So slow today - but I guess 2 hours sleep does that. I rode in late today, no SCR to speak of.
  • I’m on a 10yr old Turquoise/Silver Marin bobcat skinny MTB with a rackpack.

Well chapeau to you then for managing 43kmph on 10 year old MTB. I managed 26.4mph this morning going full guns, which I calculate to be 42.5kmph. I wasn't standing up though. You weren't standing up were you? I'm on a 2009 green trek road bike full lycra, clipless so I am ceding a whole batch of points to you. No quarter will be expected or given should we meet but I will say hello if I get the chance.

I'll keep my eye out for you... I am really wondering about the reliability of my computer now I've heard your stat, but 43 is what it said on the console. Although I wasn't properly standing up when I clocked that speed, I think I was beginning to bounce a bit and was in full on chase mode which always makes a difference for me. Today I couldn't even get close to 40 so when we meet it could be interesting... I suspect I might have a chance at catching you if you passed early and I made chase... so make sure you don't pass too slow, or just thunder from the get go at the lights.

Actually found a link to a similar bike to mine http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=23243&g2_serialNumber=2: except i have skinnys and a larger big chain ring on mine. Was my wife's long ago but she discarded it because it was actually too big for her, I was happy to inherit.
Happy to have a second opinion on the FCN of such a bike.
  • Wow just realised that is same as my first proper mtb I ever had, that then subsequently at uni got every part not locked or needed bolt cutters, nicked. I was not a happy man. Mine came with griftshift...

Why does everyone seem to be reporting slow today? I was faster than the last few weeks as it was a bit warmer and I don't go well in cold air.
  • Pchaw - I had no slow down today for sure. Looking very much forward to the race home as my sensor has decided to work again :) BONUS!

ah, that's true actually didn't spot that, mine's got a gripshift too, i'm really having problems finding replacements for the cover of the original twist bit which is nearly worn through.

Are you sure it's the sensor and not the magnet? I had an intermittent fault with one of these thingys and a wheel with a different (and presumably stronger) magnet on made it work purfict.

It started me on the slippery slope to buying the sram that I have now. The rubber grip part? Not sure you can owt but get new kit... Its 10 years old. sram x-7's should do you fine as if memory serves it was 1:1 click on those things... although maybe not.

Not sure tbh will3 - either way it decided to work this morning...

I'm quite glad I'm not riding tomorrow - I just feel a bit fatigued (no days off bike, recovering from cold, flu jab on Tuesday, am big wuss etc.). I have no stories to tell, apart from having someone gob at me for the first time on a cycle path that goes along the east side of Holland Park (the park, rather than the road/locale). On the plus point (if there is a plus point) I think it must have been chewing gum, as I felt it hit my shoulder but when I looked there was no globulous mass or even wet mark.

But what a c***, eh. I had D-lock-related fantasies the rest of the journey.

Nope. I'd just started to go downhill, it was in the middle of nowhere, and he was with two mates (all about 18 I reckoned). At least they didn't push me off, eh.

(also this is in Holland Park, aka the poshest part of the poshest part of W London, wtf)

Careful, the gripshift on those old marin's was paired with shimano derailleurs which is 2:1 pull same as it is now (at least if that bike is setup the same as the one I've got. I think SRAM sell a shimano compatible cable pull grip shift. I upgraded the whole bike to 9spd shimano rapidfire shifters a few years back.

Fun on the way home today. It was early, so quietish - but I still managed to find two quickish guys. I was on a mission as I'd missed the first train, so I had zero slack to get to Wimbledon to collect my car on time; so SCR or no - I was going to have to give to serious stick.

I caned it from the off. On Embankment I came across a pair, bagless, pink capped stylee on a Bianchi (who seemed to do a lot of unneccesary steering when attempting to go in a straight line) and a dude on a really nice tourer with a pair of loaded mini-panniers (front lowrider panniers on his rear rack) who were sparring with each other merrily. Whoever said SCR isn't a great spectator sport!?!

I'd reeled the tourer dude in, but we got to a red ped crossing - he went through, I stopped. Gr. I spun back up to speed and quickly caught him again. It was fun when he looked back and put in a few out of the saddle efforts to fend me off. Passed him before Big Ben and didn't see him again.

Out of PS I passed Bianchi pilot and headed off on my merry way, a look back when passing a bus shows he is nowhere. At VB I *just* didn't make it through on green so had a long wait and Bianchi Stylee catches up. But he comes from behind and goes before green so gets an immediate lead - then he sprints into DSC but after 200m or so pulls off onto the pavement looking quite chuffed with himself. As if! Dude, you're scalped, plain and simple. I had to chuckle.

But no time to waste, I'd picked up another wheelsucking roadie at VB, so I had to open up the taps to keep my scalp (and get to Wimbledon in time). Mission completed on both scores - but it was hard work, and I am still not quite feeling 100%.

    Still fun! :)

Quiet-ish night tonight. Bit of action with a non-backpacked roadie along the NKR after WBR lights. Thin calves too. The racing snake kind. But traffic put paid to the really fun stuff.
