Should have wore my Gabba to work today. Looked out of the window before I left and decided to put the Sealskinz socks on but decided against the Gabba which seemed a good move till a mile from work when it absolutely pee'd down.

Rare opportunity I have the car available at the weekend so drive up into Northumberland to ride where I normally don't get the chance. 40 miles in and smack bang in the middle of the 2 bigger climbs of the day rear mech starts playing up. Stop to have a look to see if I can fix and no doing so attempt to nurse it back to the car.

Half way back up the climb it jams and bends the rear hanger. Attempted to move the mech out of the way of the wheel but the hanger snaps. Remove some links from the chain and convert to single speed to get me home. but don't remove enough so stuck in a stupidy low gearand pretty much have to freewheel the 10 miles to the car. 2 miles from the car the chain explodes so walk the rest in the pi$$ing down rain.

I don't mind drivers giving me insufficient room but when I've got my 6yo with me an a middle aged prick in a 4x4 coming the other way decides he has priority then some choice language and hand signals not recognised by the Highway Code might be used.

I was going to post something similar last week but forgot, was riding home from work approaching a section of A road that is a bit of a long gradual incline. Maybe four or five cars ahead of me and I'm on the brakes, turns out there was a guy out riding with his son who I would guess was around ten years old. The young lad was struggling up the hill and a little ragged and his dad was just behind, riding as if two abreast to protect him. Some absolute **** in a Land Rover was literally beeping the horn at them, over and over again, swearing out of the window. Poor lad was frightened half to death

To the cockwomble in the range rover who thinks overtaking closely on a roundabout is OK.

    Yes you were too close

Yes I did do a w@nker gesture at you after you passed

No I'm not 'being precious' about you passing so close

Yes, if you've got time to stop and argue you've got time to wait to pass until it's safe to do so.

Yes I'd be happy for you to get out of you car, why haven't you?

Yes you did drive off quickly when you realised you were being shown to be a little mouthy dick.

And yes the woman in the car behind us pulled along side me and agreed what a complete braindead moron you are.

No, I do not want to partake in the demonisation of women in the media by hearing about how Helen Skelton was 'slammed' for wearing a short skirt under a desk, or about Laura Trott's 'bitter' sister. At least the obvious tat is easier to ignore, the tabloid drivel irks me because I know people actually read it.

Never mind, just have to wait for the NHS to get their arse into gear and accept that taking daily doses of Tramadol to manage the pain really isn't a best use of money and that maybe, just flipping maybe the gallbladder removal I have been waiting for for 8 months now is actually urgent and not just 'routine' :x :x :x

I took the girlfriend's lad out on a ride with me tonight. Same situation - long incline but with a sharp bit in the middle. Idiot in an SUV comes up behind and beeps. He shut his f***ing mouth soon enough when I dropped back, looked over my shoulder and shouted "HE' S TEN!!!". Even apologised when he went past, slowly, a few seconds later. Think he just saw 'cyclist' and shut his brain off

When riding with my kids a few years back I was hit on the arm by the wing mirror of a car that was in a desperate rush to join the back of a queue 50 yards ahead. When challenged his defence was that it was my fault as I was in the middle of the road. I pointed out that I was further out to protect my kids from cnuts like him and that he hadn't got very far anyway. At that point I had to back off as I didn't want my kids to see me drag a man through his window and beat him to a bloody pulp.
This is why I'm in favour of better infrastructure, no amount of education will help with the terminally selfish and stupid. A proper segregated path will protect my kids more.

Speaking of vitamin T, be warned, I just took myself off Tramadol 6 weeks after breaking my femur; let's just say I have rather more sympathy for junkies than previously. Nothing at all like giving up fags.

Rant/Antirant: highly recommend zwift for rehab, but some side effect of the damage from the crash has turned my previously cast-iron nether regions into a princess-and-the-pea imitation. Need to find a new saddle for my turbo setup.
  • Not a rant as such more a grumpy grumble, riding the river way the other day, ie wide tow path, some chap really wanted to overtake, I was on the old MTB civvies panniers and he was Lycra and on a lighter MTB.

So I can see why he might wanted to, I could hear his tyres fair enough I was pootling.

He took a age to overtake and then pulled in very close in front, on a wide open track...

And then slowed I free wheeled move sideways for a short while before continuing my pervious pace, ie overtook him, no where to be seen by time I turned off.

I really don't get the overtake into someone's braking zone or slowing etc. Bare in mind this was at 12mph pootling along the towpath speeds

I know its Sunday, they are sunday drivers out on a bank holiday weekend, but still I had to put up with some god awful driving whilst out on the bike today.

had a car who forced their way past to join a traffic queue less than 25 metres up the road, who then "accidentally" started rolling backwards as we waited, at least a whole wheel circumference rollback as I started out directly behind and ended with a wheel overlap to their bumper as I tried to hop out the way to avoid them hitting me.

had another guy less than 10metres from a T junction pulled alongside me to overtake, at least he realised unless he was driving an F1 car he wasnt going to accelerate get by pull back in and stop in time.

another car so impatient to get ahead drove across and launched themselves in the air over a raised mini roundabout,

then there was a Range Rover who overtook within elbow touching distance, countless other close stupid passes at speed, when someone overtakes and then has to put the brakes on because the traffic isnt travelling half as fast as they think that kind of thing, or the you are descending pretty quickly but I must still get ahead of you overtake, and even when on single track roads, or steep hills where I pulled over let other traffic through or pass, didnt even get thanked or acknowledged once.

at least the ride itself was enjoyable,if a tad wet in places :)

New Lewisham roundabout is now in place - all I can say is ..errr confused, and not a great deal of signage.

Be careful if you use it, it's quite a big change and I'm not sure for the better!

Went down to my parents yesterday and witnessed some hideous driving, these 2 top the list.

Artic (with trailer in average 50mph) undertaking cars on the inside lane and then cutting cars up in the middle lane when the inside lane wasn't moving fast enough.

2 cars pull out in front of me in on a completely straight road where I'm making good progress at 60, if the emergency braking wasn't enough they then proceed to drive at 40mph on a section of road that's good for a ton but oncoming traffic prevents overtaking.

    Cracked frame.

Only a mile or so in to the homeward ride and something started rattling and feeling a bit odd. I initially thought it was the bottom bracket and not fancying another 10 miles like that I very gingerly pootled over to Elephant & Castle. While waiting for the train, I spotted a neat crack through the drive side rear dropout, where it sockets into the end of the chainstay. Bike was approaching its 20th year so doesn't owe me anything but was an old and very close friend. Being steel it's technically repairable but I doubt the cost would be justified.

    Very much :(
