I think that was 2004, when he won something ridiculous like 9 or 10 stages (will have to double check it).

EBH was another rider who was touted almost as Eddy Merckx like in terms of potential. Never really happened for him either. I remember a story at the U23 World's in 2007, EBH was the big favourite, apparently before the race he was overheard asking where the podium was for after the race. From memory, he was caught up in a crash. Never get ahead of yourself!

I started to get back into cycling in 2009 I think after a few years ignoring it, one of the first races I followed was that year's ToB where he absolutely dominated. I joined this forum around the same time and there were regular discussions about whether he could be a GC contender, it was certainly felt he'd win a few green jerseys.

Yes, he was definitely touted as a possible GC rider early career. Then he seemed to morph into a classics rider then sprinter. I always got the impression he never really found his niche. Supremely talented but never quite found where or how to channel that talent.

He never quite had the absolute top end speed, but he also suffered in longer races - couldn't get the gels down without stomach issues

Interesting, particularly the nutrition angle. I wonder if it would have been different for him today, with the amount of different products and changes in approach to nutrition, especially eating off the bike.

Oh I'm sure it would. It would at least have been picked up as an issue very early on - nowadays they train to be able to eat gels at that rate

he was out there 6 .05 yesterday. i know some of you like an Etape so how would that compare to what you've done? I remember in the TdF Cadel won they went up AdH and Cav did it in 55 mins after 19 stages of racing and he was towards the back.

Nice, but am a bit sad that the podium lends too much credence to the event. I'd much have preferred him to have closed down a hard charging Pozzovivo with Froome in 3rd.
