Do I come across as a fool? Of course that is their motivation, but it is a short term play.

Yeah sorry. I can reliably be expected to state the blindingly obvious on this forum. Nothing personal

When it comes to stating the obvious, you always come through.

There are lots of ways they would have had superfluous games. Second group stage, the random bollocks that is the Europa league, or a giant version of the European Championships, where no nation at all gets knocked out in the group stage.
The chosen format looks like a league, except every team does not play every other team, so it's not a league. In time, they hope it will look more like a league.

A league from which 75%* qualify to the next round.
*It's something like that.

It's true that the winner of the champions league could have finished 24th in the actual league.

Pearl and Dean will be handling the advertising for this phase of the competition.

. . . and never been a "champion" before that

What do you mean by jeopardy? Start putting booby traps around the pitch and release a wild tiger out onto the pitch at various intervals?
0 -
What example would you give of a mainstream sport with more jeopardy? . . . also football is not just the Premier League and Champions League.

Bring back the golden goal, that's what I say. In fact, that should be the rule after 70 minutes.
Four points for a win.
No substitutes.
One player leaves the pitch every 5 minutes until someone scores.
Bigger goals.

I don't think a top 5 team sending out their youth squad really means they care about the cariboo cup or whatever it's called now.
The US NFL season is very good. Only 17 games before you get to the knockouts. It's not so short that one trip up costs you the whole season but short enough that a bad 3 or 4 game streak and you're finished or at least, heavily compromised - you get *must win* games very early on in the season.
Though I would add they are moving to a system where more teams go through...

. . . and the draft system that they use means they don't have a "Man City" but at the same time doesn't really enable a "Luton" - the ringfenced nature of the league can also mean a load of games with absolutely nothing on them for supporters of one side or the other

Now that Rumbelows are in liquidation, I've got no idea why we still have a league cup.
But since we have it, I have no objection to teams putting out a team of youth or squad players.

Yeah I have mixed views on the draft system. I don't think the closed shop is necessarily any better - it is obvious the rich teams have a significantly higher floor than the poor teams, regardless of salary caps and drafts.
It's more there is so much football all the time, endless endless football, I find it very hard to get revved up for it.
I like in cycling that the race is once a year. Missed the move? Try next year.
I love the olympics for that reason. Every 4 years. What jeapordy. The terror, the horror, the jubilation. You can see how much it means and the pressure.
I love the knockout stages of the champions league for the same reason. FA cup I used to love when teams cared.
I love international football because it's knockout.

Again, this is sort of more acceptable if you are a follower of a Premier League team. If Premier League teams are going to do this, they should be in the mix right from the start rather than from the 3rd Round onwards.
On those wonderful occasions where a First, Second or national league side draw one of the mighty Premier League sides, the occasion is somewhat dampened by the bigger team fielding a team largely made up of players that their opponents have never heard of (although I did get to see a recently signed Ronaldo play for man Utd against my team Northampton Town which in retrospect was pretty good)

The draft system in US sports works fine, for US sports. To be viable here, fans would have to accept a status quo that is locked in. I seem to remember that the European super league idea didn't go down all that well.
A budget cap would be a better idea. UEFA sort of tried this with FFP. Setting aside the coach and horses that are currently running around through the middle of FFP, the basic concept is itself a mechanism of maintaining the status quo.

There are 3 different spellings of "jeopardy" on here so far . . .

I didn't check mine so you can ignore it.

That doesn't go far enough I reckon. Watch 'Rollerball' to get some more adventurous ideas.

I do think an exploding ball would help Man United speed up their passing game.

What about reducing gradually to 5 a side, untill either the players get cramp or someone scores?
0 -
Or having adjustable goal posts, so the target gets bigger until someone scores.
Arsene Winger just needs to be more imaginative.

Yeah I'd say be forced to take off 2 players every 5 minutes till at least one side has one player left 1 v 1 but no-one seems to like this.
0 -
Careful, that could hand games to Man U given how little possession they get against some clubs.

What about scrapping the offside rule?

The problem is that people think penalty shoot-outs are part of football. They don't remember that there was a time before them.
