I'm reaching the point where I'm thinking new bike, which tbh I can't really afford - but equally, I can't really afford to keep throwing money at my current steed to keep it running. My work doesn't participate in C2W, but I suppose some kind of finance could be an option. Anyone recommend a good bike shop in either central (City would be best) or SE london that offers 0% finance?

Or build something up from 2nd hand parts!? I have a steel frame and Shimano RSX shifters, mechs, triple cranks and bottom bracket sat in my parents' garage up North. I can bring it all back down south after Christmas... yours for a few beer tokens...

  • But...but...I want a shiny new road bike..!

Cheers for the offer but that's essentially what I have now! I'm thinking new steed, then keep the old one in running order at my leisure to use as a bad weather hack. Mind you, to that end I may be interested in some of those components :)

The two-bike approach is definitely the way forward, I reckon.

    @ Gallywomack.

Evans do 0% loans via a company called MoneyWay, repayable over 12 months, no penalty if repaid early. I've funded my last two bikes that way although the SS was a 'no money, no sense' kind of purchase. There is a minimum spend, which I think is £300 but I might be wrong.

    Fair enough. :)

Just let me know if any of those spares are of interest. I can offer more details, if required.

Okay folks, back to the ranting!

Yup, but fat chance of the police doing anything about it.

Even when the police (after calling a driver in for assault) had a statement from the driver admitting to not reporting the incident, they've done bugger all.

I had nothing in my legs this morning, gawd it was hard work!

Hopefully I'll be able to share the load on the way home again, with the fast roadie I caught up with on Monday evening. It was quite nice to not be completely alone in the dark and the fog for once!

They're probably trying to avoid the annoyance of holding the door for somebody who just swans through without acknowledging you...

on the 'holding the door open' theme I really don't like it when someone holds a door open for me and I'm more than, say, 5 metres away from the door as I feel like I have to break into a little trot while gushing 'thank you thank you'. I'd rather walk at my own pace and open the door myself.

    It's a minefield I tell ya.

I am THE rudest person on PT.

Imagine, a packed tube. It's the wimbledon district line train on chelsea champions league match - say against United.

Some fat f*ck in blue is pressing his fat back against mine - i've made myself a tiny little bit of space by pressing back. A ridiculously good looking women is clearly trying to squeeze into my little space. I mean, we're talking everyone in the tube is stunned by her looks good looking.

I look round, very angry - "what do you think you're doing?"

"Just trying to squeeze into some space"

"Not in this space you're not"

She turns looking very hurt, the smelly guy next to me looks at me in disbelief...

Imagine another time. Someone accidently kicks me whilst trying to sit down. "Oh, sorry" << clearly not sorry enough. "So you should be"

Another time. Someone is trying to squeeze on, before the doors squeeze onto them. "Sorry, can I just get in here?"

    "No, you can't"

It's ridiculous. When I first moved here I was Mr. Polite.

    No longer.

I have to admit, I'm like Rick on the Tube. If I think the carriage is full already, then you're waiting for the next train or fcuking off down the platform; like fcuk you're squeezing in here. And if you have the temerity to invade my personal space or hit me with your backpack, then I'll give you a dressing down in front of the other passengers.

Ah I can see it now. Long, hellish day at work. Long hellish journey home on tube because the bike is in bits. Train pulls in and I try to get on. It's packed but not in my opinion full, next train is 8 minutes away so I force my way on - plenty of room down the carriage but people just cant be 'rsed to move. Ben objects and decides to give me a 'dressing down in front of the other passengers'. Only one way that is ending and it doesnt involve a polite sheepish nod from me.

    Pffft.

The trick is to bounce people back onto the platform. You don't want to p!ss them off and then be in close proximity for the next 5 minutes. Stand so that there is no room for their feet to land.

    That's the trick.

  • I've been off the bike now (and gym) for four weeks, been feeling really run down. Aches and pains, started losing my voice then hit by a really bad chest infection. Last week noticed massive lumps on the side of my neck and just can't get my breath. I tried to man up a 2 weeks ago and cycle home after the bike got tuned up, felt really good until I got in and coughed my guts up. Worse of all I can't taste anything, should prob go to the docs... ugh.

It sounds like you have a virus and you're not resting sufficiently to help your body get over it. The lumps on the side of your neck are, I guess, your lymp nodes swelling.

•Throat infections and tonsillitis may cause lymph glands in the neck to swell.
•Skin infections of the arm may cause lymph glands in the armpit to swell.
•Infections of the leg or genitals may cause lymph glands in the groin to swell.
•Viral infections such as glandular fever affect the whole body. You may then develop swollen lymph glands in various parts of the body such as the neck, armpit and groins.

    Look after yourself!

There are 4 bus companies that have routes in or are based around town. And today they were 4 for 4 on ignorant passing.

One in particular seemed the worst as I was fighting against the wind to stop being blown into the kerb when the bus passed. The sudden absense of the wind caused me to wobble a bit, not the best when there is a massive metal box a couple of feet away.

    1) He can't filter to save his life. You could get a bus through where he was crawling and stopping.

    2) ok, just because you have gears, doesn't mean you have to burn out at a thousand rpm in your smallest gear like a car when you set off.

    3) for someone who is frightened of filtering I'm surprised you think it's fine to sit behind me, so close that not only are you overlapping but you're blocking my view of cars coming up behind.

    4) clicking your sh!tty hybridy brakes impatiently at the lights is very annoying.

    5) if you're going to pass me off the lights in a whirl of legs, hurry up. You were very slow, and you breath like a priest at a school nativity play.

Last week I saw an unlit cyclist riding along an unlit NSL road in the dark (about 6pm).

I saw what I can only assume was the same rider last night (there aren't many cyclists around here, I doubt that 2 are both that stupid!). Except this time he had a light.

Yes, just the one. From what I saw as I went past him, it looks like a small torch attached to a lanyard around his neck. He was riding along holding it facing forward. As I went past he looked over his shoulder and saw a car catching up to him. So he swung the torch over his shoulder, so now the white torch was (dimly) pointing backwards. Unfortunately he was on a winding, but flat section of road with low hedges, so it would have looked as if he was much further away, on the other side of the road and riding towards the car (white=front, so must be facing the car, right?!) that was catching up with him, rather than being close by, on the same side, and riding away.

Seriously, he won't last long while he's doing that. If I see him while I'm on my bike, I'll try to tell him how dangerous he is.

tis the season for the crosser tra-la la la laa

I was nearly squatted last night by a motocross bike flying down the disused railway track i use to commute on.

he had no lights, it was pitch black an he wasn't wearing a helmet either

also...what is it with people having flash red lights on the front of their bikes?

and, people who do have lights on their bike but which have the wattage of the light on a casio watch

    the mind boggles

Not really a rant just an observation. I have seen two 'incidents' over the last two commutes that made me think.

1/ CS8/Cable street yesterday evening coming up to Shadwell in the dark. Car pulls out of side road onto rider causing mahoosive braking/avoiding manoeuvre on behalf of cyclist who then has to chase car before finally catching up and berating the driver in a controlled manner

2/ south of tower Bridge on TB Road heading north this morning a cyclist effing and blinding at a driver for failing to indicate. I was fairly close behind and didnt see what the fuss was about.

what's the point of the post? Both riders lost my sympathy as they proceeded to RLJ at the very next set of lights.
