First commute after the workation, a bit late to deal with car issues. No roadie in sight and, therefore, no SCR to mention. Maybe the ride back will bring some action...

Bottom bracket broke this morning, ended up embarrassingly asking a woman on an ebike for a tow.

Not impressed as it only got fixed a few weeks ago. Virtually every repair that shop has done for me lately has gone wrong in some way - though I do wonder if I got some degreaser in it while doing the chain over the weekend.

How does a BB break so catastrophically that you can't even ride the bike anymore?!

It went pretty quickly. The bike was just ridable, but the whole mechanism basically jammed every few turns. I think it may have been my fault with the degreasing though. They replaced the whole bracket yesterday, can't remember exactly what they said was wrong as I'm still a little ignorant of exactly how they work. Thankfully, much like when I owned a Herald, people are way more happy to help when you're on something retro.

Absolutely smashed it today, sub-2:20 for the commute in for (the first time I think) and will easily top the 200 miles of commuting in a week by this evening which is a record as well.

Not many people going into London today but a lot out in on the roads in Surrey. Saw quite a few Paceline riders heading out through Ockham, do they have a group ride on Friday mornings?

"interesting" accident at Oval last night. Audi embedded in the wall at 90 degrees across the bike lane going north. Still cant fathom how it got there. Audi and wall both totally wreaked.

Also chapeau to the guy on the penny farthing I saw commuting on Wednesday night. Legend.

Saw that yesterday too. Lots of police cars on the scene when I went past. There also appeared to be a van a bit further on with front damage so not sure how that happened either.

^Would it be wrong of me to hope that it was the nutter in the black Audi who made a tw@ of himself in Stockwell earlier on the month?

No, but I think it unlikely as the police caught him and the car was stolen.

He'll probably get a bigger sentence for the two counts of burglary. Hope they can get him locked up as a driving ban clearly wouldn't keep him off the road.

I think for the motoring offences he gets a hug from the judge while the CPS buy him a lovely cake to say well done.

Did some calculations earlier and found out my current commute is 13 miles each way, with 656ft of climbing coming in and 1010ft going home. For some reason having one of them with 4 digits made me inexplicably happy :D

Also had an odd moment with a person in a Mini who kept closing the gap on the left as they were in stop start. Ended up just veering to the right to pass them. Seemed deliberate, but wasn't in the mood to remonstrate.

First day back in the saddle after 2 weeks of hols. Roads were so quiet, very slight tailwind, what's not to like ?!?!?!
  • Nice and quick even with a stop to fix a rattling mud guard. Glad I tool the crap offroad path south of Raynes Park given the cyclist who kept in the carriageway was then having to ask for more space from some lemon is a Fiesta once we got to the lights.

I was directly behind you at Oval when you got off at the lights to fix your mudguard. Was going to say hello as thought I recognised the Belgian champs jersey but didnt recognise your bike so defaulted to being British and completely ignored you!

How much stuff can you fit in that frame bag?!

You should have, seemed a faff but the screw that holds the bottom was nearly full out and not sure i'd have easily found a replacement. Today in the bag we had:
    Pants
    Socks
    Shirt
Neatly folded a rolled suit jackset
    A watch

All along with the usual pump, two tubes, multitool, phone, wallet and pair of gloves for when fixing the bike (forgot to be deployed today)

I can get things like a laptop in it, shoes are a pain but for the regular stuff it works a treat so is used 95% of the time and I have a rucsack under my desk or one of those drawstring shopping bag type things for when I need carry extra.

Tempting piece of kit. The fact you can fit in a suit jacket is the winner for me. I can never seem to coordinate the right suit jacket being in the same place as the right trousers.

Slower than a slow thing this morning, no competition thankfully.

You don't think he's actually in custody for those trivial offences do you? Charged and then back out on the streets pending a court appearance.

SURELY what amounts to a filmed attempted murder should at least be enough to hold the guy in a cell? Insane.

Traffic was shocking this morning. Wanted to drop the Raleigh Competition at the bike shop for a custom build but couldn't even get out the bottom of my road. Ended up ditching the car and riding the rest. Also passed an impressive guy yesterday doing the long climb on a single speed at crazy low cadence - just as I was feeling all happy about my commute

One reason I moved a bit further out -- 30 mins to get to the end of my road in Tooting on the weekend was doing my nut. Not that it's perfect now, mind...

Must have missed the memo that it was the million lumen wednesday evening commute.....just why in broad day light???? Nice autumnal chill in the air this morning when I left. Got left hooked hard on southwark bridge road by the vodaphone office by a guy in a van who decided he wanted to turn almost as he went past where he wanted to go! Managed to keep it rubber side down with a few mm to spare thankfully.

Given oil is not soluble in water, how is it that a wet commute seems to strip all the oil out of my chain?

I thought I'd found a lube I liked, clean and quiet although it washed off too easily in the rain. It was a trade off I was prepared to accept. I've been doing more miles over the last few weeks and it won't last a week even in the dry. Need to use something longer lasting. Back to wet lube and put up with the dirt?

For the last few years I've been using a Halfords Gear Oil mixed with some essential oil to mask the smell (Peppermint has worked best), and I've been very happy with the results.
Recently I found a bottle of Somethingorother Wet Lube and thought I might as well use that up, and used it for my latest (weekly-fortnightly) drive-chain clean. Yesterday morning's 19 miles in the rain completely washed it away and dried the chain up. And it's called Wet Lube!

I don't know what essential oils are, but the squeaking noise that accompanied me all the way to the office morning seems reasonable evidence that some form of oil is essential.

Finish Line wet lube normally seems to work well for me; I think the underlying issue yesterday was that I hadn't re-oiled the chain for several months. Still don't understand how it gets washed off by mere water though! As an aside, once you have a squeaky chain you can spray water on it to make the noise stop. It presumably provides some lubrication too, but it dries out quite rapidly...

I use White Lightning Wet Ride on the 'bad weather' bike. Applied some a few weeks ago, after Ride London (where one application lasted fine) hadn't reapplied before yesterday's commute, admittedly it hadn't been used all that much. Even after the sodden 22 miles in the morning it was still fine.

It's nowhere near as viscous as something like Finish Line Cross Country, which just attracts all the crap.
