I've allocated upto two grand for something a bit tastier early next year.

good to hear it Lagavulin. you've lost it mate haven't you
The plot? Yes, sometime ago now.

For my first road bike I justified, to friends & family, the £600 Sport over the standard Allez by saying if I get the better spec it could be one of the last bikes I buy. And they fell for it!

Now I'm telling them I "need" another one as swapping wheels over and re-calibrating the brakes and attaching/re-attaching mudguards is becoming a real hassle. :P

Their "but do you really have to spend several month's wages on one?" is falling on deaf ears.

  • Best road bike is a Somec Titano frame - titanium main tubes with Columbus Muscle carbon seat/chainstays and fork, Fulcrum Racing 3 wheelset, new Ultegra-SL groupset (replacing the 2007 mix/match 105/Ultegra setup), Deda Newton bards & stem (replaicing the Quattro/Big Piegga setup) with a Magic Stick seat pin and Fizi:k Arione saddle.

She's currently sat in Barnsley's Race Scene wowing new and existing customers alike awaiting the spring while I ride my winter bike for a while

I've given up justifying my bike/bike related purchases to friends and family. I have 2 standard retorts: 1. It's my passion. 2. I don't own a car!
  • Choice of 2;

Road bike - 18sp carbon Look KG241 with a Time Sprint carbon fork, Campag Mirage group, Miche 502 pedals & Vuelta Zerolite wheels with Conti GP4000S tyres. Fairly basic ITM/3T/Selcof finishing kit, but has a San Marco SKN saddle with Ti rails.
'Cross bike - 16sp Fort built in Columbus Foco steel tubing with Sintema Muddy carbon fork, mix of components (Mavic rear mech, Middleburn chainset, Chorus Ergopower, Modolo canti brakes), Time ATAC pedals & Mavic Open Pro + Hope (front)/Campag Record (rear) wheels with Schwalbe CX Pro tyres. ITM Millennium bars & Eclypse stem, cut-down Selcof Mod. 31 in-line seat post, plus SKN saddle same as road bike. Despite the beefy tyres and the steel frame, the weight difference between it & the road bike isn't much due to the 'cross bike's superior bits and bobs - and the 'cross bike might be even be a shade lighter!!

Road race bike - Ribble Scandium frameset with Campag Zonda wheels and mix of Veloce, Chorus (not flashy but mega light, stiff and not too expensive when crashed in a race).

TT bike - Quintana Roo Kilo with Corima rear disc, Bontrager deep section front, Home made carbon aero bars and another 'mix of Campag' drivetrain.

Hypocrisy is only a bad thing in other people.

Your allez sport is a fine looking beast. what bikes are in the running for the 2008 procurement programme?
Well my initial thoughts were for something like a Cannondale Synapse, Bianchi C2C or Spesh Roubiax Expert.

However, after investing a Toupe Gel I'm thinking maybe I don't necessarily need a sportive orientated bike. I tend to do 2-4 hours on a morning and longer rides at the weekend.

Aesthetically I took a fancy to the 2008 Colnago CLX in white which I think looks hot as hell and might go nice with my white 1850s quite well.

I think that would involve a bit of travelling to as I believe the nearest Colnago dealer is in Middlesbrough (somewhere I try to avoid at all costs )

So I haven't really ruled anything out. I'll probably restrict myself to Shimano though. Having invested in a nigh on £400 set of wheels the hassle of expense of a freehub swap is one I'd like to avoid.

While I'm not really ready to buy just yet I did see an advert from mailordercycles.com in either CW or C+ for a shop build S-Works Roubaix 07 with full Ultegra SL for two grand. That caught my eye buut I can't get their website to work at all.

I've seen a few entry level Pinarellos and De Rosa's but I've no idea whether I'd be better of with one of those than a high or mid-end Specialized, Giant, Trek or Cannondale.

You're obviously a man who cares about aesthetics in which case you'll want to avoid the Roubaix like the plague.

The synapse can be had pretty cheaply and has good reviews.

on the italian vs.mainstream ... it's how much you want to buy into the brand and how much value you place on looks. With a limited budget I'd personally be happy to trade a bit in weight for a bike that looked fantastic.

My lovely Enigma Esprit which has full Dura-Ace 10spd group-set, Fulcrum 3 wheels, ITM Visia stem and bars, Thompson Elite seat post, Selle Italia SLK saddle. I love it - all that lovely metal. The only carbon fiber bits are the bottle cages.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

After forking out that much, why did you not get some decent wheels? 8)
Where did you get it from in the end?

Got it from Westbrook Cycles, Stokesley near Middlesbrough. Excellent service. Great shop and nice people to deal with.

What's wrong with the wheels? What should I have gone for?

[hijack on] Seconded on Westbrook Cycles - where Mum and Dad bought me my first and only BMX bike (Raleigh Super Burner) 23 years ago. Great little shop then, and a great larger shop now. [/hijack off]

My best bike is a PLanet X Superlight Team decked out in glorious DuraAce,but it's far from the most expensive one I own.
It would be if I'd bought it first though.

That Hurlow is gorgeous Dickie. Did it have bar end levers originally? It looks a little odd without down tube levers, but a cracking machine. Check out those fillets!

Thanks for the compliment Rob. It was quite common in the late 60s-early 70s to have barcons on a race bike, I guess I have just got used to it. Rides very well, like a modern bike-almost

Nice wheels Craig. Did you ever get a set a Fulcrum 3s for training or are you using the Boras all the time?
    Brian B.
  • Hi Brian,

The Boras are my climbing wheels!!

I did get the Fulcrum 3's and they have been great so far. Very similar to the Kysrium elites in function and weight. I chose them just because I fancied a change from 4 years of using Kysriums.

All the best to you and Rich.

Ancient Principia RCS on the road with 9-speed D/A - love the ride! (my road bike has to come in on a very tight budget)

Duratec alloy track frame, steel forks, Nitto steel bars, D/A chainset, Izumi Super Mighty chain, D/A pedals, clips and double Binda Extra straps, Powertap wheel for training, budget second hand rear Mavic disc for racing and ancient HED deep section front wheel. NJS everything.....
