Went to put some oil on the chain this morning as I'd failed to give it a wash over the weekend (Sunday's weather wasn't much aligned with standing outside and cleaning a bike) to find that I'd knocked the chain oil bottle over when putting the bike away on Friday night, and it had leaked all over the shelves and floor - and there was none left in the bottle.

    "squeak squeak squeak"...
Water is quite effective as a short-term emergency chain lubricant; only lasts a few miles, but easy to carry plenty in a bidon. Of course you then have to let the chain dry out again before you can lube it properly. If you're at home, why not use cooking oil?

I find an rushed lube & wipe it's more about loosening up the layer of road gunk and removing it, than actually lubing the rollers, but that's probably just me.

I'll stick it through a proper wash & re-lube tonight.

How did you manage it? I've had to do this twice in our living room with mice, once caught it in tupperware and once had to grab it by the tail. My cat was equally useless, interested and leaping around a lot but no actual catching (though prime suspect for how the mice got inside).

Mice I can usually catch in a container such as tupperware; I was however reluctant to catch the rat. Luckily I was able to provide it with a means of escape and allowed it to jump out the back double doors.

We had hoped after 8 years that she (the cat) would have calmed down but instead, it looks as though she's gone up a league.

FFS, my buyers have pulled out after 5 months. This is the second time this has happened (first time after 6 months).

Apparently they got some quotes for some work they wanted to do post completion (rewiring and renovating the loft) and they are higher than expected, so have decided to pull out. I'm livid.

Local council have put out consultation on public parking ...

Basically they want to make all residents pay to park their vehicles on the street somewhere in the vicinity of their home and restrict anyone else to parking for limited time or paying for it.
Fortunately it doesn't affect me - in that I'm not in the areas affected, but there's no regard to encouraging non-car use - it's just "pile on the charges" against the motorist again...

and this is for a city center that's seeing a lot of shop closures - due the lack of footfall ...

Gah. I hate charges for on-street parking; not because they charge, but because they're never high enough to actually encourage people to dump a car, and once people have got a car parking space they've directly paid for, they never, ever, will give it up for movement of people in things like bike lanes...
Hampshire CC scuppered themselves last year and I called them up on it - on street parking never earned enough money to cover the charges, so upped the price to circa £100 a car, when the cost of providing cycle lanes, which was also discussed in the same meeting, was deemed too costly, despite the benefit/cost ratio of the cycle lanes being significantly positive than the cark parking provision, which is shown to be negative...

So, it turns out that I'm diabetic and didn't know it. It appears that regular daily exercise has masked the symptoms but having a couple of months off exercise for several reasons has allowed it to reveal itself.

Bum. But better to know than not.

Dunno. I occasionally feel the need to push things off work surfaces and I hate cucumbers. Does that help?

It's unusual for adults to get Type 1, but not unheard of - Steve Redgrave being one example.

Looking to sell up and move this year. I hope I don't have the same issues. Estate agent said houses on my street both rent out and sell quickly. I know a house down the road saw new occupants move in 3 months after the sign went up. That's quite common over the 19 years I've been here. This should be in the anti rants thread but if we're still here next year I'll post on here too.

My parent's big house has not had an offer on 2 + years. Another house in the family has had two accepted offers result in no sale. That's certainly disheartening.

Alcahol can be drunk still but does affect blood sugar readings and gives false highs, booze will raise it then drop it over a similar time period to your body metabolising it. I still drink but not often and when home I'll only have one bottle per night.

Both types have the same symptoms. Insulin regimes these days make contol much easier compared to 25+ years ago.

Feeling grim, coughing up my guts, and only managed about 3 hours sleep last night owing to the coughing bouts. Really, really should have taken Rower's advice not to go for a run on Monday lunchtime. My daughter's just had tests for whooping cough, and we're awaiting results. Bl**dy well hope it's not that, both for her, and for me, as that lasts for 3-4 months......

Not yet. He finally rang me after his sister in laws insurance got involved. I told him I'd stick with going thorough insurance at that point. Esure were good on the phone, she ran through the incident from my point of view, I provided a couple more images. She said that frankly my account made a lot more sense than the sister's (esp given that by her own admission she wasn't present, and had let someone driver her car uninsured). So, waiting for them to pay me. Apparently only a couple of weeks for such a small claim as they prefer to just clear them off their books, we'll see.

Yesterday I had the misfortune of being closely tailgated by a bus this was after the driver half overtook me as I rolled to a stop at a red traffic light. I had the speed to get to the red light and stayed 6 foot from the gutter but still the driver wanted to pass me even though the queueing traffic was too close. Just before the lights changed the driver tried to get a head start on me and moved right slightly, all to no avail.
Notified the company via Twitter and had the usual replies including the obvious one about riding in the middle of the road which was shot down with a response about the responder getting his lanes and roads mixed up and after a little digging it turns out his anti-cycling mindset is cause he's a bus driver.

mine was just as I was following a queue of traffic in prime in the lane last night, 4x4 just pulls alongside me, then moves across as if I wasn't even there, it was a definite get out of my way or ill hit you move by them, but I cant even report it to the police because the damn camera which seems to go all blurry low grade vision at night, cant pick out a clear reg and it wasn't the thing uppermost in my mind to collect whilst it was happening.

Yes I've been deliberately shunted from behind while in the ASL at Albert Bridge junction on Embankment - Jaguar driver gently moved up to my back wheel and pushed me forward. And I've been "moved out of the way" by a driver while I was waiting at the lights at the end of Kingston bridge: driver just drove up and pushed me sideways out of the way. I broke her wing-mirror for that.
