Planning tomorrow's commute in, and knowing I'll be carrying an extra 4kg of cake and chocolate to assist those I work with celebrate getting slightly closer to my retirement age. And knowing that officially, I shouldn't be eating any of it, as I've just cut up celery and carrot for my mid morning snack!
    Edit:
And have just remembered that because I was running late last Friday, I didn't instantly do the end of week basic service of the chain. Cue rusty chain and chainrings. Liberal application of GT85 tonight and lunchtime tomorrow being chain clean lunch!
Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.

No need, child woke me at 4:16 this morning  , which is the witching hour for me. walked the dog for an hour while the chain was soaking, and therefore all nice and sparkly for 7am.

Picking up a pinhole puncture first thing this morning was annoying. Not to mention in Regents park where it had no street lighting.

Fumbled around and got it sorted out, the most annoying part was the grime all over my hands and having to insert them into freshly washed and weather proofed gloves :(

I've got one of those annoying rattles on my bike coming from the front end. When riding along with my weight on the saddle it is present but as soon as I put weight on the front end it goes. Only obvious thing I can see when doing a roadside check is the mudguard bracket on the fork crown.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Always carry a couple of pairs of workshop latex gloves, weigh nothing and keeps your hands clean.

Silly woman pulled out of side road onto the main road across a cycle lane without clearing her windows. Bus to the right of me, mini to the left, so the mini got it. Nothing like an SPD stamp & pedal rash along your pristine paintwork to realise you should have cleared your window before pulling out into the main road!
No damage to me or bike other than another scratch on the pedals.

    non-commuting related rant.

Much as I support the NHS junior Dr's, I wish they would now f##k off back inside. Their picket line is on the main road right outside my office and every car/van/truck/bus that goes by is honking their horn, and every honk gets a whoot whoot reply from said Dr's.

4 hours in, and it's doing my head in, really doing my head in....

Personally, I have nothing but admiration for them. I have been there and as a Junior Doctor patient care and working with your colleagues always comes first. Hunt has properly ballsed this one up!

They have islands made of dessert now? I never had one. I want one made of butterscotch angel delight. :(

Yup. Damned junior doctors earn so much and hardly work, so they spend their cash on lavish islands of instant whip and scooshy cream.

Damn it, when I was an SHO our islands were only made of rich tea biscuits. Couldn't afford angel delight. and we only drank Champagne every other day- we had to make do with fine Claret on the others.

When did footpaths start being referred to as "Footways" on road-signs?!

It doesn't even sound like a proper word!

Having spent large portions of the last 12 years in and out of the paediatric wards & ICUs of SW London, my experience of junior doctors was that they subsisted on the leftovers they could scavenge from the meal trolleys, and that if they slept whilst actually lying down in a bed, they were lucky, and that if they weren't physically beaten by the consultant on ward round then it was a good day.

Now I discover that this was all an elaborate charade, and they were actually gallivanting around on whole islands made out of pudding, whilst quaffing Chateau Latour and taking pharmaceutical grade diacetylmorphine. Pah. I should have studied harder at school.

Just to check - you've given up on the doctors role where the high pay with weekends off just didn't leave you to feel you were giving enough back to the country and decided to become a politician, right?

I am a civil servant. (Stone me now, put me out of my misery!)

I would not want to be a politician, poor gits. I mean, all those wages, expenses to fiddle, massive summer break and opportunities to employ relatives on silly wages. Sounds dreadful. ;)

Civil Servant? Well, if it pays for your riding habit, so be it. ( I can't complain, I contract to the civil service)

I've spent the last 20 years working in and around NHS hospitals & my wife is also a clinician. Junior Dr's take the brunt of all the cr@p that is thrown around from all directions - patients, managers, senior medics, politicians. For the most part, being a junior doc is like an A level physics student being asked to run the Cern laboratory, except if they make a mistake someone dies (OK, not the best thought though example, but you get my drift...). They know the theory, but putting it into practice is another matter.

So - bring on the well deserved dessert islands, champers, Angel Delight, Claret....just not outside my fekking office...!

Sorry, but the potholes were icy, drain covers & man hole covers were slippery today, so I stayed well out of the gutters :p

A few weeks back I got zapped by a passenger in a Clio who's driver then beeped and revved at me before overtaking.

Went into Christmas holiday without a problem. Since coming back after my two weeks off, where I didn't cycle:
    • Pain in the right knee when cycling - gradients are painful! Low gear all the time.
    • Did something to my thumb, opening a bottle of beer on the edge of a table - now can't grip!
    • Bike freehub is shot - found out first trying to move off in right lane of roundabout, and was spinning air.
    • Can still manage by a careful reverse/forward pedalling to eventually get the hub to engage but replacement freehub won't be here until next week!
    • Gears froze solid yesterday - only 3rd gear possible

Everything was fine before I had a fortnight off. Should have kept cycling. :|

Those are probably all related. Your freehub has got grease in it, which has become sticky in the cold. Bring the bike (or just the wheel) in the warm for a good couple of hours and see if that cures it.

If so, you might want to invest in some "low temperature grease" (or just throw cheapo ATF (power steering) fluid in the damn thing).
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

Thanks I did wonder that, but the Freehub started playing up prior to the freezing weather. I did however bring her in to the warm last night...

When testing a new light, forgetting that a nice change to full power is not the hold down for 2 second that your previous light was. Instead, it turns it off.

Just been zapped by a laser pointer from a school bus...nice

Had that happen to me, a laser pointer from a house window. I reported it to the Police within 2 minutes of it happening as it was 100 yds from the Police station but they didn't act on my report but did eventually act on another report from a local resident who had the laser pointed in her flat on a regular basis.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Had an odd one, even for me, this morning.

Going down an unlit country lane when it was pitch black.
Coming the other way was this blinding light, it was either a jogger or a cyclist due to the movement of the light it wasn't a car.

As it got closer the light was so blinding I could no longer see the road, any of it, and I could not judge distance, I couldn't even judge where I was on the road!
I almost ran into the cyclist coming the other way as I just couldn't see anything.

He grumbled that I should have been on the other side of the road, which of course I would have been had I been able to see it!

When I said that perhaps he shouldn't have had such a bright light pointing into the middle distance and perhaps he should angle it down a bit so it gave other road users a chance he got a bit upset.

You probably need to stretch your IT band. A google search will reveal all. I have to do my left side daily to manage karate and cycling.
