Riding along on the inner of two lanes and a car moved from the outside lane to pass me very close but he did warn me of his approach with a long blast of the horn, also the car was untaxed. Will grass him up to the local plod not that I expect them to do anything.

Small cut in my back tyre has now started to get bigger, and to bulge. The tyre's only done 900 miles, and there's plenty of tread left. Are tyre boots suitable for long term usage?

I wouldn't, I can feel them as I ride and it is very annoying for anything other than to get home!

    what tyre is it?

Giant P-SL2 in 700x28c format. Bought when they were selling them for silly prices at Rutland cycling (£7.50 if I remember correctly). Nice tyres, but a bit too fragile for daily commuting. I've never actually worn one out properly. Had the sidewall go on one, unrepairable gash in another (after 300 miles), and now this cut.

Ironically, the most durable commuting tyre I've ever used is the Continental GP4000s. They go on forever, and grip like nothing else. Trouble is, they're just too expensive really to justify.

Not sure what I'll go for as a replacement. Has to be 28c sized and not cost more than £15, as I'm a tight wad when it comes to my commuting bike.....

Having had a few gashes to my Conti GP4seasons and 4000s I didn't want to replace the otherwise perfectly good tyre - so gaffertaped a tyreboot to the inside and placed the tyre on the rear of my commuting bike - runs perfectly well - just keep an eye on it - depends how critical that commute is ...
I wouldn't put it on the front "just in case" ..

This is what it looks like (note the 'tufts' of cords poking out of the hole, and the slight bulge):

    Terminal?

If so, what are fellow commuters recommendations for decent but not too expensive tyres (in 700x28c format) these days? I don't require any special puncture protection, as I'd rather fix a puncture every 1000 miles than ride on heavy inflexible tyres. Are Continental Ultra Sport II tyres any good?

Well you are right about Conti 4000s - they are the only tire I ever buy apart from Schwalbe Duranos, which are my winter choice. You can pick those up for £20 or less if lucky. (Chain Reaction has offer at the moment, incl. 700x28)
Isn't the extra fiver or so worth it for quality / durability?

I use Durano Plus, and very rarely have punctures, just one this winter and I do 38mi per day. However I put it down, not to the tyres so much as my hunting for and picking-out any embedded shards before every ride home. Prevention rather than cure, takes a minute or so, your next puncture is likely already in your tyre!

Another vote for Durano Plus. I used to be a Conti devotee, but even on the more robust 4 Seasons the sidewalls just weren't robust enough. Durano Plus feel much the same on the bike as 4 Seasons, and (touch wood) have been way more reliable.

Hmm... Durano's - could be a possibility. Hadn't thought of those. I religiously check my tyres for flints every morning in the garage at work (which is how I discovered this cut), and dig anything I see out. I've not actually had a puncture with these tyres since I've had them (though probably will on the way home now I've said that!). It's just that they have a tendency to cut up badly.

    Cannondale UK distribution.
Ordered bike from LBS on 4th Jan. Still not received by LBS as of yesterday. Apparently someone at Cannondale can't a) upgrade a computer system properly B) print off a list of outstanding orders when system goes down and C) send the bike when they say they will. Much complaining from me and the LBS. According to Cannondale they have now released the bike and it should arrive tomorrow, believe it when I see it! LBS gave me a free set of lights, told him it was not necessary etc etc but he wouldn't let me leave without them!
I really hope the bike shows up tomorrow. 6 weeks and counting on PT is doing my head in.

Same here - Durano Plus for the commuter all the way. I keep an eye out for flints, bits of glass etc too. Have actually been surprised at the size of some of them that I've dug out given that the Duranos haven't punctured as a result.

There's a guy I go riding with from over there in pro race - swears by tubeless.

Must confess I was impressed when he picked up a big hissy puncture and within a few seconds it was all sealed up and we carried on.

He insists I should go tubeless for the commute.

Can always stick in an inner tube he says.

I've known folk to put some sealant in the inner tube itself for the same effect.

It's official the ASL is no more, they may as well remove them altogether.

I didn't however point out to the bint parked right across the ASL in her Audi that she shouldn't be on the bloody phone as well.

    Speaking of punctures.

I punctured. Found the piece of glass that did it, and pulled it out.

Repalced inner tube. Wouldn't pump up.

Was by the side of a noisy road and it was dark and cold. Spent 10 minutes looking for the hole. Found it, patched it up.

    Still would't pump up.

Found another hole. patched that up.

    Still wouldn't pump up.

Checked the tyre again really thoroughly for anything else. Nothing. Then the wheel.

Checked the inner tube again. Then the other one - couldn't find the hole in that one.

Walked home. Took me an extra 35 mins. It was cold.

    Buses. Hate em.

Stop indicating and pulling out at the same time
Stop not giving a f**k at give way signs
Stop pulling away in your bus lane whilst cyclists are already overtaking - let them get back in.

A visitation on the way home caused by a piece of glass, very hard to see the glass at 22:10 on an unlit path. Hole in tyre so had to boot it with a five pound not I had with me to get me home.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

two early contenders for stupidest motorist overtakes of the year award, #1 was overtaking me on a descent as we went over a level crossing & #2 single track road, passing point literally 5 metres away when there would have been room to pass, but no guy decides to drive through verge/hedges to get past me instead

although honourary mention for my Audi driving near neighbour who just drove straight off his drive onto the road, without looking...

Aargh! Another day, another tyre slash from broken glass. The 'click, click, click' as I was cycling up Kingston HIll gave the game away. I don't think this one's gone quite through the cords though. Can't wait until my Durano's arrive.....

that special skill known as indicating has also gone the way of the ASL, red lights and using your mobile whilst driving.

Seriously WTF is going on with drivers today?

PS. I was in my car just now a witness more than a dozen people not indicate, two of which also drove onto the roundabout with a car (me) already on it causing me to brake to avoid a crash.

Sorry to hear about your son, glad he's OK now. Yep, uncertainty is the worst bit, especially as tfr first doctor didnt take us seriously for feeling under the weather, they are now taking it very seriously which makes us more worried! Cheers for the feedback.
