So over 47% of social housing in London is filled by people born outside the uk.
That isn't an election winning stat which is the issue at hand here.

Why worry about what you believe "the left" thinks if it's not having any effect on policy? Or at least not to the level of voting for a far right populist in preference.
I wouldn't have May down as a leftie, even if Goodwin would.

It affects policy - we can all find exceptions to things. If the left is actually "tougher" on standing up to excessive wokeness maybe it should campaign on that ?
I'd suggest it doesn't because it isn't.

Or rather "47% of social housing in London has a head-of-household born outside of the UK" (not the same thing) is something worth questioning, but the point is that that is not what Goodwin claimed, and thereby he not only weakens his argument, but diminishes his authority as an academic.

Yeah but he is a very popular GB News pundit 😝

I wouldn't disagree - fair enough to pull him up if he got his stats wrong - I just don't think the real stats weaken his argument that much.
I do think he can be a little melodramatic and he probably does do that to sell his "product" but I still think he provides a perspective that goes some way to explaining populism which is why copy and pasted his piece for discussion.

I think he used to do that - reading the link of his paper from 2011. Now he actively seeks to justify and provide a respectable veneer for them.

Sorry, where have I argued that? I'm just pointing out that he's no longer an academic and makes demonstrably false claims. The things he writes are fiction.
Not sure what that has to do with Trump voters. It seems most of them are indeed smart enough to not believe Trump's promises; they just don't like inflation and voted out the incumbent.

Embarrassing that you actually think this is true. But apparently it's us who are in the echo chamber.

You cannot access social housing without citizenship or settled status. If a person has UK citizenship it's irrelevant where they were born: they are now British. If you check any local authority website they spell out the eligibility criteria.

It's because woke is a discursive construct with sufficient interpretive flexibility to allow anti-woke campaigners to apply them to any group or practice they wish to discredit, grouped together in order to generate a moral panic.

This would be a novel reason for changing foreign policy.

From what I read over the weekend, the top three reasons given by voters for not voting for Harris were:
1 - Decline in living standards due to inflation during her tenure as VP
2 - Insufficiently tough on illegal immigration
3 - Too much focus on "woke" issues, of which "trans rights" is but one. A subtlety is that it wasn't necessarily the woke issues per se that was the cause of discontent. It was the disproportionate focus on something other than issues 1 and 2 that was. e.g. one can argue until the cows come home as to whether males should be allowed to self-ID into female sport and changing rooms, but expending legislative effort on facilitating this won't sit well with those who are struggling to make ends meet.
A key point is that none of the above were particularly part of the Dems' election campaign. Unsurprisingly, many make up their mind based on the incumbent's performance.
