Good policy can have many benefits.
Including the boost to growth in the public school restoration sector

What are your thoughts on adding VAT to university fees?

I feel like you have just repeated my point l, so I will repeat it again. Fees will rise by less than 20% especially in the first year when there will be historic VAT recovery. This is supported by all the fee news coming out of schools.
Even the EU thinks that there shouldn't be VAT on education.

As I've said a few times, I don't have a strong feeling either way, but I think the argument that education is a good thing and therefore luxury education shouldn't be taxed is a weak one. The only real question is will it raise revenue or not.

If education is VATable, then I can't see much difference between private schools and universities especially business schools, but I'm missing that chip on my shoulder so it's hard to know about other possible chips that I might be missing.
I think scrapping grammar schools would make more sense for Labour.
Generally I support free education.

If it raises revenue it is likely to be pretty modest, so I'm not convinced that is the relevant question. If it's completely neutral, presumably that means a less well educated population all things equal.

How would it make a less well educated population?

If it breakseven it means there are more children in the state sector, but there is no more money per child, so no uplift in state education system. Meanwhile fewer children would receive the better private school education (I think this is an accepted benefit of them).

As I've mentioned previously, I think the fiscal gains will be marginal in pursuit of a ideological principle that risks losing political capital. Seems a slightly if thing to prioritise when there are bigger and more pressing matters to address.

Why is it a good policy?
Amd do you think it will raise much after accounting for the extra burden on state education?

Which goes to show that it is a politics of envy job by Labour, as if they were applying VAT as a point of principle on paid for education, then uni fees would be VATable also.

Let's wait to see

“Some users in the group also documented the steps they were having to take to pay for the increased fees. One said they had “cancelled RSPB and my national trust membership”, another said that they had dropped work on a kitchen and a third that they had “cancelled a new driveway”.”
Heart breaking 😫

That £12 per month National Trust membership will help massively

I do think people over estimate the political capital lost through this though. It's very easy to present an argument that private schools should be taxed more, at a time when "hard working families" probably feel like they're about as likely to travel to the moon as to find themselves in a position to send their children to fee paying schools and when state schools are falling down due to RAAC...
I think the details don't work so well though.

Am I reading this right that the Telegraph is saying that progressive taxation is "unfair"?
"But analysis by the Telegraph suggests the top 1pc of earners are paying more than twice their “fair” share of income tax.
Figures obtained by The Telegraph through a Freedom of Information request show the top 0.1pc of earners in the UK – those with pre-tax incomes above £889,000 – produced 5.9pc of all income generated, but paid 12.7pc of all income tax in the current tax year.
Furthermore, those in the 99.99th percentile – earning in excess of £4m – alone pay 5.6pc of all income tax, despite making just 2.6pc of all pre-tax earnings."

You don't sound very confident.

I read it as more of a counter to the usual leftiebollox about high earners not paying their 'fair share'.

Netflix will be next.

I agree that this is peak rightiebollox.

It's necessary given the number of deluded lefties who don't realise or appreciate how much high earners pay in tax.

Loads of those subscribe to the Telegraph I'm sure.

Thank goodness we've got the Telegraph to put us deluded lefties in our place.

Don't worry, the chip on your shoulder about the well off is clear enough.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Given the number of calls for 'the rich' to pay ever more tax, there do seem to be a lot of lefties who don't have the facts, or who don't want to pay heed to them.

Funny how all the outrage over additional costs was completely absent during the last ten years of well-above-inflation fee increases.
