  • Good stuff lads. I'll do a leaderboard soon, as soon as I've come up with a fair and highly scientific way of adjusting all the times for people who finished at the speed bump or island...it'll probably involve a +3 minute adjustment 8oP

I was doing the Hampshire Hilly Hundred (which was fantastic), so didn't get the chance to do BoxHill this weekend. Well done to again to those who attempted blasting it on the back of a long ride.

Did 7:30 to the cafe turning yesterday, 60k into the Sunday ride. Give or take a few seconds cos I was using my watch, preserving the rest of the ride stats on a very basic cycle computer. This was 80 kilos of bulk on a light fixed-gear bike (gearing 48/18 or 72 inches), to complete the stats.

It was about a minute faster than the first timed attempt on my geared audax bike, which is about 3 kilos heavier than the fixed.

I got a new PB yesterday, 6:53 to the island on my steel training bike, having ridden about 40 miles from Ealing via Staple Lane and Dunley Hill. It felt much better than the 7:15 I did a few months ago, when I felt like slightly sick for a few minutes afterwards.

I won't be able to have another crack at it for a while, as I've the three day Tour of Wessex and a 600km Audax to do in the next three weeks.

Hi Tikka, my steel training bike is a red Condor Fratello with mudguards, so it wasn't me. I live across the road from the Ealing Common, and head out to Box Hill via Richmond Park, Kingston, Esher, Cobham, Ockham, East Clandon and Ranmore Common:

Just over 8 minutes on Sunday! (c. 8:10 - Mental note to hit split button on the computer for next run). Felt terrible - Blew up twice on Ranmore Hill, but at least managed Box Hill without dabbing - Must have been the restorative ice-cream-stop on the top of Ranmore!
(Already taken in Leith Hill, Holmbury Hill, climb out of Peaslake).

Nice to see the plod out patrolling the route on Sunday, keeping the vehicle speeds down.
(Must have passed me half a dozen times on the loop back via Brockham).

Currie: I Bumped in to Naz from Kingston Wheelers.

Cheers Currie - Might take you guys up on that - As I was explaining to Naz though - I need to get my speed up first - Currently hiding under my "stealth bike" - Rack, guards and rack-pack, just to make it look like I'm really a tourist as opposed to a failed club cyclist [:D]

Just signed up to the KW forum - awaiting p/w.

Hope to get to a decent level of fitness eventually to join a club run.
Naz was out on his own - We both coincidentally routed off Boxhill via Brockham - wanted to find the route he took after the left turn at the Murco garage - Was it first right on the B road, or further down? I went right, then first left but it was more like an off-road course - fab ascent on the far side of the dual carriageway though. Managed a 50 mile loop. Hopefully try it again Monday whilst wifey is doing the Thames Turbo Tri in Hampton. (if I get a day off doing pit-crew duties) - just have to fight for the car, as I start my 50 from Shere.

if your climbing box in just over 8 mins your fitness isnt a problem for the club run. just get yourself down there sunday and i promise you wont regret it!

Come on - admit it - you just want to burn me off on a fixie [;)]
Cheers Currie - Thanks for the encouragement though - I'm keen to ensure I'm up there with a reasonable average at least though, before I venture out - Being constantly dropped was what put paid to my road cycling 20 years ago!

Done a 7:30 to the entrance to the car park opposite the cafe on the fixed (50/16 whatever that is in inches) with my 76kg of gut. Best I've ever managed on the geared bike is only 12 secs quicker.

I did 7:30 on the club run in February and three 8 min rides during the Ballbuster in March. Lost a bit of weight since then so I hope I'd be closer to 7:10. First time I ever went up (last year), a guy on a tri bike passed me like I was standing still and he had a full length kit bag on his back.

  • I might give this a go.. Coming from Battersea, I guess you head through Richmond Park to Kingston Gate then onto the A307 past the Scilly Isles until Esher. Then you'd turn left at the lights in Esher onto the A244 through Oxshott. Then I presume you go straight through Leatherhead town centre until a short blast on the A24 to Old London Road.

Something a little like this? http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1004149

Sound about right? I refuse to get on the train from Clapham Junction (3 mins walk) to Boxhill & Westhumble..!

A more scenic route with less traffic (and shorter) is to go through Surbiton/Hook/Horton Park/Epsom/Langley Vale/Headley to Box Hill. Our club website has a gmap of this in the club runs section, it's the way we usually get back from Box Hill.

This is my route from Clapham. I go down pebble hill and out and around but back up box hill. smack on 50 miles. but a pretty reasonable route for getting to box hill if you just want to go there.
