  • Met my bearded nemesis this evening, first time he's popped up when I haven't just done 10 miles into a headwind. He normally only arrives when I'm absolutely knackered, but tonight I passed him whilst he was stopped in traffic in Leith. Lights changed and off I went into the lead. I blaze along Seafield road, no sign, I drop down onto Porto prom, there's a nice drop onto a fast flat there, I only managed 53 kph. I'm miles off you guys.

Anyway, he catches up as I'm in the pedestrian area, and we chat for a bit. Turns out he does 8 miles South to North, as opposed to my 12 East to West, which explains why he's ready for me after a long headwind. We get to the main road where I really start to turn the cranks.

28 mph on the flat, sustained for two miles, and he drafted me all the way. I turned left, and he turned right. Honours even I think. I just hope he was as knackered by it as I was.

I'm new to the SCR world.

    My FCN is 9.

All you gits who have been blitzing me (black rockhopper, red t-shirt) up the Jacobs Wells Road this week had better watch out - the skinnies arrive next week and your ass will be mine...

Today for the first time in a while I rode home in anger... work, yes I do actually have a job and today it knawed at me. The ineptitude of the NHS worries me as it's getting worse and I fear for the generations to come.

Anywho, so I rode in anger, on my Kharma and I have to say that it was one of my more faster commutes.

Along Clapham Highroad I bump into my mate Dave (a whippet, I might add) who has just bought a new Ridgeback comfort hybrid, flat pedals. We pull up to Clapham Common and I shout out to him that I'll follow, I let him lead me out and then overtake.

I open the taps a little to ovetake some rapid hybrids, then a little more to get clear of some roadies (scalps) and I here the clicky of his gears. A few more meters up the road and I'm scalping other roadies. I forget myself for a second and give it some proper steam.

"Sh*t" I think "I must have dropped Dave".

I check my right shoulder and glued to my back wheel there he is. He scalped my competition as well! Chapeau!

Gonna take him to Richmond Park (with another mate) over the weekend perhaps let him try one of my bikes and hopefully encourage him to switch to a roadie

I had a good run in with a guy on an orange (or is that burnt umber?) SS tonight. Slightly borader guy in a red and grey top with black DHB lycra shorts. I was waiting at VBL when he came passed and jumped the lights about a second before they changed. A few of us took of after him but he must have been running some serious GI's. I was doing 25 trying to real him in but not denting the gap. Finally the gap started to come down but to be honest I only reall caught up with him thanks to the TLs just before Chelsea bridge, he looked pretty annoyed when he turned around and clocked me. Up to the bridge was a truce but then on the down slope it was all out. He had the jump and opened up a reasonable lead with the pain generators up to 11 I managed to reel him in. Unfortunately thats about all I could manage as he was now holding a steady 28 and I was running on empty. Going for the overtake would have been suicide so I held station a length behind and enjoyed the flow.

I think it had taken its toll though as he was way down on power on the drag away from the Battersea lights, max speed was around 24. Scalping would have been a hollow victory on the short run to Albert bridge and then I turned off at Lotts Road, neither side a true winner. I'll keep an eye out for him as that was some pace to aspire to. Chapeau sir...

He's taken me before, usually with his trademark sucker punch. I'm claiming this one, but, oh god the pain this morning is drastic. Every muscle!

Apparently, it doesn't stop there. I also missed club mates in the Park last night. I'm blaming it on the bad light.

Day off today. I'm going to get some pastries and treat myself and the family to some (more) bits and bobs for the new bike.

DDD - I'll be hitting the Balham drag as I'm working near Victoria, on an early shift so I'm not sure if we'll be able to blaze a trail of awesome, but if you do see weeping roadies you'll know who to blame  Epic report again!

Time and place. I can leave for work early!

Well I'm down to start @ 8:30 near St James choob, so will be leaving the house around 7:40ish to allow for the ride and required cooling off before changing into work gear. I reckon that put me at getting to Balham Waitrose around 8ish :-)

Sounds like your mate certainly has some legs on him, unfortunately I didn't have the same luck with my mate over the weekend - I had already warned him that I can't resist a sprint from the lights in town couldn't resist the chance to chase a white van.......I could only just see him when I backed off the afterburners and did a quick max speed check on the comp: 33.4mph  I rode a bit more respectfully after that with the gaps only really opening up due to my better filtering. He has said tho that he wants me to look at his setup as he's not ridden a roadie before and is constantly on the drops having not realized you can ride on the hoods :-)

I should leave my house about 8am. Will have to make an exception next week and leave earlier and go looking for you post drag strip
Alternatively (and I know this is pretty impossible for you) we could just Man-up and go on our own run on the weekend ala Marlborough (without the bonk and lacking behind).
Sounds like your mate certainly has some legs on him, unfortunately I didn't have the same luck with my mate over the weekend. << Snip >>

Dave, does have the legs on him I was hugely surprised as he isn't one of the "go-fast types" (there is clearly a roadie inside him dying to get out.

I feel proper guitly when I'm riding with mates and forget myself, still 33.4mph, that's some doing! Chapeau!

  • @DDD - There might be a change of plans yet as my whole masterplan for next week could potentially change....
As for your mate I reckon just about every hybrid rider has a roadie inside them, but there is also a little person who yearns to ride off road (well at least on bridleways.......) and in an effort to keep both happy they have plumped for the "jack of all trades" bike.....a few more displays of the speed possible on the road bike should persuade him to join the dark side :-D

As far as the "man-up" idea goes whilst I'd love nothing more then to hop on my bike and disappear for the whole day unfortunately it isn't realy feasible for the foreseeable future, or at least not until 75% of the mini-BJUK's can ride for a good distance ;-)

As for that speed I was most certainly "trying" and the scariest part is I think I'd have to go better then that if I should ever encounter JG in Blackfriars

Scalped a moped this morning, on the Brompton (road bike rear wheel decided to self-destruct last night).

Moped rider was on the phone at the time, I reckon at 20-25mph. Does the scalp still count?

My bottom bracket decided that my sheer power was too much for it this morning and distintergrated in the face of my awesome.

It did it to me at my mental legrange point - Chelsea, as far to get to work as home.

It didn't feel to bad so I decided to press on.

    Mistake.

A mile down the road it's banging and crunching away with the cranks all over the Uber alles den platz.

I had to nurse it here the next seven miles like a Lancaster coming back over the channel with two engines shot away and an unresponsive rudder.

Thank God I wasn't weaing my little bike cap.

I'm about to set off for home and will try and get as far as I can before it packs in completely and prolapses smashed ball bearings all over the road.

    Argh.

GregT, not good at all, in the true War time spirit, have you tried cobbling together a makeshift ball race from of those silver icing balls, they are after all the right colour old chap.

As for this pootling in to save my legs, it seems to be more effort than actualy having a bit of a race. Had to let a couple of roadies filter ahead of me with an "after you", and an embaressed "I'm pootling today" justification this morning.

Something inside of me died at that point I think. Normal service will resume next week.

I'm obviously no bike mechanic, but, umm, wouldn't it have been sensible to get it fixed during the course of today? At a bike shop? That fixes things like that?

I'm pretty sure ball bearings don't heal with time. Unlike hurt feelings. And axe wounds (some, anyway).
