Decent little battle with chap on the single speed Cannondale down chelsea embankment up to Battersea bridge. Give us a shout if you're on here.

For anyone else, if you spot me, I'm riding a single speed focus Mares cx with trp hydros. Not the conventional commuter but it works quite well. Say hi, always keen to make friends.

Nice setup! What gear are you spinning? My plan was to work up to 48/17 but perfectly happy pootling on 48/19 for now.

    Hello rower.

Manky cold headwind on the way in recently.

Nasty looking car/scooter/bike crash by Clapham Common this morning. Someone was distinctly not moving much. Hope they're ok.

On the plus side, tailwinds home. I was toodling at 40 or so between Balham and Bec yesterday, when some cheeky youngster pulled past me. I wasnt having that, so lit the afterburners and left him grovelling. He meekly pulled up behind me at the lights at Bec, quite some time after I had arrived. He had a decent enough trackstand, and good form, so probably a decent rider, but no match for the watts a fat scr devotee can pump out over a few hundred metres, with the almost certain prospect of a breather at some traffic lights. :D
  • Two proper goes the last two evenings, both in Richmond Park.
First, the classic challenger on my tail, overtakes going towards Robin Hood gate, then can't take the pace up Broomfield. A victory.
Then a mini peloton surrounds me going up towards the ballet school. I take the lead across the middle of the park past the burger van, and only one stays with me till ham gate. A draw.
    No words were spoken, obviously.

Is it me you're looking for? Probably not. ;)

The seasons have certainly changed in the kingdom on Southampton this week, autumn/winter commuting kit every morning, leading to bearable but slightly overdressed commutes home mid afternoon.

Not long back from my first 2+ hour ride in over a month, mostly got the layering right for the conditions, was taking things steady which prevented serious "boil in the bag" issues for my torso while my feet were marginally cool despite Woolie Boolies under my DHB Dorica Carbon shoes... But then I often suffer cold feet, time to think once again about overshoes or something like https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Shimano/RW5-Dryshield-SPD-SL-Winter-Road-Shoes/F7YS for £85 in their "spend and save" promo.

I'm running 48/16 which is good for me once I get up to speed. Takes a bit of time from the lights and especially impossible if I stop on a hill but thankfully my commute isn't that hilly.

New forum layout taking a bit of getting used to...............

Had to have a word with 2 tw@ts this morning who seemed to think that last minute sharp swerving around drain covers was a good idea.

hey fellow SCR's, I made it through the forum upgrade albeit using an (old) work email address prolly wasn't the wisest decision I made but I've amended it now.

Was slightly peeved when a GCW hooted me as he passed me on Wednesday evening. It was an angry honk and I couldn't work out why until I realised my rear light had run out of juice. Fortunately i was less than a kilometre from home on a 35 km commute so I got home okay.

Nothing else to report other than it's much colder and wetter since the clocks went back.

Friday evening, riding along the right hand side of blue paint in Tooting, usual slow moving heavy traffic on the road. The bus alongside me slowed down and stopped before a side road, so I instinctively slowed, and stuck out a palm behind me, expecting the bus to have flashed someone to turn right into the side road, but obviously unsighted, because I can't see through a bus!

Bloke behind me just sailed on through on my inside and went straight over the wing of the right turning car I had anticipated. All seemed ok, and I left my phone number as I was in a hurry to collect my daughter from after school club. Not heard anything over the weekend.

Shit infrastructure? Inattentive bus and car driver? Poor cycling in heavy traffic? All three?

As you said, you only expected the bus to have flashed someone, they may have not done so, so i don't think you can blame them.

The driver turning right should definitely have checked it was clear, but even so they may have seen you had stopped and therefore assumed it was ok.

The cyclist behind though was clearly a numpty for a) ignoring your hand signal and b) not recognising the risk. You have to consider a car is turning right if any of the vehicles have stopped, leaving a gap where there is a turning.

I've been that person flying over the bonnet of the car when a bus stopped and left a gap. The bus driver did not flash the driver through in my incident.

I mainly blamed bad driving by the car driver, and mentally noted that I should more actively anticipate bad driving in that situation. I don't think the cyclist is in the wrong, but clearly could have avoided it in the same way you did.

In these potential left/right hook situations. I always maintain it's better to be "wrong" and alive rather than "right" and picking your teeth up off the tarmac (or worse).

It's experience really. If you're a new or even newish cyclist, you might think an empty bus lane alongside a line of stationary traffic, or a few feet of blue paint means that you can whizz along without a care in the world, or that the existence of an advance stop zone means you have a right to get into it by any means necessary, or that just because you can ride at 45 kph while 12 inches away from the rear end of a motor vehicle means that you should.

  • It sounds stupid, but as a new cyclist, I don't think I really appreciated how much it would hurt to get hit by a car, even when there were no serious injuries. Unsurprisingly, it's something to be avoided.

yes, i've done it a few times over twelve years of cycle commuting. you think a 14 stone male might make a bit of a dent but rarely does that happen. the cyclist always comes off worst..

Walton and Chertsey Bridges offer quite enough excitement for me; no way I'm riding over/under any of the under/overpasses mentioned above!

I think I used the Limehouse Tunnel when I last rode out that way, back in 2010 or so.

I think I'll start with the bike lane, but I can't see myself liking it much.

    Cheers, all.

CJ didn't get where he is today by seeing himself like it much

I too can confirm running into the side of a car that's turned in front of you hurts - even at a relatively low speed.

Similar circumstances for me, although the car turning right was also cutting the corner and essentially went through a gap that lined up with the far side of the side road.

In terms of who is wrong, legally speaking it is the driver. The cyclist isn't in the "wrong" as such, but they could be more in the "right" by riding more cautiously like hopkinb did.
  • I think the general rule is that if you're not switched on in Tooting, you'll be hit by a car.

If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

my 10 years cycling in London has improved my driver anticipation "spidey sense" many times over, when i'm in the car i look at other drivers the way i did as a cyclist, most of the time i can predict the stupidity about to follow.

Ditto Streatham. Traffic generally flows so slowly through Brixton that you're only getting hit there at slow speed so generally easier to avoid. Tooting and Streatham tho... Yikes. The onky comparable place I can think of up here is the A6 between Little Hulton and Swinton on the way into Manchester. The Strava segment is called 'Retard Alley' for a reason...

Amen to that brother, last night was a particularly fine example of Tooting driving standards; pulling out of junctions without looking, the #tootingshuffle, turning without indicating, squeezing cyclists into the kerb. It had it all.

There's a reason all SCR bets are off on the Bec to Broadway section in the evening,.

Yeah, me too - only problem is that last night my wife was driving and I pointed out to her that the bus was about to pull out even though it wasn't indicating (my spidey senses were right, of course)...........all I got was "DO YOU WANT ME TO PULL OVER AND LET YOU DRIVE ???????"

Very tempting to answer "Yes", but I somehow stopped myself from doing so.

Aye, 20 plus years London riding for me and spidey senses always on. Best bet is just to assume you are invisible to all, especially at night, in the rain, when you probably are. For example last night on Embankment a guy riding in all black with a rear light on helmet.. but it was obscured by his rucksack so he was totally invisible in the unlit areas.

The 'right-turning vehicle across a queue of traffic' was the reason I got disc brakes a couple of years ago - in the rain at night near Parsons Green - I slid into the side of the van, dented it with my head and shoulder.. looked at the driver, he apologised so I carried on riding home!

  • Anyone know what time kingston gate is opening during the cull presently? Appreciate signage suggests 0730, but previous years has been earlier.
Tried the new cycle path on kingston hill Toward A3 last two mornings. Death trap at 0630. Standing water, wet leaves everywhere, poor design in parts.
    No likey.
