I work in a school running the network. Dealing with a certain online school data services provider, which has recently expanded the offering to include support for setting homework for students via their web system, which our SLT jumped at the chance to sign up for.

A week and a bit into term, 'Omnishambles' and 'Clusterfuck' are the two words that spring to mind for their system and support of it.

Pearson? I worked for them for a few months. I walked away as I didn't want to be associated with anything they produce.
I think we have to use 3 or 4 different systems across the 2 schools the kids go to. One of them is an absolute nightmare from a users point of view. Every time we try to log on we have to change the password as it requires a change on a monthly basis. It also insists on the most complex password criteria. The only thing we need to look at on it is the end of term reports so it's hardly high security stuff.
Mmm, although the laws on data protection surrounding student data are pretty tight, as you can imagine - some people are sensitive about complete strangers getting access to the little darlings school report....

One of the more glaring issues with the system I'm moaning about is the ease with which you can change a complete strangers password - you put in the email address, click 'new password' and a new one is generated and emailed to the user.

If the user hasn't checked their email, they then find they can't log on.

I moaned about this to them, they responded by freezing all our passwords without full consultation with us.

The best bit is that there was no change to how the website appears to work - it'll still tell you it's generated you a new password, and email you a new one, it just won't have actually changed.... same deal if you go via the change my password settings screen. Says it has changed your password, hasn't.

So this leaves me in the situation of telling people to start going through every password they can remember, and every one they've been emailed, as one will probably work.....

We've now suggested that they unfreeze them without delay and don't do anything so fucking stupid ever again.

Not Pearson incidentally, although I'd be lying if I said I hadn't used numerous other school service providers and found them to have made similar mind-bogglingly stupid choices. None that beat this one though.

    Witness attempted suicide.

I have recently taken to riding a motorcycle (only temporary mind). Watched in horror as a cyclist squeezed between two high-sided HGVs only to have the lights go green on him. Asshole wobbled, fell against moving HGV but miraculously managed to stay upright. HGVs pull ahead none the wiser. Cyclist sat in the middle of the road with grazed arm. I swear an angel must have been looking out for him. It could have ended up so, so worse. I was shaking and gave him a mouthful. Said thanks and cycled off, headphones in, oblivious to what just happened.

Do what you will on your own time. I just don't need to be witness to it.

Turns out the "rip stop" elastic on my overshoes around the cleats had remained attached to the bike.

I had a nice close pass from a copper this morning - what chance do we have if that's the example being set?

I pulled up to him at the next set of traffic lights but couldn't be bothered to make any sort of gesture. Thinking back though they probably all have dash cams so should have taken his number plate.

    I'm contemplating this...

"I’m not sure the second sentence in the ‘Cyclist Safety tips’ document is actually true…

“Remember they are travelling green and not polluting the environment so should be given priority”

Roads don’t work on ‘Emission based priority’. We’d all be pulling over for Toyota Prius’ (Prii, officially) & Nissan Leafs.

How about “Remember: They’re people, getting from A to B just like anyone else on the road”?

There’s a video by the great Chris Boardman that shows how to overtake a cyclist.

    Have a wonderful HSSE day,

Finally got around to setting up my new hydraulics only to find out the bleed screw on the front one is knackered and won't tighten properly. Internal thread is f*^%ed.

Super - now I have to return it and wait for a replacement before I can ride the new bike. Balls.

Tried to replace a rear brake cable without checking to see if I had a spare before I started the job, luckily have a spare bike.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Rant - Antirant - Rant:
Whilst away my teenage lad decided to host a small party. This resulted in friends-of-friends turning up any my hardtail being taken. No-one seemed to know who did it. Cue call to the police and a shrug of resignation that it will never be seen again.
The following weekend I'm dropping a friend near a local shop (yeah, I'm using the car now) when I spot a familiar-looking bike propped up just outside. Call the police again to say I think I've found it when, during the call, a young lad steps out of the shop and starts to roll away with the bike. Confront him, whilst still on the 'phone to the police. Fortunately he just says, 'take it, man, I don't want to be involved...' and my bike is duly returned (police do turn up and, armed with a description I gave, go looking for him - to no avail).
So, minor miracle! On the downside, the bike is now missing its lights and saddle-bag (with tools) and has seen sufficient abuse to warrant a visit to the LBS for a good service (I was toying with this anyway, to be fair, but it's current condition has made that pretty much a necessity).

  • The cost of weddings or more specifically things they think they are being generous including. Just got engaged and looking at venues. The prices of some venues are bad enough (£10k for venue use and no food!!!) but I love the little snippets they slip in to make you think you are getting value for money... One place include in their costed package "advice on the best menu to choose", not the food itself just advice on what you could have, think that's called a menu. Another felt the need to mention that they are throwing in a cake knife and cake table (I think they even used the word plinth).

Luckily I am marrying a pretty grounded young lady who realises that it's just about the two of us getting married and is yet to be taken in by all the glossy advertising that is in wedding magazines (separate rant about the price of those may be needed). We're a glass of wine and a log fire couple so we're spoilt for choice for the type of venue we're after - big country pub with some rooms attached.

Congratulations on getting married. Sorry your getting stiffed on the wedding prices.
Recommend, especially if your just wanting that, that you NEVER mention that it's a wedding, just a family do and you want to do the pub out "nice". Friends did exactly that, and the venue worked out 2 days before it was for a wedding when the DJ rang them, and instantly flipped out and doubled the price.
Asked them what they were going to do differently, couldn't answer with any suitable reasoning, so gave in.

  • To the lady who honked at me when I had the temerity to be overtaking other cyclists when she caught up with me in Hammersmith: No, it is not dangerous of me, and no, I didn't force you to overtake me dangerously. And yes, it is the point that you only got to the next queue ahead of me, where I overtook again. And do you really want your child to see you injure someone with your car?
To the cyclist who took umbrage and screamed "What's your flipping problem??" in her face: You're not helping.

    Congrats!

It can be done very nicely and quite cheaply if you're prepared to do a bit of prep yourself and limit the number of guests. We went registry office for the ceremony. Wife made her own dress. We stuck to close family and close friends, hired a room above a pub which friends decorated, another friend did the flowers. It was a choice of burger or fish and chips or veggie for food. Someone else made the cake. We asked guests to contribute a few songs each and stuck the ipod on in place of a DJ. Ended up with about 40 people there including kiddies. Was lovely and didn't cost the earth.

Admittedly we didn't really have a big blowout honeymoon..

re weddings etc. Yes I have been happily married for 25 years which meant that we were married before it became de rigeur to have some kind of big fat gypsy wedding stylie ceremony/wedding breakfast/evening or imagine that it was going to be featured in 'Hello!' magazine.

I too married a very grounded girl/woman who realises that the big expensive do is all a load of old tosh.

I got married earlier this year and although the lovely wife said she didn't want a fancy wedding, when it came to the crunch we had 120 guests and it cost a bloody fortune!

Yes, totally get the OPs point about all the little things they itemise, down to the number of candles etc.

Be careful about booze, a lot of venues will only let you buy booze from them...or they tell you that you can bring your own wine, but it's a £15 corkage fee...

Assuming you'r reasonable about venues etc, the biggest determinant of the price of a wedding is the number of guests.

Luckily, there are few people in the world who can put up with me (I wonder why I have so many posts on here...), so mine next month won't be all that much.

And don't forget to take the honeymoon into account. After all, that'll last a bit longer...
