Cars are mentally expensive and it's not straightforward working out what one *should* do (brand new, second hand, bangernomics, finance, HP, PCP etc)

For that money though you could have bought an e-cargo bike as my friend keeps telling me, and has now convinced my wife that we need. We just bought a brand new car. FFS

I’m not cycling my 6 month old up to Yorkshire!!

    Even with pedal assist?

Was happy last weekend when I was able to buy an Ultegra rear calliper on clearance from Evans to fix my commuter.

Just listened to my answer phone messages and they’ve cancelled the order due to a “system anomaly which allowed you to buy an out of stock item”. What they actually mean is someone messed up the pricing.

I’ve just bought matching Shimano pads for the other calliper instead of my usual Swisstop as I was expecting it too.

Would love to say I won’t use them again, but to be honest if I saw a bargain I wouldn’t be able to help my self. Will just have to avoid them where possible.

Rear tyre has failed, Marthon Plus Touring, thought it was just a puncture which does happen now and then, but I can’t get the sharp out, and the tyre has so much damage probably time to replace, lots of deep slashes etc.

So I have been on car yesterday and getting on for 2hrs on the buses today and haven’t quite reached work...

Idiot with kid in car failed to give priority at a mini roundabout, drove fully over the central island while looking down presumably on his phone no MOT as well reported.

Good job i was being cautious.

Some plank decided that they'd plonk their motorbike between two Sheffield stands yesterday and lock up against it - despite the fact that my bike was also between the stands.

Rear wheel, pannier rack, derailleur & hangar bent.

The supermarket won't show me the CCTV of the event because of GDPR, and of course, I can't "prove" they did it, therefore can't claim against their insurance.. -

Supermarket can review the video themselves and see if the motorbike did appear to cause damage - at which point it is a criminal matter and should be referred to the police... do they want to obstruct justice?

I've asked them that. The supermarket are "considering", but still only likely to offer video to the police, which will have some resource allocated to it to request the video. This is Hampshire - highly doubt this will make it high enough up the priority list to get looked at.

Just as well it was my current pub hack bike.

  • Thought a mild lurgy I caught two weekends ago had gone by last weekend, but it has shown me who is boss when trying to give it full beans up that deceptively nasty cat4 climb on the Longleat estate (~432 feet over 1.2 miles)... Well over 30secs down on last year's time, nose and throat becoming full of gunk and legs really struggling up the steep second half. :(

Today's planned Gare Hill cat3 and possibly that nasty cat4 up Tower Rd are going to be fun later!

Got a similar thing with a hamstring 'niggle' which seemed to be OK but after a thrash around on the bike last night I nearly fell over in agony getting out of bed this morning.

Pretty foggy on the way into work this morning. More than 50% of the cars didn't have any lights on (100% of the cyclists did).

just looking at replacement pads for my Lid ... new lid = £45 - new pads ... £10 ... ! £10 !! it's probably not even 50p's worth of material - expect £3 delivered from the cheap places ... but no > £10 from them ... bah ...

More of a minor gripe. Waiting at a set of lights I observed a fellow cyclist sail past and across a pedestrian (note - pedestrian - not shared!) crossing. Motorist next to me had that bloody-cyclists look about him that a simple Gallic shrug of the shoulders failed to abate.

on a slightly similar theme, i was currently looking to buy some chainrings and got a new crankset in the end as the cost was basically the same!

Last night, on the way home:

    Snapped front brake cable
Puncture (first one in over a year!)
    Heavy hailstorm whilst repairing puncture

Any one of these three would be annoying, but manageable. Three at once was a bit rubbish.

    1. Went to London for the weekend, to visit friends and have fun with the kids. Come back home from work on Monday. What are kids playing? Trains at Clapham Junction, I kid you not.
    2. Had the bike fully serviced today. Well, "today", as I got a call in the afternoon, being told the bottom bracket replacement would not come until Friday. This is despite making it clear it'd probably need replacement when I booked the service last week. Two more days on the car or bus can't be too bad, right?
    3. Why does my commuting bike need so much caring? I must be doing something wrong, probably having cycled in winter without mudguards over the dirty shared paths. I'm seriously considering replacing my aluminium Defy with something sturdier, something with hydraulic discs, mudguards, 105 and within cyclescheme, but that final requirement is seemingly unachievable. Which brings me to...
    4. Why oh why do manufacturers sell otherwise nice bikes (Endurace Disc, Synapse Disc) without mudguard mounts?

Utter chaos on the roads little bit of snow two major roads closed queuing traffic everywhere put the ice tyres to be on the safe side after hearing reports of the accidents. Resultant delays caused me to get drenched and hailed on when i should of been in a nice warm office drinking coffee. Its APRIL

f##ktards close passing within a foot at 50mph in heaving rain when leaning into the cross wind that's just shoved you a foot to the left.
Not sure what would have happened if the wind hadn't moved me.

Oh yeah - and broke the cheap plastic "test" pedals that came with the bike 4 months/1500km ago. Pedal frame come away from the spindle, just like many others that I break.

It is really! I called him as he gave it to me so would have been awkward if not...

    You been paid the £62?

Not yet. He finally rang me after his sister in laws insurance got involved. I told him I'd stick with going thorough insurance at that point. Esure were good on the phone, she ran through the incident from my point of view, I provided a couple more images. She said that frankly my account made a lot more sense than the sister's (esp given that by her own admission she wasn't present, and had let someone driver her car uninsured). So, waiting for them to pay me. Apparently only a couple of weeks for such a small claim as they prefer to just clear them off their books, we'll see.

Got a cheque for £62 from esure yesterday. A slow but relatively painless process from my point of view.

Well done! I reckon the effect on the insurance premium will be twice that, and there’s probably no price that can be put on that between driver and policy-holding sister.

Got of the bike today to find a really tight pain in muscle /ligament behind the knee.
It had started twinging last night, assumed I'd pushed a little too hard on the ride home as I'd sprinted hard for a few miles. No problems when I woke up, but is like a hot poker now :(

Great to hear, hopefully a solid lesson for him that being a d1ck catches up with you. Fingers crossed he isn't taking it out on other cyclists...

    Mini-rant

Rear lights - cleaning them - we all know that the rear end of a bike gets dirty - even with mudguards, there's still spray and that spray carries dirt with it - it settles on any surface ... which then needs cleaning off ..

so why make a light with very small indentations in the lens making it practically impossible to clean quickly with a damp rag? Yes - the Aldi Fly6 knockoff is a PITA to clean... it's not the only one, but it's the one I have to clean the most....

Three miles into the commute I got a visit from the fairy. To make matters worse, I'd removed the minipump before cleaning the bike on saturday, and forgot to place it back, so there I was, depending on the mercy of a good samaritan.
    [end of rant]

If you are the mountain biker that helped a roadie with the pump on the telford path, then, again, a big thank you! In the end, I made it to Evans, and pumped it up there.

Have you tried connecting the Garmin via cable to a PC desktop/laptop and then browsing the Garmin files? In the activities folder there should still be a FIT file with Sunday's date on it. Manually upload it to Strava and it should be ok
