Unlucky there SBA - 11 perfect penalties and then . . . it's so bloody "final" isn't it?Wilier Izoard XP0

I don’t watch a lot of football these days but actually sat and watched the Liverpool game tonight and this crop of youngsters they have look special.

Being of Mackem leanings I suffered the Alan Shearer derby on Tuesday night that had an absolute kicker of a punchline.
'Could this finally be their year' went the polemic.
Order restored with the 6th round draw.

Claiming that Financial Fair Play isn't fair might be one for the irony thread?

MC v PL on Monday. any bets on the outcome? I'd go for "nothing to see here, move along...".
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Relegation the the National League North seems like a suitable punishment if found guilty. That would be quite funny as I have a couple of City supporting mates.

Is it just me or is motd just really boring now? I feel like everyone is playing pep ball “trying to find the overlap” and it’s boring AF.
At least the utd game is usually good value as they’re this Jekyll and Hyde scenario - certainly not pep ball.
Where’s the agricultural team who kicks the shit out of the fancy pants teams on a terrible pitch or a route one or a genuine counter team?
Man it’s dull

Yup, pep ball is dull as fuck. Man City have scored the exact same goal about 200 times.
We need a rule change. Probably offside based on the players feet only or something along those lines. Something to tip the balance to teams that thrive on the transition.

It might change in the Premier League if Pep Ball ends up being practiced in the National League North.

Get a shot clock.

Or fouls are legal if there's been 30 seconds of fannying about.

Reducing the number of subs would help.

So it’s definitely not just me?
im very much a “styles make fights” guy and I feel like that is very much missing nowadays.

No, that would have fatigue injury down sides.
Linking team could counts to yellow cards would help. Part of pep ball is distributing the fouls needed to stop opponents hitting on the break across the team.
Reduces the risk of pressing higher up the pitch.

Football has only been played with five subs for a few years.

Yes Mr. Chomonley-Warner, but the modern footballing gentleman runs about 8 miles a match, whereas when the gentlefolk of the 2000s played, they ran more like 6 miles a match.

I remember it being one substitute. I'd go back to 2 - lasting 90 minutes then becomes part of the game.

Five subs came in during covid and stayed (2020). It allows players to run more and press more to the detriment of the game. Previously matches would open up as players got tired - a fundamental part of the game in my view.

It's an opinion.
Another opinion is that it would not make a significant difference. The premier league has the fastest pace, but fewest substitutions out of the main European leagues.

It's still lots more subs than it used to be at around 4 per side per game on average. That's a massive chunk of the outfield players given the goalkeeper and centre backs are unlikely to be subbed. Similarly, depending on the style, the full backs and holding midfielders are also less likely to be subbed.

It's not the direction the game will ever go, because of long term player fatigue issues. There has even been push back about added time. We also aren't going to have leather balls, puddles and mud in the area, goalkeepers playing with a broken arm, blah.
Besides, you are missing that the main reason for increased number of subs is time wasting. I couldn't find the stats, but I'd wager they would show a disproportionate increase in the number of subs in the 85th minute and beyond.

Ref should stop his stopwatch between the time the match stops and restarts, and indicate that's what he's doing. That might put a stop to the subs time wasting.

I disagree with most of this, but it's not an argument I can be bothered with.

Man City make the fewest substitutions.

You do in general seem more comfortable discussing things you know more about than the other people.
Feel free not to post on this voluntary participation thread. You have my permission.

That was the stat I thought was most interesting.

It completely supports your thesis.

Man City's squad is so deep they don't need to sub players in, they can just rotate half the squad entirely.
0 -
They would probably pass other teams to death even more if there were fewer substitutions allowed.
