So over 47% of social housing in London is filled by people born outside the uk.
That isn't an election winning stat which is the issue at hand here.

Why worry about what you believe "the left" thinks if it's not having any effect on policy? Or at least not to the level of voting for a far right populist in preference.
I wouldn't have May down as a leftie, even if Goodwin would.

It affects policy - we can all find exceptions to things. If the left is actually "tougher" on standing up to excessive wokeness maybe it should campaign on that ?
I'd suggest it doesn't because it isn't.

Or rather "47% of social housing in London has a head-of-household born outside of the UK" (not the same thing) is something worth questioning, but the point is that that is not what Goodwin claimed, and thereby he not only weakens his argument, but diminishes his authority as an academic.

Yeah but he is a very popular GB News pundit 😝

I wouldn't disagree - fair enough to pull him up if he got his stats wrong - I just don't think the real stats weaken his argument that much.
I do think he can be a little melodramatic and he probably does do that to sell his "product" but I still think he provides a perspective that goes some way to explaining populism which is why copy and pasted his piece for discussion.

I think he used to do that - reading the link of his paper from 2011. Now he actively seeks to justify and provide a respectable veneer for them.

Sorry, where have I argued that? I'm just pointing out that he's no longer an academic and makes demonstrably false claims. The things he writes are fiction.
Not sure what that has to do with Trump voters. It seems most of them are indeed smart enough to not believe Trump's promises; they just don't like inflation and voted out the incumbent.

Embarrassing that you actually think this is true. But apparently it's us who are in the echo chamber.

You cannot access social housing without citizenship or settled status. If a person has UK citizenship it's irrelevant where they were born: they are now British. If you check any local authority website they spell out the eligibility criteria.

It's because woke is a discursive construct with sufficient interpretive flexibility to allow anti-woke campaigners to apply them to any group or practice they wish to discredit, grouped together in order to generate a moral panic.

This would be a novel reason for changing foreign policy.

From what I read over the weekend, the top three reasons given by voters for not voting for Harris were:
1 - Decline in living standards due to inflation during her tenure as VP
2 - Insufficiently tough on illegal immigration
3 - Too much focus on "woke" issues, of which "trans rights" is but one. A subtlety is that it wasn't necessarily the woke issues per se that was the cause of discontent. It was the disproportionate focus on something other than issues 1 and 2 that was. e.g. one can argue until the cows come home as to whether males should be allowed to self-ID into female sport and changing rooms, but expending legislative effort on facilitating this won't sit well with those who are struggling to make ends meet.
A key point is that none of the above were particularly part of the Dems' election campaign. Unsurprisingly, many make up their mind based on the incumbent's performance.

I can't decide if I respect Biden for taking the approach of 'if you can't beat them, join them' in pardoning his son or if I'm disappointed he has sunk to the same level of bypassing justice.
1 -
In principle, I disagree with his action, but given the circumstances I think 'why not?'. The country has sent a clear message that they don't mind lawbreakers getting a free pass.

Understandable why he did it given what Trump did, and was likely to do, but disappointing.
Epic double standards shown by Trump complaining about it.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

biden's son was guilty as hell, but also he was pursued because he was biden's son, as a way to get at biden, evidence is that others guilty of the same were treated far more lenietly
trump pardoned his son in law's father, he's now nominated him as ambassador to france
unlike (joe) biden, trump is a convicted criminal, but his long experience of using intimidation, lawyers and money to evade justice means it's unlikely he'll ever face the consequences

Did Hunter invoke a LPoA to get this done?

The whole Presidential pardon thing is a disgrace, whoever does it. They've all done it. Clinton pardoned felons whose relatives subsequently made heavy donations to the Clinton Foundation and to his wife's Senate campaign.
Was Hunter singled out for more rigorous prosecution? Probably. But he and people connected to the rich and powerful seek advantage so must accept that they get extra scrutiny if they err.

The final House seat has just been called, and it's gone to a Democrat, so its 220 R, 215 D, one narrower than at present. It depends on whether the R group can stay united as to whether they can get Trumpian stuff through. But I suspect it could be messy.
0 -
Hmm, and I'd not realised this:
217R v 215D until special elections in 2025 in those vacated by people extracted by Trump for his admin. And at that stage those three seats will have everything thrown at them, by both sides. If Trump can't get stuff through the House, he'll be severely hampered, however much other carnage he can cause.

In other news, I think Nadler standing aside is good news... if Raskin gets the post, he's going to be much more of a thorn in the side of Trump (as long as Trump doesn't get him imprisoned for 'treason' first). Nadler's tut-tutted a lot and written 'concerned' letters, but hasn't gone much further than that. Raskin was the manager of one of Trump's impeachments (which then got voted down by the Republican Senate).

Bit fucking late now to decide to do whatever is available whether within accepted norms or not.

Have to say I admire Brian's optimism to put a positive spin on a lost cause. Echoes of the Brexit thread?

Bet his cat is in hiding during the countdown to UK joining CPTPP this month, making joining the EU customs union much more difficult.😂

Actually that reminded me of the catsitter bloke who used to be on here and was so rabidly pro-Remain that he got banned for being abusive to anyone who expressed a different opinion. Wonder if he's still sitting cats or whether they've all been kicked into low Earth orbit by now?

These are the people who are going to look out for all the poor people who voted Trump in. I'm sure of it. And all the black people too.
