You're goosed after keeping up with my pace yesterday morning.

    That'll be it!

Also I forgot that I rode home last night with some guy pushing really quite a big fixed gear. Wearing some strange light blue shorts that look quite retro. Pannier. Bullhorn handlebars. One of those funny TT saddles. Even at 45 kph+, he was grinding away at a low cadence, so must have been a monstrous gear to get moving in. Even so, he was slippery through traffic. He also kindly pointed out my rear light wasn't on.
  • I on the other hand enjoy riding quickly in the rain, although I do have the occasional moment of panic when the brakes take a second to grip. Completely unprepared at the moment with no guards & no attempt at waterproofing my feet so I was nicely soaked when I got in. I am aware of the anti-social nature of spray for cyclists behind but luckily, nobody seems to hang around on my tail long enough for it to be an issue 8)

(just you lot wait till I get my elec assist cargo bike...)

    Any ideas which one?

I've been looking, but think I'll take a Gazelle Cabby for a test ride first. No e-assist but it only weighs 38kg so not really required - that's very light for a cargo bike! And as a result it costs £1,500 rather than ££££££££££££ like most of the heavyweights.

Not sure about a bike without disc brakes, though! I want to take it to the Swain's Lane hill climb one year and I'm not sure how roller brakes will cope with getting back down afterwards...

Sure, if memory serves, all the lights from the roundabout on Lower Richmond Road to Putney Bridge. Plus lights and ped crossing @ Parsons Green. Plus various bits of unnecesary shoaling and stopping for but going way early from a red light.

Glad I'm not the only one looking at these... Absolutely love them, but the left leg needed to pay for one is definitely a little off putting...

Apparent you can upgrade the brakes on the Cabby to a better roller brake + compressionless cables to get "reasonable" stopping performance.

Might be good enough as I don't fancy hauling 38kg + 25kg child + 25kg shopping up many hills anyway.

    Ha!

In other news, what the heck was up with the traffic tonight?! Embankment could be explained by the lights after BB, but the NKR seemed be shafted all the way down Wandsworth Bridge Road; the NKR, Putney Bridge and Putney High Street all rogered; Bolan Death Crash Bridge, URR, Roehampton Lane, Priory Lane all gridlocked.

Something bad happen on the A3??!!!

According to Rhodrich, burst water main on A3 caused Tibbet's Corner to be closed. Worst traffic in all my 30 years of commuting that route. Amazing that it causes the whole of SW Greater London traffic to freeze up.

I too used the Priory cycle lane Park-bound for the first time ever, and the RELEASE once in the Park OMG!!!

    Yep, that would do it.

I used the cycle lane, too. Can only recall needing to use it once before for traffic reasons, but having to duck down Roehampton Gate was a new one.

Set a new PB down Roehampton Gate. Let's ignore that its only the second time I've been down there.

  • Interesting week last week - injured ankle meant I've been on flat pedals (looks great on an aero road bike), and I'm sure it changed people's attitude towards me:
    - More attempts to re-overtake by people on clipless pedals, obviously feeling sleighted by someone in trainers overtaking, which results in some fairly hairy passes when they haven't been able to manage it
    - A lower perception of my cycling ability from a couple of MAMILs - maybe they were just angry people... but best example when I shoulder checked to overtake coming on to London Bridge, was clear, moved out, then the person in front also swerved out so I had to move a bit further - some pro was flying up the outside and I got a "Watch where you're going...pr*ck", despite them having plenty of space and time to react. It's funny because I feel if I had been in more appropriate garb it would have been less aggressive as the situation definitely didn't warrant that reaction.

My take-away point is a reminder not to judge people's ability based on their attire. And also not to be a d*ck when making people aware of my presence.

Love the guys in full camo gear, seems a little bit much to me. The deer in the park are used to cyclists bombing past in bight lycra and most of the time just don't give a toss. The photographers could probably wear bright orange and still get close enough to take their shot.

Rower, were you sporting a glass bottle of beer in you back pocket this morning? Need a little pick me up when you get to the office?!

Yes. All the more so because deer eyesight is not very good, they get more spooked when they sort of sense there's someone around but can't see them properly, than when they can see them in plain view.

Haha well spotted, I did wonder if anyone would mention it, I was surprised nobody did on the ride itself! A work-mate's birthday, and he likes his wheat beer so I brought an unusual one in for him (Hacker-Pschorr).

I'm still getting back gently into this cycling lark post-broken wrist. This morning was my first cycle-commute this week and only my second since the first week of July.

One of the features of my commute is the ramp up to Westferry Circus. it's a bit like Balham Hill in that it's not a hill at all but it certainly sorts out the men from the boys.

I'm normally fine on it but I was feeling the lack of miles in my legs this morning and got smoked by a guy on a Boris bike who was wearing jeans; oh the shame.

In my defence he looked like a whole generation younger than me and also managed to get a draft off the bus that was ahead of him whilst I was slow off the lights and missed the tow but even so I was gutted.

It only got worse mid-morning when same bloke on a Boris bike Whatsapp'd me. It turns out he is a mate who works at my office. Well now at least I can confirm he is indeed 25 years younger than me and also puts out about 1000w in a sprint but man, it still stings...

Thing with a bozza is, the gearing is so low that on the flat/down-hill it's hard to keep up with competent traffic because you have to spin up the cadence so much. On a hill, all of a sudden you can be competitive, I like to light up London Bridge on one once in a while going North.

Congrats to the guy in a bright orange Rapha top that performed one of the worst trackstands ever this evening. I was immediately behind him on the segregated cycle lane approaching HofP when after about 5 secs of a track stand he just fell sideways and crashed to the floor. Was most bizarre, he looked suitably embarrassed and tried to blame it on his cleats.

Felt slightly emabarrased by someone this morning - waiting at a set of lights, and someone who knew my name but I didn't know his said hi..
Followed by them blasting away like a rocket as I tried to spin up; I blame the marathon spiked tyres and the 4 litres of fizzy pop I had in the panniers - still, I gave chase, but gave up after about 300 meters as they were just a speck in the distance at that point...

Still, their FCN of 4 compared to mine of 10 (And that's counting spiked tyres as knobblies)

PS - Whats' happened to the official FCN calculator site itsnotarace.org? It's gone ...

I was "tailgated" and then close passed through a pinch point while travelling at 48-50 kph this morning. I was taking the road at Oval as the flow of traffic while I filtered put me in that position. I can move at the speed limit for long enough for that not to be an issue for me or other road users. However, someone thought it a bright idea to sit a foot off my rear wheel, and then overtake a foot from my bars where the road narrows due to street furniture separating the traffic left turn lane and the traffic straight on lane.

Obviously, as usual, there was a long queue of traffic heading towards Kennington and E&C about 30 metres ahead of where I was overtaken.

I'm afraid that I smashed his passenger-side wing mirror off and rode off up the bus lane while he beeped impotently at me. I expect all that is going to do is further cement his d1ckish driving around cyclists, and for that I apologise. Unfortunately I don't have a rear camera, and I think my front camera ran out of battery earlier in the ride, so I don't think I have a record of it, though I'll see what's on the card later.

Why is it so hard for some people to not drive like utter @rseholes? I suppose this should be in rants.

I genuinely spat some coffee out when I read that.
I also admit I've done the same when a woman drove up to me whilst stationary at a red light, and pushed me out of the way with her car, taking skin off my hand in the process ( "WTF d'you think you're doing?" "you should be in the cycle lane").
