    Steve Peat manages :)

SPD's for all riding except street and down hill sessioning with walking back up. Far better use of power pedalling in circles which also aids traction and correct use of muscles. I only use my flats up Rotherfield

Personally I'd go with SPDs but i think its quite an individual thing
  • I would maybe consider at least trying spd's on the road, but not off road.. No way! It would put me off doing anything stupid, and that's baaaad

May well be riding this weekend young Steve.. That said.. Who does be knowing!

  • Yeah yeah I believe ya...

I'd kinda like to try somewhere new tbh.. There's an area just across the water from me.. Some good tracks... When and if you find them.
Nothing too heavy, more exploration really.. Would be taking the HR too yeehaa

 well im up for that, or we could go somewhere COMPLETLY new, just remember im not going to be there till later as ive started work again  bloody 4 o clock in the friggin morning i have to get up :(

remind me again whats the nearest station? all i seem to remember from last time is cramps and barb wire follwed by even more cramps, the "hi mountain bikers" girls ( jon secretly wanted to go back and get their numbers), the hot nurse making the cramp go away (damn she was hot  ) and then the freezing cold train from maidstone east to ashford

popping down t o the LBS after work may or may not come back with some SPD's depending on deals and prices

I know of somewhere new that you haven't been, but I dont know my way around it, at all.. And it's quite likely that if you came exploring with me.. Well, we'd end up there anyway :P
Only up for 4? That's when I start work!

Errm, in terms of quickness (I'd have to work out actual times) I'd say Maidstone East, over to Barracks, then down to this way would be your best bet, rather than coming through chatham via canterbury. Are you working both Saturday and Sunday? Sunday would be when I'm riding (incase you haven't figured lol)

As for the "Hi mountain bikers' girls.. Too young for me mate.. I have standards believe it or not

I wouldnt go for a long off road ride to a new place with spds for the first time! You want to try them out on a soft grass field and practising stopping and unclipping as you will forget and crash a few times!

More importantly, who/when/picture were these girls?

I feel I should apologise for the whole "new bike / pink horn" debacle (check ^^^^^ previous post)
It was a childish 'joke' and am sorry for any unnecessary excitement/trepidation it may have caused.

Have a good one Sunday fellas. And don't forget to let us know how the ride went.

Might well be riding on Wednesday - we normally decide early in the week. Anyone else up for Wednesday?
  • I would be, working Thursday as normal but hey I never sleep anyway so be good to get out for a ride.. Definately give the HR a blast around Blean this time though..

I should be good for Wednesday :)
Nick IIRC, you used plastic bags in your shoes, last week, instead of overshoes. How did that feel? I've broken the zip on 1 overshoe, and don't wanna buy a new pair yet.

It worked OK Ade, definitely kept the breeze off my feet so they were warmer than if i hadn't used bags. I got some Sealskinz socks over Christmas that replace the need for plastic bags now but they were a good interim measure

Right, 4 of us tomorrow at Swinley?

    Andy
    Mark
    Neil
    Me

Andy - I'll be round yours at about 7 so should give us plenty of time to get there for 9. Just off into town to demonstrate an exercise in self restraint! Have a good evening all, see some of you tomorrow.

    Ha ha good luck

Can i be a right pain, is it ok to stop at Tesco's on the way, as i'v just realised i'v got no cash or mid ride munchies?
  • Not sure about Wednesday now, giving blood on Tuesday quite late and it's strictly no exercise for 24 hours, plus I'm officially out of pain cream for my knees and am already going to have to endure Thursday at work without it..

So unless you want me passing out in the middle of Blean woods.. I deam it not a good idea.

Papa: I dont know the background behind your knees but have you tried playing around with saddle position and all that. I normally get a niggle in my right knee however as ive been using my Inbred for the last 3 weeks whilst I wait for the Turners forks to be fixed, I have had no pain at all and thats with the same saddle, seatpost height and pedals so clearly its down to my position on the bike which I need to transfer to the Turner

Flat pedals are the worse things as well, so much more strain on your legs in total plus you end up with really short hamstrings which then give you grief all the time as they are never used. I have a lot of trouble with mine and the only way to keep them vaguely in track is with spd's and ensuring I pedal in circles so that they are used

Yep, tried fiddling. On the HR it's normally fine, but a while ago I twisted my knee, had accupuncture regularly and it healed nicely, but then due to the strain I was putting on my other knee (I guess) I done almost the same thing to that within a few days of the other one healing (But not as bad - Can actually still ride this time).
I've had a change about on the I-Drive as that's what gives me the hassle, and it has become alot better, the main problem is my knees come up too much, abit like if I sit cross legged with knees cramped up = Agony. Trouble is the seat is way to high for comfort where it doesn't give me too much gip.

I don't stretch enough which don't help either.
But overal I've had a problem since birth, was born with severe abnormalities in both knees and a few years ago I went to the specialist who was somewhat amazed that only 5 muscles worked between my 2 knees.. Was amazed I could walk and told me that it was because of riding that I could walk at all.
But regardless of problems now, when you've been told my 4 physio's, 3 doctors and 1 very clued up specialist that your gonna be in a wheelchair by the time your 40.. Well, you kinda just throw caution to the wind and ride as much as you can.. Well, I do.

hmm that doesnt sound good :( Regarding the seat height, get yourself a second hand Gravity Dropper post, they go down to 27.2mm so should be ok. Can be a bit of a faff operating the one without bar mount as I find but even dropping it just 1 inch gives a load more confidence and it would mean you could ride at a correct pedalling height then drop it down quickly without stopping for the technical bits then let it pop back up again when on the smooth again

I went to bedgebury with the plan of doing 2 laps but just couldnt face it. This comment will sound weird to those who know the place but, I think it was better when it was a bit wet! The problem now as it was so cold is that all the ruts etc have frozen and its even more lethal than normal, even on the fireroad bits plus it was giving my back grief due to the constant holes and so on. Some bits are ok still but not many. I checked out one of the new bits which isnt open yet and that was good till the end which was too tight and it wont last long till its unrideable. We did one lap then the first few bits again then down the hidden/race track bit which was also rutted till the end then had a cup of tea and took our bikes down to the cafe as I refuse not to, what a joke saying you cant! Damm cold and the lake was frozen leading to lots of comedy slide landings by the ducks :D

One of my best rides at bedgebury was this time last year when it was fully frozen hard, it was so fast and actually made the trails slightly challenging. I guess the wet summer and winter we have had has rutted it up far to much to even make that fun anymore.
  • breezer
    breezer Posts: 1,225
It was great not having mud but the singletrack is in such a state with braking pumps, random holes etc that theres only a couple of bits where it flows at all then the muddy fireroads are now dry but lethal as so cut up and then frozen.

The best part of the day was the ducks at the cafe....although I did manage to get my most air yet on that berm bit where they cut down the trees on the jump after the first few berms but I was ranting the whole way round as even they were like riding over a cattle grid. I wont be going back there for a long time when I could be on the downs, in Friston etc

Im glad you ignored the signs about taking the bikes down to the cafe, we must rebel! Where abouts its the new section? when i get my fame back i may take an early morning ride round bedgebury "shock"
