I slowed for a ped crossing near the House of Lords last night and was suddenly greeted with "sorry! sorry!" as a rider behind me didn't stop in time and rear-ended me. grrr. He had a bike and clothes to know better. Luckily he missed my RD so no re-indexing to do.

This morning, with the NE headwind, on the open bits (Embankment & Blackfriars segregate) whenever I shoulder-checked all I could see was a mass of nodding heads piled up behind me.

Ive had that happen multiple times at that crossing.

While doing about 30 km/h on the Roseburn path I was caught, drafted, and then passed by a guy in a fat bike. I don't know how that happened. Especially since my segment time (3:00) isn't far off the best today (2:55). Being passed by a roadie is one thing, but a fat bike...

    Speechless.

    Can you get e-fat bikes?

I got passed by a guy on a carrera mtb today. Telltale massive hub at the back and suitcase of a battery taking up the entire front triangle of the bike. When I caught up with him, whilst I was huffing and puffing, I asked him how fast it would go, he reckons 50 mph. It's basically a motorbike, but looks like and has the brakes of a halfords bso. No helmet.

He slowed down a bit to give me a draft after this, but I couldn't sustain 30mph for long, the elastic snapped and he whizzed off.

Did I pass you on your way to the station? I saw someone walking a dog looking like they were heading to work, struck me as unusual At the time.

Quite possibly, I was walking to the station at about 7.10am

Gave a guy from work a tow home this evening, I was being nice so soft pedalled a fair bit and waited for him at the main junctions etc. Poor bloke texted me after he got home to say at one point he thought his chest was going to explode !!!!!

He’s from Montana, has been in London 6 months, wants me to take him for a ride to the Surrey Hills. Might suggest he gets a couple more months of commuting under his belt before we do it.

My wife has had someone smash the derailleur before now.

Thus far I’ve only had folks tap my rear tyre, I’m not much of a fan of drafters for that reason, Club run etc fine. But not on way to work. The other thing I note is even with space most roadies don’t leave space.

Good bit of racing on the Raleigh this morning. Got passed by a roadie while I was taking it easy on a shared path, and as we turned the corner that was sheltering us he couldn't handle the headwind and quickly burned out. I put the hammer down and re-passed him, and heard him grunt and get in my tow. Sadly it was too blustery to break the elastic and then he went another route. Also had some back and forth with an ebike, who I passed when he seemed to have it on a lower power setting. He cranked it up and came back past, and we had some back and forth through multiple sets of lights before he turned off. Seemed a pretty embarrassing effort for a moped, and I'm not really sure what he was trying to prove.

Also passed 3 guys stopped with punctures, which was odd.

Spotted this guy this morning as well. I have an instant dislike for these people as:
    a) they usually don't have a clue about riding around others at the sort of speeds it grants them
    b) it's hugely illegal and will generate massive negative coverage for the rest of us when the inevitable happens
    c) As they're rocking 500W or even 1000W motors I can't really benefit from a tow

No surprise that he jumped through a pedestrian crossing either.
  • Twice had my rear guard clipped by idiots this morning, one apologetic with massive panniers trying to get around me at Oval, I did ask if he was then going to need squeeze back in to make the bike lane.

Else some d1ck pulled out on my into traffic given he had an age to see me and judge what he was doing, quelle surprise he was on his phone. So a usual commute.

I'm not a fan of any kind of regulation of ebikes as I think as many people as possible should be encouraged to take them up.

Guys like that are going to result in a massive crackdown (that'll affect both legal and illegal users) as soon as the Daily Mail finds out about an accident involving one.

Filtering through traffic between the Priory Lane lights and the big Barnes/Rosslyn Park junction this morning, someone on the pavement shouted “Magnus Hi!”. I turned to see it was a former member of my rowing club, now a national team coach, attending to a cyclist. I stopped to say Hi and asked whether I could help out at all, but no there was already lots of help, I think they were awaiting an ambulance. It turned out a cyclist had rear-ended a vehicle and cut his face up, lost teeth etc. This would have been around 0800.

Talking of such, some suited halfwit on an e-bike was tailgating cars in the high 20s (and hopping onto the pavement when the lights didn't suit him) between Streatham and Oval this morning. He'll be picking bits of rear windscreen out of his face before long if he rides like that.

The law in NZ is a limit of 300W before you need licensing, with no speed regulation. To me that seems far more sensible than a prohibitive speed-cap.

The problem with that is that you suddenly have inexperienced cyclists able to reach tour-de-france speeds with negligible effort. Awhile ago I saw a guy on a shared path steaming at 25mph+, barely slowing for women pushing prams. Wanted to give him a piece of my mind, but of course I couldn't quite catch him.

Congrats to the lazy twunt wheelsucking fairy that sat on my back wheel all the way from Kingston Gate to Putney Bridge, never once making the slightest move to take on some of the work.I actually don't mind someone wheelsucking, we've all been dying on a bike at some stage and sought salvation behind someone else, but at some point either make an effort to do some of the work or as a bare minimum give some thanks. To do neither is pretty poor.

Apology accepted. I am rather pedantic about that Oval junction, I usual get animal went in two by two for the rest of the commute.

Else, Trainw4nkering it today, a new queuing arrangement for the Waterloo & City line, I did tap the lady on the shoulder who cut in front of me jumping the queue, i've not had someone then try and avoid eye contact so hard in a long time. Else, any tips for chasing a tenant who owes rent, has left your house a tip and not paid any water bills? just taking the deposit seems a bit simple.

Better rear end a car than you getting rear ended by one. Speaking from experience.

Possible to sue? Clearly a breach of contract. Correct me if I am wrong, but the deposit cannot be used to cover rent.

Edit: Okay, not that it cannot, but best is practice is not to.

On the flip side if the deposit covers it all, why bother chase?

You really need a speed regulation though. 300W can get you into the mid 20s on the flats and bearing in mind that the rider can also add their own power, say a chilled 100W, then they can really get quite fast.

Personally, I think 250W is probably a good limit. I can do that for a long time and obviously peak higher for shorter periods which means a "normal" person can turn into a fairly decent SCR (if I do say so myself). I'd make the speed cap 20mph though and align it with city wide 20mph limits. Would make e-bikes vastly more appealing and also open it up as practical to people who live further out in Zone 3 or 4 (or outside of town for non London folk).

Train w4nker today also and that queuing arrangement is certainly ruffling feathers

E-bikes have definitely exploded this commuting year but I saw an MTB with an actual engine last night. He must have been going over 30mph down Balham Hill. It won't be long before someone kills themselves

I just checked Flyby actually, and saw we rode in pretty much together.. Was about to post here and apologise for not saying hi. You were on the Cervelo I take it, came out of Kings Road (Kingston) into the park, and went in front until just after Ham Cross?

Pretty quiet otherwise, although I nearly took out an RCC peloton on Priory Lane as I went past.

Would probably be reasonable. Like others my main concern with unrestricted e-bikes is that someone with no experience can jump on one and then hit 25+ without knowing their limits and how the traffic behaves.
