Charging the 705 today and a screw fell out. Felt glad it was when it was charging, not on the road.
Turns out I appear to have caught it at some point and applied a little too much force to a corner, as the bit it screwed into in the case had snapped off.
Now pondering options, as it's no longer waterproof.

Edit: aha, sugru to the rescue!

Three hours sleep last night, went to bed around 02:00 and woke up at 04:30 due to a medical matter and couldn't get back to sleep for 2 hours and finally got back into bed for an hour. Not the best preparation to be in an office on my own with very little to do for three hours today, felt myself drop off several times. Luckily I had the option of going outside for some fresh air.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Local main road closed this morning due to fire.
Cue loads of drivers trying to find alternatives, including loads on my normally quite route, not quite knowing where they were going on the back routes, so close passes, late brakers, overtakers on blind corners/hills etc were rife.
I normally count 6 or 7 cars once I get onto the rural roads, today was in the 50s/60s.

You are far from alone in this.
I avoid talking about the Triumph Bonneville that's in bits in my garage because my wife gets annoyed about it. The quick overhaul started about 7 years ago. But then I did deliberately sell a perfectly functional motorcycle and buy a project to make myself cycle to work. So it's been successful in that resect.

have boys and get them into cycling. okay, so the first fifteen years was tough but once you get them cycling it's an excuse for boys toys, bike building and cycling holidays.

My two boys are now 25 and 23 and we head off to the Alps or the Pyrenees for a cycling holiday to follow the TDF. Done this every year since 2011. Also taken my eldest for a weeks MTB 3 times, first when he was just 16.

The best part is that the lovely mrs idle sees this as family bonding time and not cycling and so she encourages it/helps me book it!

I'll be putting two on eBay shortly after our youngest has decided to ride the pink Barbie bike with stabilisers we got from the charity shop. She's never really been interested in the balance bikes; scooters are much easier for kids.

Ours had a scooter with seat from about two. Terrifying because she quickly worked out that she could lift her legs up and fly down any hill that presented itself - much faster than Daddy can run - and usually towards a lake, road, spinning blades etc. Gave us a few heart-in-mouth moments. Now she has a balance bike and we've taken the seat off the scooter. She hasn't quite mastered her balance on the bike yet which is a relief and we've taken the seat off the scooter which slows her down a bit.

She likes the balance bike because Mummy and Daddy have bikes and she likes the scooter because all her friends have them.

My son went straight to stabilisers, my dughter had a balance bike when her time came. We found that when she moved up to a "proper" bike that she didn't want the stabilisers as they held her back. Took them off after 1/2 hour and she was off. The balance bike had already given her a feel for the riding position, she just had to work out how to use her legs.

Girlfriend has kids, boy is ten and we're trying to encourage him to find something he likes (he's bone idle and sits around on his ipad/phone all day, which drives the gf to distraction). Bought him a road bike a while back and he's just now starting to ride it - hoping he sticks at it and enjoys it because I don't want to be one of 'those' people who pushes a kid into doing something they don't really like. It's good to go out with him, but he gets discouraged very, very easily - I'm hoping he still wants to do it after he has his (inevitable) first off.

  • Rant at myself to engage rule 5 this morning. Had to repeat it approx. 40 times in total after looking longingly at the car keys, the when on the road, and going up the hill.
Especially as it wasn't wet, dark, or particularly windy.

Speaking of vitamin T, be warned, I just took myself off Tramadol 6 weeks after breaking my femur; let's just say I have rather more sympathy for junkies than previously. Nothing at all like giving up fags.

Rant/Antirant: highly recommend zwift for rehab, but some side effect of the damage from the crash has turned my previously cast-iron nether regions into a princess-and-the-pea imitation. Need to find a new saddle for my turbo setup.
It's funny how reactions to drugs differ. I have no problems coming off Tramadol and when my back pain was severe I was taking 10 caplets a day. No nausea or bad side-effects, just that mild euphoria. Lovely stuff.

My brother-in-law, on the other hand, takes one tablet and is in la-la land, despite being twice my size.

Trying to give up sugar made me feel the same sympathy for junkies & smokers. Thankfully sugar is a socially-acceptable and cheap addiction :)

Rant: school hols are almost over and the roads will be back to normal :(

Mildly damp so I decided to take the CX. Much faffing about with lights, pumps and finding and appropriate spare inner tube later I'm on my way. 300m up the road and the chain snaps (maybe this should be an anti-rant that it wasn't 3km up the road).

Coast back home and repeat that faff transferring kit to another bike.

Our model is also a Spaniel; happy to go out for a run this morning, which given there was an interlude between run and bike, means I'm not transgressing #42

Ah, mine gets a morning walk rather than a run, so there is never the risk of breaking rule #42.
I've never, ever had mine decide that he didn't want to go outside, even 15 mins after a 20 mile hike in the p!$$ing rain & sleet and "just" got him dried and asleep, the moment I went to the front door to throw out the bin his was ready to go again.

you can tell the schools have gone back now that the roads are suddenly full of half asleep zombies all competing in the must get to where Im going ahead of everyone else grand prix at maximum attack speed.

so go ahead reverse out of your drive at me without looking to see if the road is clear, or just simply pretend it is and drive straight at me anyway, or better still be a pedestrian and just walk into me or just drive along and randomly flash your headlights and make obscene hand gestures, yes its great to have all you t*****s back on the road again after six weeks relative peace
