Almost the commute from heaven this morning. From the bottom of Maze Hill just east of Greenwich to Tower Bridge without unclipping. All the lights just seemed to fall perfectly for me :D 8)

But for forgetting that Fleet Street is closed westbound I'd have been well on for a massive PB for the morning commute. As it was I had to follow the diversion with all the busses. Prob half a (slow) mile extra and I was still in at the same time as normal.

Other thing was no proper SCR action, no-one was in my league this morning, even though there were a couple of comparable FCNs knocking about they just couldn't handle my awesome 8)

    So....

How annoyed would you be if you were wearing your smart team jersey and matching team shorts, out on your roadie on your way to work, going at a reasonable pace, when you're overtaken by a girl on a crabby single speed, with 2 panniers and a pair of wheels strapped to the back...

    uphill....

:D I assume he's taking his bike back to the shop right now...

Absolutely...in fact, I have been known to salute it!

Hasn't anybody rode this afternoon? Anyhow, I'm back on two wheels rather than two feet with a new chainset and no garish jersey, just an old Team GT Bicycles poloshirt.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

 It seems all my cycling has had a negative effect on my running speed as I lost the fathers race last sports day :-(

LiT - Excellent work. I'd imagine that chap had a long hard look at himself in the mirror once he got to work.........

Anyhow just a quick(ish.....) update on my day as due to an un-feasibly high workload this is the first chance I've had ALL DAY to read this thread........

Day started out interestingly. I thought I'd try a slight variation on my usual route to take in a nice little incline I have neglected to tackle yet in my area. In hindsight tackling a hill within 0.1 miles of the front door isn't the best way to warm up the legs, still it blew the cobwebs off nicely :-)

Had an excellent run down Gypsy Hill and claimed a nice shiny motorbike scalp  I think he was holding as technically he isn't alowed to do over 30mph and was already pushing just north of that. As I'm not really restricted I MTFU and showed him you didn't need an engine to make fast progress :-D

The next rider of interest was a flat barred roadie, aboard a Kuoto Kharma :-) Just didn't look right with flat bars...........he was dispatched fairly easily and I eventually found a roadie at E&C. No challenge but then I found some SS/FG who proved more fun up towards and over Waterloo Bridge!

Arrived at work thinking I'd made good time and thinking that it was a fast run, the cycle computer showed a 17.1mph average which pretty much confirmed what I'd thought! Seems the earlier start, lack of traffic and a good run of lights had really helped!

Ride home was fairly un-eventful until the final climb, I'd say it was honours even tho as whilst I did pass him he sat on my wheel and looked like he had plenty left in him had he wanted to take the lead again! Of course I did turn off to take an alternative route to the top and he didn't so he might have died after that :-P

I have to say i was pure scalping material as was on road bke and fully lycra'd up....and just tootling along with my mates as wasn't sure were I was going    think we were scalped quite a few times

...next time I shall cycle much faster and compete......even if I dont know where i'm going :D:D surely its better to be fast and lost

    Of course.
Well my route is up Chester Road/ A56 into the city centre, so I doubt we will overlap. And I was a bit too nervous this morning to try anything. I cyclo-commuted to rowing this weekend but the roads are a tad more busy at rush hour!

Hmm. There is no such thing as a pootle. Despite having very heavy legs, had to put some effort in to try and shake a Dynamo DF on a Cervelo. Picked him up going past morpeth, dragged him up to HoP where he got a lesson on why drafting is not such a great idea in traffic: had to quickly shift right to avoid another cyclist who started an overtake without shoulder-checking. Lost the chap through the nightmare that is vicky embankment but blasted past at about 10mph faster through the tunnel (thanks to a lorry draft slingshot)

I literally have tens of Personal messages every day from posters and pester-ers asking me for advice on training issues, personal problems, hassle free loan consolidation offers etc.

Quite why they choose me for this purpose is beyond me as I've never cycled "in a competition", have a basic grasp of fizzyology and am prone to lie and mislead for my own random purposes.

One of the odder questions I get asked is this
Will filling a 9 yard skid with hardcore waste via a wheel barrow over a weekend improve my commuting performance of a Monday morning?

Hardcore waste in this context is hard landscaping material such as bricks and concrete, not hardcore waste in the porn context which, if in sufficient volume to fill a skip is certainly outwith the scope of this note.

It has been one that I have no experience of since my student days of labouring on building sites and therefore one that I gob off about with mad abandon. A little experience ages ago is ample in my book.

"Yes! I implore you spend all weekend hefting lumps of concrete into and out of a barrow in the rain. It is good cross training and will benefit your riding no end."

I have been begging my readers.

However, imagine my surprise when having spent the weekend pished wet through engaged in mano-a-mano grappling concrete blocks, I find myself knackered and wasted.

I would have posted this earlier but have just been staring sullenly at the screen trying to get my depleted energy reserves mustered to type in my name and password.

My hands are wrecked, obviously sitting in my nice office (I may share it with another couple of hundred drone executives) has done nothing to prepare my hands for manual labour and I now look like the worlds worst hand blender test pilot. I thought I was typical of office workers having milky soft hands but was surprised by the rough calloused nature of other Greg66's hands.. Apparently tradesmen "doing some work" for him are often taken by surprise by his leathery digits.

So in conclusion filling skips with concrete may provide significant training value but should not be used as pre-event wind down supercompensation type training as it will knack you.

If you scalp me tonight fine - I don't care and won't remember anyway. Tomorrow is a new day and one that hopefully isn't as crap

Never mind East Europeans, a few people in the SW1 area might be available soon, and will be looking at potential alternative career options - another string to one's bow could come in useful if one were suddenly in need of alternative employment. :)

Problem is that the construction industry has been hit hard too, many builders around here are scratching around for work and finding it tough going. Even the big projects are being put on hold.

Hopefully it will all get back on track in the near future and we can get on with enjoying ourselves without the worry of what maybe around the corner!
