to show me how awesome he was by bursting past me on a clear stretch.
Bless.
One swift manoeuvre around him, and then he seemed to disappear. Weird.

It's a grand tour leader's jersey FFS, how can it not lower your FCN?0
