Don't compare to others your ride is good for you it is about personal objectives.
Mine was to break 7 hours which I did.
39/21 was comfortable for me and that was with decent cadence, I used higher when out of saddle, but there were quite a few who got up faster than me but I rode my own pac up climbs.
When I checked data after I was on about 80% on climbs as they say its not a race [:D]
One guy in a black campag top, think he was on a colnago, wnet flying up past me and I reckon he got up at least 3 minutes faster than me [:D]
Out of interest what was your power output on the climbs? Max was probably on Cimla the steep one before 2nd climb of Bwlch?
    <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

No worries on the performance, I was happy to have beat my mate by all of 53 seconds... that was my personal objective. That, and not blow up!

My biggest one minute power output was up that last steep hill on the common at 339 watts. The biggest 10 minute output was the second time up the Bwlch at 238 watts. And I weigh 61 kilos... [maybe a bit more...].

Wow. I am 78 kilos so wonder what my power output was?

How do you go about sorting out the finishing times chronologically ?
Now results are published separately for both distances - step in the right direction .
It just doesn't make any sence in alphabetical order. Also, how do we know how many finishers , DNF , DNS ?

schmiew1 - I was riding 39x25 up the first Bwlch and 23/25 up the Cimla and second Bwlch. Looking at the other riders, I seemed to be using a much higher cadence, but I've been practicing riding up hills on the 53 in the last few weeks.

Oldwelshman - tatoos on the leg rings a bell for some reason. And I also saw a Merida and remember thinking "don't see too many of those", but no idea if it was at the same time. I was on the first line of the 3rd or 4th group.
    FCN 2-4.

Dragon times can be found via www.dragonride.co.uk and follow link through to results and then this takes you to Raceahead web-site. Don't get too exceited though because for some very bizarre reason the results are published in alphabetical order only. Looks like the debate as to whether or not Sportives are competitive or not is finally over!

Very bizarre indeed. Some sort of alphabetical non-competition. Why bother with timing then ? If not competitive then take the sport bit out of the sportive . Very strange.
What was the point of giving timing chips to everyone if not to have a clasification ?

If you're feeling technically minded, you can copy the data into an excel sheet and then sort by the elapsed time column. By doing that, I've worked out that I came 513th, but according to the split time was 565th at the end of stage 1. Not bad for my first attempt, and gives me a good target for next year...

I wonder if this has anything to do with British Cycling's recent interest and involvement in the sportive world? Perhaps we'll see the event entry fees reduced now that timing is no longer required?
  • FFS these things are non-competitive because otherwise they need to run under different rules which will rule out almost all of you.
I enjoyed it, it was hard, I feel as though I've done something.
If you've nothing positive to say about it, then don't go back.
I'd just like to say thanks to Lou and his team for organising the ride, it seemed pretty spot on (apart from running out of food at the 103 stop), I await all the moeners own rides next year.

To re-iterate, my gripe is not with Lou or his team, who must be commended for putting on another great event. Just that for those who want to see how they performed versus other riders it will not (easily) be possible. I aknowledge that not everybody wants or needs this feedback, but for those that do it is a disapointment and departure from last year.

    <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

    is that me then ?
not sure where/when this was, and dont recall any tatts!

the group dynamics were interesting, on the descent from rhigos i couldn't catch the guy ahead freewheeling until i got passed by a bunch i was able to tag on the back of and suddenly i could stay with them and caught the guy ahead, no one was pedalling. much fun.

spent quite a bit of time shamelessly hanging onto the back of groups.

mind you coming down & along from the last climb i felt like the bloody pied piper, every time i looked round i had another rider or two tagged on the back of my line..... and no bugger wanted to come through for a turn at the front.

oh well... no drafting at IM so i didn't whinge too heavily.

and for reference if anyone else was around at the time.... it was me what fell off at the intermediate timing mat [8)]

[:(] well it looks like i was 36th quickest rider in the 200k group.
with a 6h:25m , which is alright i suppose, considering my current form(cr@p). gearing was never going to be a problem with a 39x21, come to think of it ,i dont think i used the 21at all. top out with a 52mph max ,probably down into dyfynnog.
never done a sportive before, so nothing really to compare it against
regarding organisation and provided food, did`nt seem to bad to me.
lets face it ,it`s not really a long way and i did`nt eat anything anyway.
done tougher audax`s than that in the past ,so dont really see what all the fuss is about.[:D] and an audax only cost you a fiver to enter.

Lucky you ! As I haven't got a clue of excel spreadsheets I can't work it out, therefore I don't know if I have done any better than the last year - 120th out of 807 finishers. Could anybody help, please, starting number 745, official time 6:31:20. How many finishers ?
I am not moaning at all, didn't eat the degreaser and didn't stop at service stations, just want to know where I finished, that's all.
It's not a competition, of course, but if I could go any faster, believe me - I would.

Kosta... you are placed in 49th place out of 893 finishers
  • Read the site!! PROVISIONAL results today, final on Wednesday. You will notice that already in the cvourse of today the results are now split between 135k and 200k. By wed they will be sorted by time, look at last years results!!!

Separately, am slightly didsappointed to have been beaten by David Harmon (of Eurosport). sadly Kelly didnt appear to be riding...[:)]
I'm still not sure that skipping 2 feed stations and carting 2 kgs of water up the mountains was ultimately the right strategy, next year the camelbak is staying at home.

David, stop spoofing people, 6 months prep my aris!![:)]

thanks , that's relevant information. When my friends ask me how did I do, I can tell them - 49th out of 893 . This is something they can understand. Thanks again and well done for 16th :)
  • I have also just d/l's the results of the 200k, anyone want to know let me know name or number and I'll tell you. Comparison of split times of those who finished close to you are interesting - for me most were between 6 and 8 minutes behind at the split, and finished ahead! I was 205th at the split and 290th at the end. B*gger.

No worries Jim - I had a decent frame pump with me - wish I'd stopped to give you a hand. About 15 mins after passing you, the guy right in front of me fell off after going down a sunken manhole cover just after the feed at Glyneath(?).

After trying to introduce my front wheel to his rectum, I did my best Superman impression..........until I hit the deck - didn't feel too Super then. End result = broken collar bone. There goes the rest of my season. $hit.

I saw that... looked painful. And apologies to the guy who I almost knocked off as I swerved around you, then back in again to get over the mat. He was pretty p***ed off and let me know. I was surprised he didn't turn in with me to go over the timing mat. When I asked him why not, he didn't seem to think it was important. I guess he got one of the slower times in the 120K event.

Bad luck Bronzie. I know how you feel, having dislocated my shoulder a couple of years ago. I was able to get on the turbo trainer and keep fit in the meantime, but it was a bit frustrating
  • Bronzie that is so unlucky. Was that you then at the end with your arm in a sling shouting well done as I rode back to the car park? There was also someone sat on the side of the road between glyneath and neath with an ambulance nearby. He looked ok, but his bike was some distance away in the ditch...

I have done a number of the sportives in the UK - Fred Whitton, Etape Du Dales, Polka Dot Challenge, Wild Wales, Spud Riley to name a few.

The Dragon is my personal favourite. I think the organisation is excellent and the route is superb. Well done to Lou and his team

Hey well done everyone! Big respect has to go out to Adrian Lee who I think had the fastest recorded time of 5hrs 59mins for the 200k. My team mate Jason Pidd (mosquito bikes) came third with 6hrs 1min and 42 secs.

The Merckx Diaries with Slieve Maan's tasty 15% sections and 4km in length they'll be able to hear you breathing in Dublin City centre - believe me!

What a nightmare. I looked to see what time you did and saw dnf and wondered what happened and thought they must have got it wrong because you were riding well.

You will be back riding soon. I crashed at Hillingdon at the end of April and had a collapsed lung and broken ribs and major road rash but was soon back riding. Hope you heal up soon.
