I'm keeping it simple: finish an event this year. Last season was just utter pony for me.

Start with a 'club 10'. You're bound to finish!

  • Guys, I started racing at the end of the season, having joined my club in August this year. Did an APR & then a 10TT (28:45). Any suggestions on what goals I should set for myself this year? I've entered a couple of Spotives, and will do a few TT's (10, 25 & 50), but would appreciate a "steer" from people who know what they're talking about![8)]

Not so good on the flat and much worse in the mountains, but here's my aims for 2007. Might be a bit ambitious, but now they're written down, I'll be obliged to at least try!!

    1) Ventoux in less that 2h15 (Jul)
    2) Joux Plane in less than 1h30 (May)
(took 1h52 last year, but was 44C)
    3) London Tri 40km in less than 1h10 (Aug)
    4) 3 Laps of Richmond Park in less than 60mins
(think I'm 70mins+ at the moment!!)
    5) Drop below 88kg (96kg at the moment)
    6) At least one 100km+ ride each month
    7) Over 6000km total for the whole year
    8) At least one 30kph+ avg on work commute
    (can never manage above 28kph)
    9) At least one 200km+ ride
    10) Get a place on 2008 Etape

If it wasn't for hangovers, I'd ride everyday.
  • Join a club.
Bealach Na Ba in a reasonable time.
Get down to about 75kg, and fit into my old suit.
    Compete in my first race/TT!

    Steve

  • My Goal is to Cycle around the east coast and maybe Lincolnshire exploring a little bit each weekend not racing just pleasure, hoping for daily mileage of 45 miles a day from March
  • La ventoux - Top 100
La Marmotte - Top 300 or less than 7h30m

Been trying for years to get below 1h20 up the Ventoux so who knows?

Now what have I done. If I disappear next October when evryone is reviewing their season you know why.[;)]

amcgill66 it comes down to how much time you have to train, get out with the club during winter and get some base miles.Speak to guys at the club to see when you should start the odd speed session etc getting under 25 for the 10 miler should be easy in your reach as for a 25 1hr 10 mins or even a 1hr 07 should be ok.Once you get it together you will very surprised how the times will come down.Good luck.ftt

  • I'd love to be able to do a 10 mile TT in 25 mins - I think then I could justify buying a a new, shiny and proper TT bike to myself.

Outside of that, throwing myself into as many races as my legs and A-levels'll let me!

You're going to be busy! I wish I had enough time to do all of that.

    Anyway, my aims:

    - Complete the 100km a month challenge
    - Do 3 or 4 sportives (ride of falling leaves, castle ride....)
    - Do L2B again
    - Do 4000 commuting miles
    - Become a father for the first time

    and most importantly

    - Buy a new bike! [:D][:D][:D]

Lose weight, build up core strength (early part of year).

    Complete:

    White Rose Classic (early June)
    Corrieyairack Challenge (MTB, late June)
Bike leg (relay) of Elbaman Ironman Tri (Sept)
Cope with a week in the Alps, including the Marmotton loop and doing AdH in under an hour (seems to be a common goal!) though anything under my current PB of 1 hr 14 would be nice! Oh, and start riding local 10 TTs.

Not much to aim for then!

  • Hi
I am new to this forum.....but have been a cyclist for many years and am just getting back into (having paid for 2 children to go through University).

My aim for 2007 is to complete the "Guide Dogs" charity ride in the Alps in August. 14 cols....38000 ft of climbing over 6 days.

I have a full time professional job so it will not be too easy prepare for this but I am determined to complete this challenge (the ride and to raise to sponsorship) before I get too old (currently am 54). I used to race but professional and family life have prevented too much involvement in recent years.

Part of my preparation might include participating in the local cycling club TT programme, a Sportive event or 2, a ride Portsmouth to Paris to watch the end of the TdF in July and back. Plus as much riding that i can do and maintain work nd famly life at the same time.

I would be interested to hear form others doing the same or similar personal challenges.

    Happy new year to all...........DaveK

    Event goals
    1. SPAM Winter Challenge - Survive DONE. Still alive. 172/383 in 3.26
Better than 2006 when finished 466/476!
PS SPAM 2008 further improved to 102/336
    2. Tour of Wessex - Gold
Hummm. Sort of done. Did not get official gold standard but results pretty good.
    Day 1 24 of 604 in 5:20
    Day 2 33 of 295 in 6:25 (on a single speed bike)
    Day 3 57 of 186 in 8:14
Overall 18 of 101 in 20:00 and second in age cat
    3. Dragon - Gold
Not done. Rode along with friend who wanted to go easy
    4. July sportive TBD - Gold
Done. Did the TOBM and got gold in 6.35.
    5. Raid Pyreneen - Do it (including ascent Tourmalet in <100 mins). Done.
    6. Improve 32 kph avs on local 75k 750m training loop. Not done.

    Training goals
    A. Follow a plan
    B. CP12 300W>320W DONE 340W on 8 Aug 10 mile TT
    C. CP30 274W>290W DONE 306W on 1 Aug Hillyish TT

In reply to AndyB question below "why these CPs?". As above my prefered events are sportives. 2006 was spent developing my aerobic capacity and recovery rates. For 2007 I want to develop my muscular endurance to be able to maintain a quicker pace up hills and be able to maintain speed when solo. These CPs will help me judge progress on this. (Another reason is that though I will track other CPs the testing itself is necessarily quite tough, so I will mainly do these two. I am expecting they will act as pretty good markers for the overall shape of my CPx graph.)

I'm intrigued as to why you are training these critical powers?

    http://www.teamvelosportif.co.uk
  • Being relatively new to cycling - about 6 months of consistent riding behind me now - and definitely new to "serious" cycling, what would be some good first season targets? Running used to be my main sport, and in running there are some "classic" goals such as a sub-40 minute 10K, 10 miles in 60 mins (that's tough!) and so on. I have no idea what the equivalents are for cycling, but looking at some of the goals on this thread, I know I'm way off! 10 miles in 21 minutes - I'm nowhere close. I've never ridden a TT, but 10 miles in 30 minutes would be working very hard I'm sure. 50 miles in under 2 hours? It takes me 3...

    My current cycling goals:
    * Ride my first 100K event (currently doing 40-50m on a regular basis)
    * Ride my first 100M event (entered for the Hampshire Hilly Hundred in May)
    * Join a cycling club and get fit enough to keep up on training runs

Can anyone suggest what would be good first time targets to aim for in 10, 25 and 50 TTs? Also, what are the 'classic' times that cyclists aspire to? Thanks...

You are on the right track by defining your goals. You would be surprised at how many people don't bother with this.
I would recommend three things that you can do:
    1. Definately join a cycling club. This will greatly increase the pace at which your riding skills and knowledge develop.
    2. Enter some cyclosportive challanges, these will help motivate your training. Furthermore, they can be used to add structure and purpose to your training. These can be UK events, you don't need to travel abroad.
    3. Gradually increase your distances so that 100km doesn't seem like a big deal.
As for specific TT targets it depends on your ability and level of fitness. If you join a club and do some club TTs you will get an idea of what you can do now. Then set your targets to improve on those e.g. if your first 10m TT is done at 30min then target 28min of 27min by the end of the season. Also remember when comparing yourself to other riders that tri-bars are worth about 1min in a 10m TT. You will find that mamy UK riders use special TT bikes, I wouldn't recommend buying one until you decide that you are serious about riding TTs. Ads for 'classic' times, I rekon under the hour for a 25 is one of those. But buy the sound of your posting you have a long ay to go before you need to start worrying about this sort of time.

Hope this helps. Good luck for 2007.

Hope I'm not too late but here goes, in no particular order

    Hit 57Kg
    Learn to use HRM effectively
    Do interval training
    Keep bike clean!
    Do 4000 commuting miles
Miss train out of commute altogether 15 times (makes return commute 70 miles)
    Do 5000 miles total
Do one 50 mile+ ride/month including at least 1>100 miles
On top of this do Norwich 100 and Suffolk coastal ride
Get myself some 10TT and 25TT times

Hmmm, seems a lot now its written down (to me at least!)

    PBP for me.

    Clean bike; Dirty mind!
  • At least one Audax ride of 200K and 300K plus more to make Randonneur 1000. This should include some DIY permanents.

PS. SR and PBP would be a nice dream, but realisticly, I don't have the time to train for that.

    Edited to add:
Do at least 1 100K ride per month.

I've currently (14th May) completed the 200K, 300K, 1st 5 months of 100K rides and only need another 200K of Audax rides to get the Randonneur 1000.

Do one sprint tri a month until June in prep for the standard distance Gullane in July.

The Edinburgh 10k Great Run in May as part of improving my running to the point where other people aren't walking faster than I'm running [:I].

Organise and run the Scotiish overnight coast to coast in June.

Include some Audax with a view to doing my super randonneur either by the very end of this year or sometime next.

Take Frood on a week's cycle camping [:D].

  • This will be my first full year of "serious" cycling so I don't want to be too ambitious at this stage.

    1. Complete Dragon Ride + at least two other sportives
    2. At least one metric century per month
    3. At least 6000km for the year
    4. Steady improvement in club 10's (haven't done one yet so can't be very specific)
    5. At least one 4/5 day cycle-camping tour
