  • Blimey, 6.23 is a stonking time, well done that man. I'll be really impressed if anyone can top that this month. If I can get sub 7 this season, that'll do me and will be a time that I'll probably never top.

evening all.. did my first timing this evening and very pleased to say came in at 7.35. think i over cooked it on the first section was feeling it a bit 3/4 way up but manged not to blow up and sprinted from the last turn, well pleased with myself considering i wasn't even going to bother getting the bike out tonight... :) amazing what a bit of sun does!!

I've found that watching the speedo helps for pace. 15mph on the first straight which is more gradual until it steepens near the bend, dig in and try and maintain 13.5 for the 2nd and long 3rd straight, then the final gasping sprint on the ramp up to the cafe.

Then watch the picnickers stare at you as you choke on your own vomit! Someone get me a cold drink!!!

That's pretty much what I do too. However, is it just mean or do others find the first straight (before you ebdn around left) a little hard going? I know it's quite flat but there's something about the uneveness in the road surface compared to the rest of the hill.

I plan to ride out that way this afternoon from Horsham, via Coldharbour, and Ranmoore.
Whats the road route like after the climb? (Headley road) as I plan to ride back over Ranmore through to Abinger. Normally I just ride back down B.H.
  • Aint Skeered - go straight on at the top of Box Hill through the village. When you come to the T-junction turn left then turn next left (about a mile) and descend through Headley village. Then take the first left after the village and that'll bring you down Juniper Hill to the Mickleham - Dorking road. Turn left again and you'll pass the bottom of the Zig Zag and come out at the roundabout on the A24.

Juniper Hill is a great road - very quiet and scenic.

A 19 second improvement for me this morning. I'm not sure the additional suffering was worth the effort mind! [B)]
  • Did a 7.07 fri night., but on the geared bike. Found a touch a touch of Iggy Pop on the mp3 player probably knocked 5 seconds off my time. Fancy Marquee Moon by Television might account for a few more to get me sub 7.
Curiously as I was going down there was some lad who was going up looked pretty swift. All looked effortless and buttery smooth, body still legs pumping like pistons.
When I get going,Its all powerless effort, rocking around like a weeed up tramp on a friday night, snot running out my nose, gasping for breath, jumping out the saddle to try and get the ****ing bike moving, then sitting down again because my legs are screaming. Thrashing up and down the gears hoping something might work, arriving at the top soaked in sweat and mucus dribbling off my chin. Christ,If a vet saw me he'd shoot me on the spot.
I may not be quick but at least I look like I'm trying.

Sylvain and I did a 6.17 today on the way back from the Addiscombe CC clubrun.

After our club training ride, we didn't really up the pace untill near the first haipin,

I let Sylv lead all the way spinning a nice rythm[:I] and I gave it large at the top, I did manage to do it all in the big ring[:)]

    I'm 82Kg and Sylv is around 65Kg i'm guessing

We rekon we could do it sub 6 mins if we charged right from the bottom.

6.28 today. If I'd known the fastest was 6.23 I wouldn't have gone hell for leather up the previous 4 climbs :~) Carried on for another lap of the hills -- Leith, Coldharbour, Ranmore and then Box again. But much, much slower! 106 miles all up.

I will have to find a less lumpy route over next time.
Andyp, I tried your route through Headley but missed the turning, and came out on the A24 just before Leatherhead. Still gave me a few extra miles[;)]

Managed a 9.34 w/end before last, a big improvement but I had two things in favour. Slightly new set-up with new wheels for first time, but I suspect more important was following my friend up the hill. I wasn't near close enough to draft but keeping him in sight was motivation enough.

Did the limousin cyclosportif on saturday and I felt I was flying up some of the hills, particularly those longer than 2km and no steeper than 5-6%. I seemed to get a second wind. I may pop out on sat or sun to Box Hill with the sole intention of bombing up as fast as possible. All my previous attempts have been at end of 70km rides in prep for limousin (by the by, a very well organised local sportif with varying lengths suitable for all - highly recommended).

Seeing myself cast adrift at the bottom of the list is also significant motivation [V]

  • George, a sub 6 min requires average speed of around 24.5kph. anyone got a powertap thingy and any idea of power required for this given a certain rider/bike weight?

On the 8th day God made a bicycle, and he saw that it was good. (actually personally he thought it was his best invention yet)
  • Given george is 82kg, bike and rider say 89kg, 5% gradient, its about 380 watts to do 24.5kph: 79 kg bike and rider would be about 343 watts.

    I weigh 61.6kg & my bike is 6.8kg

My powertap gave the following :-

    303watts was 6:38
    334 watts was 6:23
  • Which would mean then that George would have to generate about 412 watts. maybe the gradients higher than 5%.

As a guide Stuart Dangerfield climbed Dithcling Beacon (10%) in the 1995 hill climb championships in 3mins 45secs @ a quoted 487W which is 14.88mph average. The course is 0.93miles long.
  • Boxhill is used as the 'prologue' in the ArmyCU/Dauphin cycles stage race held on August Bank Holiday weekend. The course is slightly different to what everyone is using here, in that it starts at the carpark just before the first hairpin, i.e. misses the first stretch from the main road, and finishes at the second National Trust car park at the top, i.e. after a few speed bumps. It's quoted as being 1.5miles and the winner last year did 4mins 36sec!!

I reckon from looking at my powertap file the start of the T junction of Zig Zag road to the car park before the first hairpin is 0.6-0.7 miles.

Everyone here is finishing at the top of the cafe, I don't think from memory the cafe to the 2nd car park at the top is 0.7 miles.

Might be wrong and maybe the Surrey League course is 1.5 miles long, also the section at the top just before and after the cafe is quite easy to pick up speed without getting out of the saddle where I personally hit a max of 21mph.

The times for 2005 & 2006 Box hill prologue for the winners were very similar a difference of 10 secs but the course mileage has a discrepancy, 2005 is 1.8 miles and 2006 1.5 miles making me think the distances aren't correct. Or I'm talking cack...Will measure it some day.

    Rob
  • The course should be marked with white lines at the side of the road - i'll probably ride there tomorrow so i'll have a look. It may even be the third car park at the top?

Was that Andy Bye? Once tried to keep up with him around RP on my way back from work. Did half a lap from Roehampton-Richmond-Kingston Gates. Couldn't really keep up and couldn't really speak when I rolled down to Kingston Gate from the roundabout. I was wheezing like an asthmatic hamster. He carried on round.

Any chance I can join in?? Rode the hill this morning for the first time in a year half way through a 80 mile training ride (live near Maidstone).

Anyway, find me on the list [:D] Not bad considering I started way too fast.

Today we rode the hilly 50k around the Surrey hills on the way back I managed to nudge my time down to 6.03
So I think it is still possible for a sub 6 min soon.

I went for it from the bottom mostly out the saddle all the way in the big ring.

Paul H also from Addiscombe rode it yesterday in 6.13 after the legs of steel ride! and he didn't even get going until the 1st hairpin.

Come on Who's gonna be the first to beat us?

As usual Addiscombe dominating the Podium.

Hmm, time to dust off my new "race blade" and put in an improved time!
( I did it on my lightweight Audaxer, however I run that with toeclips/straps, mudguard and carrier).
Am ashamed to say my second attempt was worse than 8:10.
