Aren't you supposed to mention ketchup when you use this ad hominem?

I can do if you want...

Dunno if you noticed, but the freezing of tax bands meant that the poorer tax payers also pay more tax too. Must admit I can't remember you complaining about that.

Ketchup time! 😀

Nope, I was just commenting about the ketchup. But have a gold star for effort.

So explain how the 'chip on shoulder' (ketchup optional) comment isn't an ad hominem?

In this economy?

I couldnt be bothered to Google the term so ignored it. You're into smartarse territory now though.

Well I suppose you and Brian being less well off could club together and buy one?

Glad you've learnt something this morning. FWIW, being educated is quite helpful when one's an educator.

I think the argument on the left is often much more about whether wealth is taxed sufficiently (and indeed how it would be taxed) rather than salaried income.
I also think if you're going to complain about progressive taxes, you're better off looking at the issues around marginal rates that occur at considerably lower earnings.

It costs more to provide an education now, so what the state sector really needs is more kids to pay for. Is that your point? Otherwise, I'm struggling to see the relevance.

If I have understood correctly, "approaching 80%" is about 60%.
0 -
I suspect 80 is if you include student loan or some extra benefit cliff.

You'll be glad to know that the "approaching 80%" is in Scotland:
"You’ll see that if you are a recent graduate living in Scotland with three children under 18, between £100k and £125k you face a marginal rate of 78.5%"

Good to see that Scotland has it even worse!

He's remarkable. Such a short tweet and yet he still manages to be annoying?

No, my point is that the fuss about VAT is somewhat confected. If that many people who send their children to private school were really only just able to afford school fees, there would already have been a noticeable movement to the state sector due to the sharp increase in fees. There hasn't.

One thing this has taught me is that a leftiebollock and a rightiebollock together results in bollocks.

I'd be delighted if you could find me someone who is less annoying but equally accessible/interesting to a non-tax-nerd such as me. Surprising as it might seem, I don't quote his tweets to annoy you (even if I know it's almost guaranteed that they will).

It's a backfiring bit of virtue signalling. It will make almost no difference either way, is entirely a dog whistle for the left of the party, but is creating a lot of noise and distraction because it is so arbitrary.
On the flip side, people from Hampstead complaining that they will need to cut back on organic humus isn't exactly cutting through to most people.

Mostly agree. I don't see any strong reasons to tax school fees, but neither do I see any strong reasons for exemption for this professional fee over numerous others for which VAT is chargeable

I'd agree that the spikes in marginal rates at lower level of income are something that need sorting.
Wealth tax keeps coming up but looking around the globe it's not common for a reason. There are also taxes that indirectly target wealth, such IHT and CGT. What the left never seems to take into account is the behavioural changes of those affected by wealth taxes, particularly the more internationally mobile.

It's so much the complaints of those impacted by it as those who pull their kids out of private education and put them in the state sector, creating extra cost and strain on the system.
Agree it is a bit of red meat for the class warrior part of the Labour party. However as for virtue signalling, not sure that envy is a virtue.

I still haven't googled it though.
