Here you go, this is the location although it was obviously dark at the time. I'm about to turn left and am 'wheels rolling' in the position of the black line. Car approaches from the road on the left and cuts the corner massively taking me out

I was taken out on the way home last night, Tuesday.

Successfully negotiated Canary Wharf, Embankment, Stockwell and the rest of CS7 and got hit 100 metres from my house in a quiet residential area.

I was in a side road getting to the junction to turn left when some guy in a white Ford Focus approaches from the right on the road I'm about to turn into and cuts the corner massively into my road. He must have been doing about 25 mph.

I mean his whole car was on my side of the road and even though I was only a metre away from the curb he hit me.

Fortunately his bonnet missed me so it wasn't a head on collision but as he continued to turn in I took a really hard hit on my right forearm and a lighter hit on my right leg from his wing.

Anyone who knows me outside of the internet will know I am usually very calm in these situations but I was screaming you faaaccckiincaaaant at the top of my voice at him as I picked myself up and walked towards his car as adrenaline courses through my body.

We exchanged details and he was very apologetic but I don't feckken care, this could easily have killed me if he had hit me slightly differently. I'm not letting this one lie.

My right forearm immediately swelled right up and I was convinced both bones were broken having had a similar feeling with my left wrist in July.

I spent five hours in A&E mostly sitting around and not leaving until 01:30 Wednesday morning but amazingly and thankfully nothing was broken, just badly bruised.

I'm off to the police tomorrow.

Feck that is bad driving, its oddly that some "quiet" roads i find more worrying, there is a mini roundabout on my route that I hate, as folks just drive straight over.

Bloody Nora MTB. Glad you're not worse off, hope the bruises go down quick, and the police charge the idiot. :(

thanks all. I had my GoPro on the front but i wasn't actually recording. I don't record all my rides, I'm not a 'just in case' user, more for the fun edits shared previously.

I literally was 100 metres from my front door so even if I was a 'for insurance purposes' user probably would have turned it off anyway

As an "insurance purposes" user, I've been caught out a number of times because I've not turned them on in the estate, or they've run out of juice before I've got into the estate, only to have an close call incident in that zone - and then nothing for the rest of the journey.

I think people in some residential areas get used to the low traffic nature of the estates and drive like idiots because of it, especially in the "not far now, I need a wee" type event, so instead I do now just turn cameras on the moment I get on the bike, and off when I get off, and recommend everyone else does the same :(

  • Seeing that junction, he had clear sight of you across the pavement so zero excuse. I have my normal doubts about the police but hopefully at minimum it nails his insurance premiums for the next few years. This just adds to my suspicion of the driving capabilities of anyone driving a white motor.
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

    The old a-pillar blind spot.

Wasn't until I drove in america that I noticed just how obstructed you are by the pillars. Driving in the opposite seat made you appreciate just how much it blocks where you'd normally be able to see.

Still no excuse for cutting the corner mind.

Nope, not heard that as an excuse for driving into the white light before.

To be fair, traffic islands don't move very fast, and from the description of the incident it sounds like MTB rode into his wing. That said, anyone who can't tell the difference between a cyclist and a traffic island should, at the very least, stop until they figure out which it is!

I nearly got taken out by a Chelsea tractor doing the same thing last week; I reckon there was a gap of about 6" between it and the (wrong) kerb. Luckily I wasn't quite there when it happened. Seems to be a very common problem; people either don't know how to drive round corners properly, or just can't be bothered...

Pillar blind spots - I've realised I move my head around a lot when driving round town, specifically to see round the pillars.

    Glad you're OK(ish) - heal quickly!

Really bloody annoying loud tick developed on my bike this evening. Started probably halfway home, on every pedal revolution when I’m putting the pressure on (no sound when I am soft pedalling) and appears to be mainly when the left pedal is on the way down. Just had a look, can’t see anything obviously wrong.

    Bloody hate noisy bikes.

Glad it’s not worse MTB, I’ve noticed corner cutting seems worse recently. You’d think Chelsea tractors would all have power steering but it seems the drivers are often incapable of turning the wheel far enough to turn a corner properly so have to cut them.

Sometimes helps to work from the outside to the inside.

Take the pedal off and re-grease the thread of the pedal and crank arm; and oil in the pedal.

Try that, then if still creaking, check the BB.

Other options could be to take the wheels out and clean the drop-outs.

Currently in Paris. Not seen anything which would inspire me to commute by bike in this traffic, and with this quality of driving...

I'm absolutely not saying it was your fault; it sounded like he pulled across right in front of you. From a basic mechanics point of view though: if, as you describe, the impact was between you and the car's wing, and he drove into you, he must have been going sideways. To put it another way, if you'd been stationary, in whatever location he first "thought he saw a traffic island", would he have hit you?

I hopefully don't posess the advanced ineptitude I see in many Chelsea tractor drivers, but I'm struggling to see a way to drive into anything (assuming I'm in a forward gear) and hit it with anything other than the front of my car...

I thought about taking that methodical approach...............

Then decided I couldn't be arsed so sprayed a load of lube around the crank and bottom bracket, and after 5 mins of riding in the rain this morning the noise had gone. No doubt it will come back this evening but then I'll have all weekend to muck about with it.

Of course, the next step will be to whack it with a hammer, because everyone with any mechanical understanding knows that fixes all problems.

I get this sometimes. Its a slightly loose crack bolt on mine that once tightened again makes everything quiet.

Last night was a grim ride home. Cracked about two thirds of the way in because I hadnt eaten enough during the day. RP and beyond was a blur!!

I have this. Have changed the BB & headset, cleaned the dropouts and regreased the pedals, but no dice.

Only solution seems to be to set fire to the bike and buy a new one
  • @MTB-Idle What a difference a week makes. It was this time last week we were chatting happily as by chance we met up on CS7. Then you do a fab video, then a nasty bump. Hope you get more luck next year.

Flyby tells me I spent most of Embankment to Putney Bridge with London-Red and Hot Spanners. Evening chaps.

In other news, bike fits are important.

Glad you're all (relatively) OK MTB. it is amazing the level of incompetence in general. Experienced both on 2 and 4 wheels
