  • Woo!

After having no commute to do since the start of June I'm finaly back in gainful employment and have a fun ride to work - 5 miles of flattish joy then pain. For those in Bris: Portway from the centre to Slyvian Way, then the climb up to Blaize Castle and the Kingsweston Road.

Only MTB's on the way in, but met a few nice roadies on the portway home yesterday; sadly it shows that I've put on 35lb since December last year, and lost stupid amounts of fitness due to illness.. Scalped by every roady I met :(

I think so. Blue shorts with Sportful on the back in white. You know him? He had a small backpack, white carbon Cervelo, RS I would have guessed - though I must admit that in that state of oxygen debt...

I *think* so. I was going to say white Cervelo too. I've seen someone similar at the end of the Lower Richmond Road and then into the Park, where he rides with a couple of fast lads. He's very rapid.

    White = R3.

I left just before 9. Really nice: quiet, mild, and wind assisted. Didn't feel like burying it this evening, so it was ideal.

"Mr. R3, paging Mr R3. Your scalp is ready for collection sir"

Pull up to VB lights this morning, and who should be track standing for display but a guy on a white R3 in Sportful bibs. A-ha.

He rolls into the junction a bit before the green, so he's got about a 25 m rolling headstart. I bury it, head down. Look up just before the Morpeth, and I can see I'll have it. Just as we unwind onto the straight, I pass, with a nice healthy speed differential, and wide to his right. Should have made it tricky for him to grab my wheel. Plus I don't think he was expecting it

Downside was having to push to Lambeth Bridge. Managed to hold 48 into a pretty fierce headwind - saw the pier flag standing to attention pointing the wrong way. Traffic was then snarled to the far side of Pt Sq. He lost in filtering heading to the Sq, then I lost him filtering through the Sq.

    I'll book that one.

:D Did you zip your top up just before the traffic lights out side the Tate and raise your arms aloft?

Taking no chances this morning I don my winter bibs and thermal long sleeve top two pairs of socks and two pairs of gloves plus a little cap, slipped on my fleece jacket and popped my windproof in the bag

to say I was warm would be slightly understating it, by the time I reached the station both thighs were drenched and my little cap pouring from the rim

Still if it hadn't been for the damn headwind / gale it could have been a PB, makes me think just how much time am I loosing everyday on the one or two occassions this year where there's been no wind I've sub 60 could a headwind really account for 5-10 mins?

Toasty warm on the way home tonight :)

Does overtaking in a pedestrianised area count? I don't think it does. This morning I was riding along my normal route, passed a woman on a mountain bike with empty childseat trundling along on the pavement. At each light I stopped at it gave her just enough time to catch up. This continued through a few sets of lights until we reached a pedestrianised area. At this point I obviously dropped my speed to be considerate to the pedestrians, but she saw this moment of weakness and brazenly overtook me, grinning like a cheshire cat thinking she'd claimed my scalp. I'm fairly certain this doesn't count but I had to overtake her back just in case. These injustices can not be overlooked.

    Very nice Sir! :)

The wind was rather nasty this morning, so doubly good going.

The Pig felt like a leaden parachute today, though I suspect it was me rather than the bike. I tried it on with a quick dude on a red Allez along Nine Elms, he was having none of it (though he did sit on my wheel for a long stretch before jumping off, including passing a bus ... fair's fair in love and war).

MTFU after E&C and realised I'd got to the station in a time that I'd have been fairly happy with on the Genesis.

Side effect was nice quiet roads for me once I got past the scene.

Not much wind this morning thankfully.

    Should most defintitely not count.

Like overtaking when the Safety Car's out. Funnily enough I had one of those this morning through Rotherhithe. Ambulance coming from town on the wrong side of the road (my side). Myself and everyone else pull in to allow it though narrow gap between traffic islands and one w@nker takes the opportunity to whiz past. Grrr.

    And a RLJer...

    Bottled today.

Sore legs after Sunday's Circuit of Kent and riding yesterday into work.

Glad I did looking at the weather outside.

To the guy in what looked like yellow DMs and a Trek racer in New Cross last night. Fairplay to you stayed with me until the hammer dropped for a short interval sprint.

Pretty chaotic over by Tottenham Hale area too, policemen aplenty out controlling traffic - although I couldn't see what for.

Got to show off my awesome filtering skills, anyway ;)
  • On the second bit of my commute last night from Swindon I rolled up to a roundabout at Cricklade only to see a Roady in full disco gear about to follow me up the hill. I'm on my touring/commuting bike with panniers masquerading down the food chain and could see the look on his face as he approaches (I'll take him he thinks). Unfortunately for him he didn't realize the humiliation lying in wait. I've got an open 50 at the weekend and should be competitive so I gradually wound it up to TT pace hitting 20mph at the crest of the hill despite my baggage. A check over my shoulder confirms he's trying to get back at me on the decent (he's now 70m or so back as we descend. No worries on this front, once we hit the flat his humiliation will be complete. A sustained 5 miles at 25mph+ does the trick. Sunday should be good..

Police probably out cos all the buses had to get diverted round the Tottenham Hale/Broad Lane one way system. Also they had completely closed off that section of the High Road between Tottenham High Cross & Tesco/Seven Sisters so there was no traffic at all on that section.

I'd managed to get past as although the bus lane was closed off at both ends with Police tape they didn't close off the crossing so I went down the pavement for a bit until I got right up to where the 149 had gone into the building. Then I had to cross over to the other side of the road to where the 243 had mounted the pavement and into the flowerbeds outside CONEL. Then I went back across to the bus lane and continued on my way.

What I can't understand is how the heck the 243 managed to hit the 149 travelling in a separate single lane bus lane segregated from the rest of the traffic going in the opposite direction. :?

D'oh, didn't actually check where where that accident was before posting!
  • First proper scalp yesterday, hairy roadie heading west through Tower Hill, sheer power to take him as we went round the big bus stop with the tower on the left. The new gearing on the SS hybrid doing it's job, it makes the pain of going uphill and the morning's mechanical problems all worth while!
As it's my first, there's a round on me in the Morpeth on Friday!

  • Hurting a little now. I **may** have over exerted myself on the way in. Good headwind this morning, and I was travelling along the coast road near Prestonpans power station, when a Piaggio scooter had the audacity to overtake. It too seemed to be struggling from the headwind, and was only managing about 25 mph, so I turned the cranks and tucked in behind him.

The number of times he checked and double-checked whether I was behind him was astonishing. I certainly didn't have the legs to overtake, but I kept with him (drafting, obviously) for the next mile or so, where he turned off, looking rather embarrassed.

Also had a good long run with a bloke on a single-speed converted Trek road bike. He does a 16 mile commute on a single speed.

Today I was on a tuesday ride with some people from a club, and we set off through york, some guy overtook us which I thought was a silly thing to do as he was shortly going to get owned, he really started thrashing it, abit of a headwind, you could see he was giving it as much as he could, he looks like he was mark cavendish sprinting (allot slower of course), andway the group leader sped up, sat behind him for a while, overtook him, I was debating weather to go ahead, I just held back with the other people, did not want to p155 them off for droping them, and I was rather enjoying the shelter from the wind, anyway I set off doing 26 into this headwind and overtook without much effort. To be fair this commuter which was on a normal road bike did have the added weight disadvantage of a rack on the back. But I thought it was a rather silly thing for him to do, if I see a group in lycra I'm not going to overtake, I'll sit behind them see what pace they are going to do, then overtake if I feel I can sustain a speed without murdering myself. I hope he was embarrased.

Later on at the end of this short ride, about 57 miles in we where met by some chav commuters, one on a BMX and the other on some crappy MTB, they where in the right lane to go round the bend and right, well lights went green, they trashed it thinking they could beat us, so I released a fury of crushing quad power upon their souls lol and accelerated to the 30mph speed limit leaving them for dead as they carelessly cut me and the other riders up whilst posing a risk to drivers aswell. They also did not have lights on too and it was dark.
